Facts and Figures about the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States:

✧✧✧✧✧

From the very beginning, the damage of the pandemic has been exacerbated by disinformation around mitigation practices and denialism around the severity and survivability of COVID-19. When the COVID vaccine was released in record time, many optimistically believed the end of the pandemic was on the horizon. Unfortunately, more than two years since the pandemic began, disinformation continues to kill, with an estimated 234,000 voluntary COVID deaths in the U.S. occurring from June 2021 through March 2022 as large groups of mostly white, rural Americans continue to refuse the COVID vaccine.

r/DeathsofDisinfo is a subreddit created to respectfully discuss the societal trauma that has resulted from COVID denialism and vaccine disinformation, including the extraordinary burdens placed on healthcare and other frontline workers. Additionally, this subreddit focuses on the complex feelings of grief experienced by those who's loved ones died after deliberately choosing not to protect themselves from a novel and deadly virus.

Debunking Disinformation GOP Rep Warns That Chinese Balloon May Have ‘Bioweapons’ From ‘Wuhan

https://www.yahoo.com/news/gop-rep-warns-chinese-balloon-173807033.html

Oh jeez. the stupid it burns fiercely.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) casually suggested to Fox News on Friday that the suspected Chinese spy balloon floating over the United States could contain “bioweapons” from “Wuhan,” invoking the “lab leak theory” that’s been embraced by Republicans.

After saying the balloon “never should have been allowed” to cross over into the U.S., the Kentucky lawmaker then fear-mongered that the craft could be loaded down with weaponized viruses. “My concern is that the federal government doesn't know what's in that balloon,” he asserted. “Is that bioweapons in that balloon? Did that balloon take off from Wuhan?”

Comer, of course, was referencing the theory that COVID-19 was engineered by Chinese virologists at a Wuhan laboratory, possibly with the help and funding of American scientists. Comer, who has promised investigations into the origins of COVID-19, has also alleged that former Biden chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci “was warned early on that the virus appeared manmade” but instead “attempted to cover it up.”

Disinformation Spreader Ranting "Rambutan" did get vaccinated, after taking 5 months to recover from Covid in early 2022. His mother died from Covid in October 2021 and his daughter "Durian" is on her second bout, but that isn't stopping Rambutan from continuing to post anti-vax and Covid denial on Facebook.

Debunking Disinformation First day of class anecdotes

Went to my first day of class and my liberal professor who teaches sociology and social justice, is a paramedic and lawyer, decided to tell an anecdote about her friend. She said her friend was diagnosed with ALS and that her friend said the doctor said it was directly linked to the vaccine.

I thought it was completely inappropriate so I looked into it on my laptop in class and turns out there is zero evidence of that claim and it's actually covid that can cause ALS. During break i talked to her about it and showed her the data and she did correct herself infront of class.

I don't know why people who aren't medical professionals think they are capable or have enough knowledge and expertise to say things like that and put other people in danger.

Anyways, that's my story. Thanks for reading!

Debunking Disinformation Extensive report on disinfo and Canadian deaths

News story:
COVID-19 misinformation contributed to 2,800 Canadian deaths, report suggests
https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/covid-19-misinformation-contributed-to-2-800-canadian-deaths-report-suggests-1.6247220

Report PDF:
https://cca-reports.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Report-Fault-Lines-digital.pdf

It's 131 pages of exhaustive summary of all the sources of disinformation, examples and tactics for correcting misinformation, from Russian troll farms to the $$$ that grifters make from spreading lies, to how to talk to family members, and more.

Note that the 2800 Canadian deaths only applies to a 9-month period in 2021 and not all the years since the COVID misinformation campaign started, so the number is actually much higher.

Disinformation Spreader My FIL died of COVID almost a year ago at age 62. I commented briefly about it on a Twitter thread and this person used it to try and push a conspiracy theory. I’m still shaking in anger. I know he’s a troll, but why are so many people like this now? There’s a complete lack of empathy. It’s awful.

Death by Disinformation I don’t know how to go through with the disaster on my own

I am questioning on everything about life after I heard that my grandma passed away because China lifted the lockdown and she thought it was safe for her to buy medicines from pharmacy because nobody she knew got involved with covid-19 before the policy suddenly changed overnight last month. I told them the outside was not safe since the pandemic started. I am in California all by myself and trying to matriculate in medical school. Now I cannot imagine the world after Chinese new year. I tried everything to avoid covid-19 not for experiencing loss and suffering.

Debunking Disinformation I an suspicious of the mind-body connection thanks to the "prayer warriors" and other pseudoscientists.

(I was unsure what flair to add, so I picked the closest one)

Why do we have so many loved ones of COVID sufferers proclaiming themselves "prayer warriors" and insisting prayers work as well as (or better than) medicine?

Because of a widespread belief that emotional health leads directly to physical health. AKA the mind-body connection.

It's well-known that in people who identify as religious, prayer is an effective booster of emotional well-being.
How, then, do we make the big jump to happiness = good physical health? Through a combination of neuroscience, hormonal studies, and plain old intuition.
The negative effect cortisol-- the stress hormone-- has on our long-term physical health is by now well-known. As are the positive effects of oxytocin and serotonin(though the role of that last one is being recently called into question).

At this point, we have enough scientific heft under our belts to strengthen our belief that it's settled: good emotional health, the majority of the time, equals good physical health. The mind-body connection is settled law of nature, science, and medicine as far as we're concerned.

And thanks to the snake-oil-drinking clowns, I'm suspicious of all that.

Utilizing knowledge of the mind-body connection lazily, like a magic mantra. Forgoing actually effective treatments because they don't make them feel comfortable, because to far too many people, happiness and emotional wellness has become reduced to feeling comfortable.
The Secret and MLMs actively encouraging people to kick others out of their lives they deem "negative", defined as "makes me uncomfortable" which in practice was probably honesty and concern about getting on a bad path.

I am fascinated by the mind-body connection, but I am put off exploring it further, because of all the antivaxxers and "prayer warriors" weaponizing it. I don't want to give the pseudoscientists any satisfaction or credibility.

So I find myself pooh-poohing too many people's claim that emotional stress hurts their physical health. I introduce a separation between emotional and physical health which is probably not correct. I find myself getting angry at studies saying that people in relationships, religious people, and people who meditate are physically healthier than those without/those who do not, all because of the emotional booster.

I notice more and more right-wingers are starting to use "unhappy" as an insult, and I fear a narrow and official state definition of "happiness" should they get sufficiently in charge.

How do we actually use the mind-body connection for good? Because I feel we're in a race against time, before the pseudoscientists capture it for evil ends forever.

Death After Discharge "Parakeet" had age and medical history working against her, but that didn't stop her from posting anti-vax memes all over Facebook. After getting hospitalized with Covid on October 12, she made only one last Facebook post before dying at home on December 23.

Death by Disinformation my grandma passed away last year

i don’t know if this is the right sub, mods pls remove if it isn’t.

it still hurts for me to talk about it but i feel like i need an outlet and hopefully i can find some people who went through the same. last year my grandma passed away because my aunt, my grandmother’s caretaker, was anti vax and anti mask. my aunt caught covid and passed it to my 96 yo grandma. my aunt was very ill from it but survived, sadly my grandma didn’t. this was during the height of omicron when lockdowns and restrictions were still enforced, so we weren’t allowed to visit grandma. it was clear she won’t make it so she was transferred to hospice and someone there was kind enough to set up a camera for us. i watched her lie on her bed unconscious. i kept the stream on the whole night and til the next day and witnessed the moment when she gasped for her last breath and passed away.

my grandma was the kindest person i knew. i lost my mother when i was a baby so my grandma raised me like her own. my aunt has always been mentally ill, so she lived by herself. my grandma knew this and insisted on staying w my aunt because my grandma was so loving she couldn’t bear seeing her daughter (my aunt) live alone.

when grandma got ill from covid my aunt refused to take her to the hospital. aunt has always been paranoid about “western medicine” and believes her religion gives immunity from disease. when we broke in to check on grandma she threatened to call police. when it was clear grandma was not doing well, we called the ambulance. my aunt tried to block the paramedics from entering the home. aunt disappeared after they took grandma. when grandma passed she messaged the family saying taking grandma to the hospital was what killed her, basically accusing us of killing grandma. she didn’t attend the funeral.

i wanted to be kind to her as i thought this was what my grandma would want but the best i can do is simply not talk to her. the rest of the family have already cut her off and none of us knows where she is.

edit: thank you everyone for the love and kindness, it made me cry…!
