To me it’s so bad it’s good. spoilers i mean what’s not to believe about high schoolers being presidents of middle aged motorcycle gangs, or running their own bar, or busting their own father as a serial killer, or owning a gym for underprivileged kids after being subjected to a juvenile underground fighting to the death ring, or overtaking their moms brothel, or their mom being undercover in a suicide cult ran by Chad Michael Murray? I mean, sorry but that is quality shit in my book.

Man, you're kinda selling me on Riverdale.

u/YEGKerrbear 27d ago

They didn’t even mention the levitating babies, Archie fighting a bear and winning, or that the cult is also harvesting organs via hypnosis.

u/soayherder 27d ago

This sounds like it out-Twin Peaks Twin Peaks.

63

u/CopperAndCutGrass 27d ago

It's literally Twin Peaks 90210. The references are not subtle.

21

u/soayherder 27d ago

I just told my husband what people have been saying about it, and he had a question.

Good god. Did they lace the writing room cocaine with acid? Or were they all writing on speedballs?

10

u/scarlett3409 27d ago

Knowing at least one ex writer on the show I would say you’re not far off. Maybe not in the writers room but not far from it haha.

6

u/RickyShade 27d ago

Current writers just had Jughead take shrooms to try to get over his writer's block, so, yeah.

3

u/Fudge89 27d ago

Mädchen Amick is in the main cast so it’s hard not to make that association regardless of how unsubtle it is haha

1

u/SwissMiss90 27d ago

Funnily enough, Mädchen Amick ( Shelly the waitress from Twin Peaks) plays Betty Coopers mom in Riverdale.

2

u/soayherder 27d ago

So I've never seen Riverdale but in my head canon now Riverdale is a sister city to Twin Peaks.

12

u/Flaneurer 27d ago

Alright you sexy beast I'm in. How do I start ugh? Is there a streamingng service ore do I just place it under my tongue?

8

u/misspelledameoba 27d ago

Wow, the marketing for this show was way off based because I am fucking sold.

5

u/AlisaLolita 27d ago

...Yeah, I'm going to try watching this again, lol.

2

u/WilliamMcCarty 26d ago

Archie fighting a bear and winning

Dude, you're not selling it even as best you could: Archie didn't really win, the bear killed him...and he fucking well came back to life.

The best part? It was never mentioned again.

1

u/YEGKerrbear 26d ago

Hahaha you’re right, honestly I barely remember it because SO MUCH has happened since then

It is referenced one more time, when the core four have to survive an obstacle course of horrors created by Cheryl’s mom that includes Archie fighting a man in a bear costume 😂

1

u/The_Chaos_Pope 27d ago

What do you even do with bear organs?

Riverdale is a phenomenal show after the first couple seasons. It's like watching WWE. You don't watch it because it's believable, you watch it because it's so hilariously absurd and the writers know it.

3

u/Humble_but_Hostile 27d ago

Exactly. I think its supposed to be "over the top" I mean it takes place in the "Archie" comics universe lol

My fiancé loves the show

2

u/BrackaBrack 27d ago

Ah so Nip Tuck without the operations.... anyone remember Nip Tuck?!

0

u/Spoiledkid1 27d ago

WWE is nothing like Riverdale

17

u/houseat261turnerlane 27d ago

WATCH IT! I write for a living and my dream job is Riverdale because it's like they get together in the writer's room and go "okay, for fun, what's the craziest fucking shit we could do?" And everyone shouts shit out and they go "haha! got ya! Go with that for this season."

4

u/DrawnIntoDreams 27d ago

It's like that key and Peele gremlins 2 skit.

39

u/abe_the_babe_ 27d ago

If you watch it with the idea that it's supposed to be stupid and crazy then it's really fun

9

u/iheartcookin 27d ago

The first season is dumb fun. So over the top with lots of Twin Peaks influence.

5

u/urbanlulu 27d ago

watch it, it's soooo horribly bad it's good

18

u/s_matthew 27d ago

I particularly loved when a local band would perform a song that heavily featured an instrument - usually keyboards - that wasn’t represented in the band.

16

u/Dr_mombie 27d ago

Clearly, I have been missing out. As a fellow conisseour of garbage tv, might I suggest centaur world? The story line is pretty straight forward. Horse falls through wormhole and is trying to get back to Rider to complete the battle of good vs evil. The world creation and characters are fucking weird. I made my kids watch it and even they were like "Dafuq are we watching mom?" That's saying a lot coming from kids who enjoy the fucked up world of Coraline.

5

u/NTaya 27d ago

I watch tons of animation, and I felt Centaurworld is more "simply bad" than "so bad it's good." Animation is weird and awesome, characters are living shitposts, but it doesn't mesh well with the somewhat serious storyline they go for. It's especially noticeable when some "deep" "emotional" song hits.

13

u/YellowHammerDown 27d ago

their mom being undercover in a suicide cult ran by Chad Michael Murray?

Hol up

11

u/cramburie 27d ago

That's the big thing detractors are missing: us fans know it's fucking garbage and we like that it's fucking garbage.

36

u/CptNavarre 27d ago

in a suicide cult ran by Chad Michael Murray?

omg tell me you're not serious wtf

38

u/JessiR91 27d ago

Yeah then he tried building a rocket to fly off into space. Riverdale is mad.

16

u/stickdudeseven 27d ago

This sounds like televised fanfiction.

23

u/JessiR91 27d ago

We highly suspect the writers are on some jingle jangle (fictional drug they came up with)

11

u/Sabinlerose 27d ago

That's the perfect way to describe why I love the show.
It's high production value fanfiction.

10

u/pdschatz 27d ago

CMM wearing an Evel Knievel style jumpsuit standing next to his 'escape rocket' with a gigantic American flag next to him in the shot made me laugh so hard. The show should've just ended with that scene, it will never top that...

2

u/scarlett3409 27d ago

To make up for it they decided to just time jump like 5 years into the future hahah

2

u/thxitsthedepression 27d ago

And then gets shot by Betty’s mom.

15

u/CptNonsense 27d ago

200% serious. That's how hard Riverdale commits to this dumbass shit.

1

u/SwissMiss90 27d ago

Gosh I was just throwing out a few random plot lines. That is literally the tantalizing tip of the iceberg. Im so tempted to tell you more but I really don’t want to spoil anything in case you actually watch it. It is literally just that crazy from episode to episode, season to season. Tres entertaining.

1

u/CptNavarre 26d ago

I will definitely never be watching it. Chad Michael Murray.my God are we in 2004?

10

u/DrOctopusMD 27d ago

Wow, that's insane. So then what happened in episode 2?

19

u/CptNonsense 27d ago

No joke, the first episode is Archie getting caught sleeping with his music teacher. Who is later murdered by a pulp comics serial killer who kills people for sinning. And is also Betty's dad.

7

u/YEGKerrbear 27d ago

Definitely so bad it’s good. Any time you think they’re going to go right, they go left. And the situations just escalate in the most ridiculous ways possible. There’s also at least one moment or line of dialogue that is not meant to be funny that makes me burst out laughing per episode. It’s just wild

9

u/cgo_12345 27d ago

Riverdale is the Gotham of Archie.

7

u/TryingT0Wr1t3 27d ago

Yo, I am with you. I had a lot of fun watching!

6

u/[deleted] 27d ago

Right?? Everyone is in the thread saying it's terrible/over the top/not realistic and I'm like this is exactly why it's great.

16

u/quanjon 27d ago

It's not bad, the show is very well produced and the makeup, costumes, camera work, etc. is all great quality. It's just sooo ridiculous and halfway through the 3rd season my girlfriend and I realized we had absolutely no clue what was going on anymore. It turned into such a mess to follow who is who and half the people are evil but actually secretly good but also evil, and so many people die all the time!! Like a dozen high schoolers have been killed in a few years, it's bonkers. I can't imagine what writing for the show is like and the web of connections and plot holes they need to follow.

6

u/RusticGroundSloth 27d ago

What the actual fuck? Is THAT what’s going on in this show? I devoured Archie comics when I was a kid and…damn they really aged it up lol.

5

u/farmtownsuit 27d ago

You just perfectly explained why I can't help but watch Riverdale. Except you left out one critical bit: Lili Reinhart

4

u/Department-Amazing 27d ago

I think there’s a lot of moms that would join a CMM cult

4

u/ramenslurper- 27d ago

I love Riverdale for this reason.

I love that I can put it on as a background show and could look up to a Godzilla situation suddenly happening and be not only not surprised but have no need to go back and see how.

There is no how. There’s just bears trying to eat Archie, fantasy murderers and Veronica being a booze mogul at 17.

13

u/CptNonsense 27d ago

Thank you. Riverdale is completely insane schlock. It's not just gritty teenage drama bullshit, it's absolutely bonkers gritty teenage drama bullshit.

3

u/squid-squid 27d ago

thank you for making me laugh

3

u/Wrencer4Endgame 27d ago

I stopped after season 2. Didn't know shit got so extreme after that lmao

3

u/superdooperdutch 27d ago

Well when you put it like that...

3

u/dantanama 27d ago

Yeah, I feel like most people here are kind of missing the point of the show. That being said it did go a bit off the rails, even for the concept.

3

u/knight_ofdoriath 27d ago

a suicide cult ran by Chad Michael Murray?

How are you going to say that and not mention that he tried to escape on a rocket?! That's the best part.

1

u/SwissMiss90 27d ago

I was trying to leave a little something to the apparently unimaginable imagination.

2

u/fnord_happy 27d ago

Wut. Isn't it based on the comics?

3

u/namewithak 27d ago

I think it's more based on the Road to Riverdale graphic novels than the old comics. Road to Riverdale is apparently a darker take on the old slapstick Archie. The art really reflects that too (from what I can see on google anyway).

2

u/DraftyPenguin 27d ago

I’ve never sent the show, but now I’m applauding their commitment. That’s some crazy ass TV right there.

2

u/Alledag 27d ago

Exactly.

2

u/cat-meg 27d ago

This is sounding a lot like an anime.

2

u/eedwards89 27d ago

Don’t forget there’s aliens now too!

2

u/danonjj 27d ago

as someone who grew up on archie comics and watched only season 1, you are blowing my mind on how wild this show is.

2

u/Flashman420 27d ago

I fell off during the suicide cult/haunted game of DnD season. I really gotta get back to it.

2

u/jadbronson 27d ago

It sounds about as well written as a porno from the 80s

2

u/Itslikethisnow 27d ago

Apparently people are expecting a CW teen-soap-opera about a high school to be realistic...?

2

u/thxitsthedepression 27d ago

EXACTLY! This is what I always say when the show comes up and I admit to watching it, that it’s so bad it’s good! The absurdity and ridiculousness of it all is the whole point of it!

2

u/PlanarVet 27d ago

Like, actual shit. But quality never the less.

2

u/brandee95 27d ago

I kinda want to watch Riverdale now...

2

u/biggslappy 27d ago

Then finding out she has the “serial killer genes”, but neither parent, not even her actual-serial-killer father, has them

1

u/everyplanetwereach 24d ago

See, I read this and think "that's great", I definitely need to watch this
