Tbh it's actually the other way around. The shepherd is nervous -- panting can be a sign of anxiety in dogs. The golden (?) is max-relaxin'.

It's cute but I'm actually more concerned about the lack of restraints on these dogs in the car. They should have harnesses and seat belt tethers. Slam on the brakes or, God forbid, hit something and those dogs are going into the front / out the windshield.

58

u/PillowTalk420 4d ago

Panting can also mean excitement, and some dogs really love going for car rides.

15

u/Va-Va-Vooom 4d ago

that shepard is on his limit

26

u/tills1993 4d ago

The other signals here suggest that's not the case (ears back, sitting calmly)

11

u/ShesAMurderer 4d ago

They could have just got back in the car from the dog park or some other exercise

14

u/BrodyBuster 4d ago

GSDs are always nervous and anxious. Mine is on DEFCON 1 at all times. A blade of grass even touches the front porch and the neighborhood knows about.

Slam on the brakes or, God forbid, hit something and those dogs are going into the front / out the windshield.

I think this all the time about people who hold their dogs on their laps while they drive. I’m such an asshole that in the past I’ve actually told drivers doing that in a sweet voice, “Awww, isn’t that cute! Using your dog as an air bag!”

11

u/theshuttledriver 4d ago

is there data that shows dogs survive wrecks more when using doggie restraints? I have one at home, and I actually feel that it would break my dogs neck if we had an accident. If left unrestrained the dog becomes a projectile inside the vehicle.

Both situations might prove fatal to the dog, but maybe the dog restraint is more for the other passengers? than it actually is for the survivability of the dog.

This is a sad topic. Im not talking about it anymore. I love my goldie to pieces.

23

u/Hei-Ying 4d ago

Yes, there is actually. There are harnesses and crates that have been crash tested and approved by the CPS.

Sleepypod harnesses are the gold standard for large breeds.

26

u/Traditional-Plan7423 4d ago

Why would you attach it to a neck collar and not a harness....

12

u/tills1993 4d ago

Yeah obviously it depends on the harness. My partner and I did a lot of research on keeping your pet safe in a car and it was basically like "nothing will guarantee their safety" but generally they recommended what I've been saying in this post: harnesses and seat belt tethers.

2

u/katzeye007 4d ago

Sleepy pod harness and crash rated seat belt that goes over the head rest

15

u/spookyghostface 4d ago

Do you really need data specific for dogs when there's plenty for humans? Seatbelts keep you in the car and from smashing other passengers. Dogs wouldn't defy the laws of physics in this regard.

6

u/Eruptflail 4d ago

Idk why anyone down voted you for asking a legitimate question. Is there data about doggy restraints actually protecting dogs vs just protecting them from becoming projectiles in a car accident?

5

u/Arizonal0ve 4d ago

There’s data to find for sure and organizations that crash test various options. Only aluminium type crates or other materials that don’t break, crumple etc come out favorably in the data I read through. Seatbelt tethers are useless.

3

u/CashCow4u 4d ago

Looks like this needs study. This is all I could find.

3

u/Clairiscurly 4d ago

It's not just about the dogs. In an accident, an unrestrained dog that's thrown forward could badly injure or kill the driver and/or passenger.

3

u/Phoenix4235 4d ago

I researched it when I first got our car harnesses, and found that there is a lot of data - doggy version of the crash test dummy style info. It mostly depends on the type of restraint. Some of them attach to the collar at the neck; those were more dangerous than no restraint, and quite a few that a little research showed were made of subpar materials that wouldn’t hold up to a crash at all. But there were also some that were harness style that would clip to the seat belt. I don’t remember where any specific info was - it was years ago, but the bottom line was that being sure to look into getting the right one makes a huge difference in protecting both the dog and the other passengers versus not having one.

3

u/villan 4d ago

You shouldn’t be connecting it to their neck. Proper car harnesses spread the load of the impact over a much larger area of their body and definitely make it more likely that they will survive. If you’re attaching the restraint to their collar, you are (as you described) stopping them from being a projectile but doing nothing for their survivability.

The key word in your whole bit is "can be"

Why do you have to go straight down to the morbid reality of life? I wouldn't go near you with a skyscraper.

13

u/PossessionAshamed372 4d ago

To be honest my first thought was that German looks stressed and the lab is cuddling it to calm it down

2

u/Xenocyde702 4d ago

Panting doesn't equal stress or nervous. Look at the ears and overall demeanor. He isn't whining or looking around frantically. Reddit dog trainers eh? Barking must be aggressive all the time too, I guess.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/dimpletown 4d ago

Yeah, but they're probably right though

3

u/tills1993 4d ago

I say "can be" because I can never be 100% sure but, assuming the car isn't excessively hot, it's basically guaranteed that the dog is anxious.

7

u/Snotpotato 4d ago

Maybe they went on a walk? After walks my one dog immediately falls asleep and the other looks around panting to cool off for a while first. Maybe we don’t always have to assume the worst

1

u/Arizonal0ve 4d ago

I agree that I also am concerned about the lack of restraint on them but please know that a harness and seatbelt tether will absolutely do nothing in case of an accident. The tether will snap and the dogs will still become flying objects. I think I read somewhere to multiply dogs weight by 5 when crashing at just 35 mph.

4

u/katzeye007 4d ago

That is wholly incorrect. There are several brands that so the crash testing

0

u/Arizonal0ve 4d ago

In the crash tests I’ve reviewed those all failed so I’m definitely interested to learn which brand(s) pass crash tests?

1

u/TH3JAGUAR5HARK 4d ago

Both of these dogs appear to be living their best lives. I see zero stress on that shepherds face. Those are all good boy car ride vibes.

God I love Bubba so much

56

u/Honda_TypeR 4d ago

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich...

That….that's about it.

14

u/link090909 4d ago

I could go for a shrimp burger rn

4

u/SeonaidMacSaicais 4d ago

I bet the gsd enjoys that as much as the lab does

84

u/will7311 4d ago

Absolutley.Maybe even more?Is this even possible? LoL,I love dogs more then most people.

23

u/kitkatinkerbell 4d ago

Outside of my husband and close family, I definitely agree with this.

1

u/TrickAppa 4d ago

Absolutely.

0

u/culnaej 4d ago

Looks a bit slim for gsd, might be Belgian malinois

5

u/yaretii 4d ago

Working GSDs run slim, 70-80ibs. This looks like a mixed GSD though, his face doesn’t look mal at all.

0

u/busted_maracas 4d ago

That’s a Mal for sure :)

88

u/KittensNBoots 4d ago

Effing adorable

266

u/TarnMaster1985 4d ago

My two are like that. My GSD is my Malamutes rock. They are 12 now and everyday I fear not having them around much longer to laugh and smile about.

49

u/corehe 4d ago

It is sad to ponder about. I’ve never had a dog only cats and felt the same before my best friend and orange cat from when I was 4-21 years passed. I’d like to think that as much as a new pet can’t replace them u get to experience another great soul that can carry on their legacy. I just like to think of their big brother/sister they never got to meet but I tell them they would have loved you.

22

u/markender 4d ago

Humans are so fortunate to experience the lives of many pups if they're lucky enough.

7

u/corehe 4d ago

Indeed, animals can bring so much happiness.

9

u/CaptPolybius 4d ago

The love from a pet is worth the future heartbreak imo.

13

u/jaxxxtraw 4d ago

From multiple experiences, tell your self you'll cry after they're gone, file that shit away, and just love 'em up every day with a clear mind.

3

u/MyButtHurts999 4d ago

My guys are right around there. Yeah, it sucks to think about, but better to be mentally prepared.

I’m wondering how to handle it when one goes so the other isn’t forever waiting for his brother to come back…

I just made myself sad.

I feel so bad for my blue heeler, the one that I can tell makes him really uncomfortable is car rides. I usually take him places he enjoyed like daycare or to family, but he dreads the car ride he’s a good boy so he goes along with it, but I wish I knew how to help him

5

u/alex891011 4d ago

I’ve got a border collie that HAAATES the car. Drools endlessly, and throws up half the time.

We’ve tried everything possible to get her to enjoy the car but I think some breeds are just predisposed to being afraid of the car

2

u/tagen 4d ago

seems like it

my poor boy just faces away from the windows, head straight down, like he’s afraid to look outside and see the world moving. No amount of petting makes him feel better

he may get carsick, and that’s why he acts that way, but he’s never thrown up so idk

2

u/Carmen- 4d ago

My heeler as well! Very excited to get into the car, but then a complete nervous wreck during the entire drive.

24

u/morels4ever 4d ago

They’ve seen her driving, so yeah.

16

u/I_am_up_to_something 4d ago

Plus they don't seem to be strapped in.

10

u/40percentdailysodium 4d ago

Seriously. Why don't people strap their dogs in? That's a projectile when you get into an accident. I had a relative lose a dog through the windshield that way decades ago.

12

u/DV-dv 4d ago

Not to be that guy but your pets need to be fastened in with a seatbelt and harness for their own safety. If you make an abrupt stop that could be them falling over and hurting themselves, if you crash they could die.

9

u/Shmooperdoodle 4d ago

Oh my god. This is the most precious thing I’ve ever seen.

7

u/Ballzovsteel 4d ago

This is the support I’m looking for.

7

u/Frosenborg 4d ago

Hold me closer Tony Danza

73

u/SuddenOutset 4d ago

You really need to secure your pets in the car or they will die in an accident. Even if they don’t, you could easily lose them since they are not wearing collars.

25

u/ampmz 4d ago

Don’t forget about them becoming a projectile to kill you too!

4

u/Sumpm 4d ago

They're potential projectiles, and she's driving while recording them. All she'd have to do is rear-end another vehicle and it's all over.

38

u/tills1993 4d ago

Do not collar your dog in the car. Harness them. A collar will either break or break your dog's neck.

15

u/funkyfreightcar 4d ago

I think they meant to be able to ID the dog rather than tie em down with it

19

u/SuddenOutset 4d ago

Ya I’m not referring to somehow tying your dogs collar to a seat belt. Not sure how that came into your brain.

→ More replies (8)

28

u/GuiltyEmu7 4d ago

I wish more people would use a safety harness with dogs in vehicles. We buckle kids, there’s a reason. My dog has become so used to being harnessed and locked it he chills out and just stays mellow for the whole ride. So much safer for the dog and people in the car.

7

u/SuddenOutset 4d ago

Yup. No clue why it’s not a law. You typically can’t carry any unsecured load.

Can you imagine if you get into a moderate accident and while you’re okay, your dog is laying dead inside the car or potentially through the windshield on the pavement dead?

I don’t want to experience that. I doubt anyone does. That’s why we should all be securing our pets safely.

7

u/Oldsalty420 4d ago

I mean it’s also very unsafe to everyone else in the vehicle, good way to get teeth embedded in your skull

24

u/I_am_up_to_something 4d ago

bUt mY DoG LoVeS RoAmInG FrEeLy iN ThE CaR!

It's all fun and cuteness until something happens. Cute dogs aren't as cute when they're injured or dead. And the risk of that happening is even higher than normal since it seems like the driver is focussing on filming the dogs instead of on driving :)

5

u/eye_booger 4d ago

Don’t even get me started on the people who insist their dog can and should sit on their laps while they drive. Do they realize what’s gonna happen when that airbag goes off?

7

u/JakeHodgson 4d ago

I think everyone would be for it if they knew. But I think a lot of people just don't know. Through no fault of their own.

It only really became a popular thing like 5 years ago. If you didn't have a dog before that and you only just got a dog. You wouldn't have any reason to necessarily know.

If you go through like with an idea of what a dog in a car is. You have no reason to challenge that.

2

u/shapookya 4d ago

If people are so brain dead stupid that they can’t come to the conclusion that a dog too should be secured in a vehicle, then I’d argue against the “through no fault of their own” part.

→ More replies (1)

-1

u/ma11en69er 4d ago

This is a nonsense take, everyone knows the danger of loose children or objects in a moving car, pets are no different.

11

u/JakeHodgson 4d ago

this is nonsense. I know it, so other people must know it too!

5

u/baldbarretto 4d ago

Is a dog somehow so different to an unsecured child that other people could not have independently arrived at this before now? Both lack impulse control and can distract drivers, both can become projectiles in crashes (harming themselves and other passengers), both are beloved family members …. It’s not esoteric knowledge

2

u/JakeHodgson 4d ago

Yes. Because until like 5-10 years ago. Dogs were never* restrained in cars. While children have.

*obviously I'm sure there's people who did something similar before the.

It is esoteric knowledge since not everyone has always owned a dog and therefore they don't know they need to restrain their dog. If they hadn't seen people do it previously. They wouldn't really have any reason to think otherwise.

This is literally how it goes:

They've seen dogs in cars.

They haven't seen dogs restrained in cars.

A human seatbelt probably wouldn't work on a dog.

Logic would follow that they don't really have to do anything once the dog is in the car.

2

u/ShirosMissingArm 4d ago

So you're saying people can't extrapolate from us wearing seat belts and strapping kids in car seats why their animal that could easily weigh more than a kid should also be secured?

If that's the case it should be much harder to get a driver's license.

2

u/greenie4242 4d ago

Do you strap down every single object heavier than a few kilos before you drive? Do you have a harness for your laptop so it doesn't become a projectile in a crash? Does your heavy backpack get tied up and restrained before every five minute drive? Do you strap down all your heavy groceries before every drive back from the supermarket?

I'm just asking if you do all those things, as you seem to believe everybody else should have automatically come to the conclusion that not doing so would be unsafe.

I was taught during an advanced driver training course that everything in the car can become a projectile during a crash, yet I've never seen anybody strap down groceries such as jam jars, milk bottles, juice bottles, small appliances etc.

2

u/ShirosMissingArm 4d ago

Um yeah I do. Not with straps but with placement. Groceries go in the trunk so they're not projectiles. My laptop goes in my backpack and either pushed forward in the passenger footwell or behind my seat on the floor.

Neither of those would be acceptable for a dog because it's a living thing and needs a harness.

Maybe you'll roll your eyes, but 25+ years of driving and none of my shit has ever been a projectile in a crash.

2

u/greenie4242 1d ago

Good on you, I try to do the same. Groceries go in the trunk behind the seats. Anything that won't fit goes on the back seat with a cargo cover over it.

Things like umbrellas and walking sticks go sideways behind the seat so they won't impale anybody.

I have plastic boxes with locking lids for all my camping gear so it's easy to organise and won't go flying around the car in case of a crash.

Most people don't do anything similar. I was told by my driving instructor that he knew somebody who was killed when their college textbook hit them in the back of the next during a crash. It was sitting on the rear parcel tray. Scary,

I don't know why the other person replying to you is being so dramatic. But whatever.

Yeh. Why would you? You don't go round questioning literally every action you take day to day. You act on the knowledge you already have and go from there.

If you haven't necessarily seen someone restrain a dog in a car. But you have seen dogs in cars. There's no reason to really think you should start doing it.

0

u/ShirosMissingArm 4d ago edited 4d ago

If it's something that can affect the safety of myself or people/pets I care about, yeah I do. But I suppose Darwin awards have to go to someone.

Edit: You're essentially the person who says "my parents always used to let us ride around in the back of the station wagon unrestrained and nothing bad happened so it must be totally safe." You just prove my point that licenses should be harder to get.

0

u/JakeHodgson 4d ago

Yeh dummy. If you're just not going to read what I type. I'm not really sure why you bother replying.

Your edit is just pure brain rot. It's almost literally the opposite of what I'm saying 💀

I mean you could use your brain and just think about it rather than operate on auto pilot.

“Boss said shoot the dogs so that’s what I’m doing”

“Just following orders”

If you have an unsecured dog and you do stop abruptly for a non accident reason, your dog will likely be startled and fall over. That incident should hopefully make some lightbulbs go off in your head.

u/JakeHodgson 4d ago

Yeh. Glad we're in agreement :)

When my pup was little, she had a lot of energy, was kinda wild and would want to play a lot with my in laws' dog, who was 10 years older and wanted to be left alone. So my in laws' dog, kept my dog at a distance making it clear he didn't want her to come too near him.

During new year's eve, there are a lot of fireworks where we live, it's very loud and my in laws' dog is very afraid. Like really bad, hiding and shaking and not going out. Our pup, not at all.

We left her at my in laws' one new year's, and suddenly their dog allowed her near him, and she calmed him, he was more relaxed and not so afraid anymore. It was so nice to see.

I love this. Some of my favorite pictures of my dogs are of them snuggled up in the back seat.

So, are there 3 rows of seats and you're in the middle row, are you in a country that has the driver on the right and you're a passenger up front, or are you recording while driving?

🎶You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me

When the road looks rough ahead

And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed

You just remember what your old pal said

Boy, you've got a friend in me

Yeah, you've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me

You've got troubles, and I've got 'em, too

There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you

We stick together and we see it through

'Cause you've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me

Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am

Bigger and stronger too, maybe

But none of them will ever love you the way I do

It's me and you, boy

And as the years go by

Our friendship will never die

You're gonna see, it's our destiny

You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me🎵

My dumbass dog has been going for rides for 5 years now and he still hasn't managed to balance himself. The dog just flops around everywhere like I'm slamming the gas n brake n cutting the wheel like it's an F1 car. I drive like I'm trying not to crush an egg on the pedals.

This app is starting to become annoying. People can’t just see a very sweet clip and just aww, you got the animal/car police stating things that are unnecessary. How miserable must you be to feel the need to complain about such a lovely moment shared.

Yeah, fuck safety concerns as long as you are getting your moment of internet joy.
