Indeed, while Mississippi may rank below all other U.S. states in many measures, and near the bottom in several others, by raw GDP per capita, at $28,944, it ranks above Saudi Arabia's $24,454, and is more than double that of Russia ($12,926).
This person should write all of Mississippi's advertisements
It really does speak to how well the US' worst are even in a developed world context. Ignore third world mud huts. Like even among Europe Mississippi is... fine. Mississippi is a top 50 country. Think about that.
Raw GDP per capita is a poor indicator for what we're talking about. Mississippi's life expectancy is about the same as Moldova (the Mississippi of Europe). Bosnia has a lower infant mortality rate. Middle of the road EU countries like Portugal, Greece, etc, are a lot better off in general than Mississippi (and other impoverished areas of the United States e.g. Indian reservations, large swaths of rural areas, inner city ghettos, etc.)
If I'm comparing Mississippi, it's not to entire countries but regions, since it isn't an entire country either. And yeah, it's about on par with more than a few regions of the nicer countries in Europe too. Sometimes better, depending on where you look.
