What is 100x harder than it sounds?

Win a arguement with a stupid person.

110

u/msantamaria86- 22d ago

He said harder, not plain impossible. As long as they keep saying "it's my opinion" you have no chance at all

35

u/dyckfayce 22d ago

Ooooo this one gets me too. Those who say that anything and everything is simply an opinion and can't be wrong. There is a big difference between "I don't like the color blue" and "no one should use blue anymore".

7

u/ImNotAGiraffe 22d ago

I mean, those are still both opinions though.

19

u/dyckfayce 22d ago

I disagree. One is a reflection of one's own experience, e.g. I don't like blue. The moment it is pushed beyond the observers experience it becomes an argument or an assertion, e.g. Everyone elso should not like blue.

Not everything is an opinion. <- also not an opinion

9

u/FSMFan_2pt0 22d ago

Dale Carnegie summed it most efficiently: "You can't win an argument". The idea being that when you're arguing with someone, stupid, smart, or somewhere in between, human nature causes us to dig in and refuse to give ground, no ... matter... what.

When high emotions kick in, logic tends to leave. Even so, though you'll never win an argument on the spot, you can plant seeds of thought in that person's head. Over time, they might take root and change the person's thinking.

No joke I knew someone who'd argue to the death about any stupid opinion they had and any time they'd get backed into a corner they'd just spout: "well that's my opinion and opinions can't be wrong." The following is the conversation we had about it oine day.

Me: "It's my opinion that the sky is purple. Would you say my opinion is correct?"

Them: "How do I know we perceive colours the same way?"

Me: When you were a child, did you instinctively know that colour (gestures broadly at the sky) was called blue or did you need to be taught all your colours?"

Them: "I was taught."

Me: "Me too. Knowing that... It is my opinion that the sky is purple. Is this opinion correct or incorrect?"

Them: "Somebody could have taught you that."

Me: "They didn't. They taught me that colour is blue. I know it is blue, but my opinion is that the sky is not blue. The sky is purple. Is that opinion correct? Yes or no?"

Them: "This is stupid."

Then they just walked back inside and I was left frustrated and baffled at the sheer force of will poured into maintaining as level of deliberate ignorance that deep.

I'm a firm believer that often people who argue stupid or ignorant points know full well just how stupid and ignorant they are being, but are simply incapable or unwilling to admit they they are misinformed, totally uninformed or unwilling to learn and would rather die on whatever stupid hill they've chosen than admit their faults and grow.

17

2

u/X_Rbeast 22d ago

Nah it was other substances I took that were harmless. I took them a while ago and now I have more control over my brain and body. It's pretty amazing. I can relax my body and mind whenever I'm sitting still or laying down

3

u/i_hate_people_too 22d ago

What I did was take acid a few weeks ago and focus on controlling myself (meditation as well) to become better overall and it worked. I don't need to take anything to go to sleep now and can always notice when I'm dozing off aswell. the sleep part is only part of what I gained

Maybe a teeny tiny spoon, no way could I do a tablespoon. I'd probably die.

10

u/1ogicalfallacy 22d ago

The trick is to not try and swallow immediately, let it sit in your mouth while actively trying to make more saliva. After a while you should be able to swallow without issue

4

u/Umbraldisappointment 22d ago

Cinnamon is actively hydrophobic, you need a lot of saliva and constantly moving it around to reach the point where you can gulp it down

u/blathers_enthusiast 22d ago

I know you're joking but I hate it when people say that

37

u/Ismokecr4k 22d ago

I have both insomnia and depression and let me tell ya, getting told to go to sleep is just as bad! "Dude, just got to bed" wow, thanks for solving my mental issues in one sentence.

30

u/blathers_enthusiast 22d ago

I also hate it when people say 'im a little OCD' when they don't actually have it.

2

u/KingOfTheAnarchists 22d ago

I'm that person, and its only at the gym where I feel/say it. I can't stand it when the plates are mixes together or certain ones "block" access to others. Maybe I'm just an asshole?

u/SnowyMuscles 22d ago

Just lie in your bed you’ll fall asleep eventually. (When I was younger: Really enjoyed the past 3 days of no sleep due to lying in bed like you told me to mum and before you ask I have tried closing my eyes that doesn’t help.)

13

u/Current_North1366 22d ago

On a similar note, I have an anxiety disorder and quite often I get things like "why are you anxious? There's nothing to be anxious about" or "Just relax" or "It's all in your head". I know they mean well, but i'm like "I know there's nothing to be anxious about and it's all in my head...that's literally the core of my issue!"

3

u/Umbraldisappointment 22d ago

"Dude try to live your life with perpetual boss music and intense dramatic sound cues maybe you will understand how it is!"

I find it this is the best way to make people understand the situation.

3

u/TheGentlemanLoser 22d ago

As someone with diagnosed depression and anxiety, I kind of go back and forth on the idea that despite being wrong, they mean well but could not have any understanding of what it is like, and annoyed that someone would say it.

As someone in the fitness lifestyle, who tracks and weighs everything I put in my mouth, truly its not easy. I try to help others, and often realize how difficult it is for some.

Even me right now, where before I was expending 2500 calories a day eating 2000 was difficult, I assumed (wrongly) now that I expend somewhere between 3500-4000 a day that eating 3000 calories would be glorious, but nope you still experience the same perceived deficit, and even more so, its more grueling because at sub 10% bodyfat, if I literally have no room for error just to shave .15 of a lb.

I always say to people who want to get fit, it doesn't get easier, it actually get harder the more fit you get, so don't get into it thinking you will just get to a level of fitness and be chillaxing, its a commitment and lifestyle.

Walls. Specifically, punching them.

Tried it after watching The Pacifier as a kid, and I was in pain for weeks after. I can't believe the movies lied to me!

3

u/yzlautum 22d ago

I had to pay over a grand in bills from punching walls in my old apt. That was just me after moving out. Lived there for 8 years. I’m a drunk and have severe mental health problems. It doesn’t even phase me to punch concrete because my hands are so fucked.

As a kid I once punched a wall made of drywall, starting out very light then getting a tiny bit harder every punch.

I wasn't even mad, I was just experimenting.

Finally, the wall gave in and there's a fist-sized hole. This was not what I wanted, I just wanted a little dent.

Honestly, I do not know. Few weeks ago I've walked 500 miles, and somewhete along the way there was a mental shift, I went from "I cannot do this, my legs are broken and I have multiple blisters the size of my fingers" to "shit, I did this. What else can I do?", right now all the things I thought were impossible for me seem like they are easy to achieve. I went from "I can never lose any weight" to spending hours exercising every day, from "I just keep eating" to actually following a diet, etc.

37

u/GhettoGoulash 22d ago

But would you walk 500 more?

2

u/Lamprophonia 22d ago

I know EXACTLY what you mean.

Last week my fat ass ran 9 MPH for 30 seconds. I never thought I could run that fast for so long. My gut was practically vibrating it was bouncing so hard and fast. I was beaming for 2 days, so proud that I could have done that. Last night I went up to 10.5 MPH for 30 seconds just to test it. The guy next to me went up to 12, so that's my goal for next month. I want to be able to run 12 MPH for at least one 30 second burst. Last month I'd have been like "no fucking way I can do that, that's literally insane", but now I'm like "fuck yah, I bet I can do that!"
