Fascinating article. One thing I felt was overlooked are the demands for PhD's to continue working on research and supporting their communities and why it could lead to fraud.

If it later turns out to be true, especially when it comes to matters of commerce and economics, who, what and how should published work be audited?

Academia is in a rough place. There's no profitability in auditing (ROI in the short term is probably effectively universally negative), and the traditional peer review system is way too prone to nepotism/favoritism and other biases because there is no infrastructure for third-party auditing since research institutions won't pay for it and often won't release their data publicly because of for-profit publishing.

The barrier to entry in academia being so absurdly high (with laughably little evidence that such barriers lead to better and more effective researchers/research, to say nothing of the additional barriers posed by reliance on arbitrary and unscientific education and testing systems) compounds on that exclusivity-driven fragmentation of knowledge to create what is effectively a club ruled by tenure rather than by scientific fact.

In short, the lack of auditing infrastructure is a symptom of a deeply insufficient academia, not a cause for academia's inadequacies. Science may ultimately not be compatible with the profit motive.
