Protests in support of Alexei Navalny take place across Russia

Hundreds have been arrested in demonstrations in over 60 Russian cities in support of Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader and critic of President Vladimir Putin. Thousands have taken to the streets of Moscow and surrounding cities to demand the release of Navalny, who was arrested on January 17 upon his return to Moscow from Germany. He is still detained, and is due to appear in court early February.

Ah, I see, thank you! Can the protests make a difference, do you think? I hope he safely makes it through this and successfully brings about change for Russia.

The protests are a way to declare that they don't want anymore to have criminals in power.

I understand. I meant more like, is it bound to make any positive difference for the people? Not that I think they are wrong to protest regardless, I’m simply trying to understand the situation for the people more clearly.

To have a change, they firstly need to say that they don't accept Putin & Co. Afaik, certainly youths don't want to have them in power. Midage and olds (>50) have ussr syndrome and they're afraid of changes. However, youths drive the future, that's a simple fact. The main outcome of such protests is eroding of Putin's regim legimacy: step by step people come to understanding and acceptance of such stuff. For instance, nowadays I have clear understanding that I live in fascist criminal state. The Russia state won't survive without legimacy of power. The lack of legimacy will cause a chain of events in future.

ussr syndrome

That's a great phrase. Like Stockholm syndrome, but nostalgic for standing in line half the day to buy food.

Thank you for your insight! I actually know a gay woman who is Russian, and lives in Russia with her partner, and I just think about that a lot.
