Very common in Indonesia, but we hang out mostly as a group/clique.

In Syria (and can probably apply in many other parts in middle east and north Africa): pretty common in the cities, less common in villages and the country side.

Common in the United States, but most people have more friends of the same sex than the opposite sex.

Very common in Finland, and I'm pretty sure it's common in the other Nordic countries as well.

Very common in the US in California. All age groups. Live in Southern California and everyone hangs out with each other, men, women, boys, girls. Teenagers. It’s not weird at all.

As common as everywhere else. But of course it depends on the person and the amount of friends that person has. Imho, friendship is something "finite" in the snese that the more friends you have, either the more unequal the friendships are between each other or the more diluted they are, and, when you have a few little friends, regardless of sex it tends to be deep and warm. However when it comes to groups of friends, say 4-6 people, for what I see, people of the same sex tend to be more common, but thats purely anecdotical and the previous statements completely subjective to my own opinion so...

Yeah the point is that is very common, yes

Common in Sweden. Actually, looking at my closest friend group, I'm pretty sure exactly 50% are women.

Is it though? When I (m) was visiting with a good friend (f) everyone assumed we were a maried couple. Like 9 out of 10 times, it was just clear we were either engaged or married. In the beginning we said "no we're just friends" but ended up with just saying "oh we're marrying soon"... "yes, you will be invited"

It is common to have friends from the opposite sex. But in my opinion, it would be quite uncommon to travel one on one alone with a platonic friend of the opposite sex. It might just be a cultural thing or my perception.

Is it though?

Definitely is.

People here might be more prone to shipping people together, but that doesn't mean they don't accept platonic friendships.

Also, some of the questions you got was probably just teasing - it's quite usual here for older people to do that.

As far as I know, it's common in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, etc and people usually have more friends from the same sex, unless the school/college is religiously affiliated or has explicit rules forbidding opposite genders from interacting.
