It was supposed to be older more gritty archie characters, but I thought that would be in REALISTIC ways, more like glee with teen pregnancy, drug problems, assault, etc, not murderers and floating babies.
I hadn't watched it, but my wife turned it on when I was falling asleep. I asked her how it was, what happened, and she told me Archie had sex with Ms. Grundy. Having only read the comics, that's a mental image I could have done without.
I remember watching some documentary length video on YouTube that pretty much broke down the situation.
Apparently one of the executive producers is absolutely obsessed with Archie comics (according to himself in various interviews), having made a play called "Archie's weird fantasy" in which Archie came out as gay while dating(?)/living with real-life murderer Nathan Leopold and facing the hardships of adult life. I think it also said that Archie moved from Metropolis (like, Superman's Metropolis) or something?. Anyway, the theater got a C&D from Archie Comics because they claimed that making Archie gay would harm their image (yikes).
The man himself even says that without that play, Riverdale as a show wouldn't exist.
EDIT: Found the video, I now realize it's more of an exploration of why Riverdale sucks in general.
