Here in the Czech Republic we have Seznam, which is a local competitor to Google that quite a lot of people use. (The name literally means 'list') http://seznam.cz http://mapy.cz

mapy.cz is ridiculously good for hiking in the entire Europe (and possibly world but I don't know that). I highly recommend it for any European. Just switch to tourist overlay.

Gumtree is probably more popular than ebay for auction sites in Australia.

We have Gumtree in the UK but it isn’t an auction site, it’s similar to Facebook Marketplace

LINE is the most popular messaging app here.

Line is very popular in Thailand too.

Line was the most popular messaging app years ago but it's slowly being replaced by WhatsApp here in Indonesia.

So anime didn't lie to me in this one case.

We have Marktplaats here in the Netherlands, where people can sell their old stuff to other people. And we have Bol.com which is an online shopping site.

Marktplaats is great for used furniture! You can furnish whole apartment there. The platform itself is owned by eBay.

Mercado Libre is the Argentinean Ebay/Amazon of Latin America, even today while losing ground they remain strong in South America. They also changed their logo from this to this one with the onset of the pandemic.

Rappi is a Colombian food app similar to Uber Eats

Back in the old days Argentinean Taringa and Metroflog were widely used blogs by all latin american spanish speakers.

I love the logo change, classy and cute ftw!

I'm always impressed at how far our online stuff reaches. I suppose I shouldn't, we've always had one of the highest rates of people connected to the net in the region IIRC.

We have mercado livre in other country’s of LATAM so its not exclusive to Argentina

10

u/Lazzen Mexico Aug 14 '21

I literally said it's common place in latin america, specifically south america

Yes I know, it’s just that that wasn’t the question. And it’s not related to language either. (I guess the company IS Argentinian though. That could have been specified in the comment for a better point)

Kijiji is the Canadian Craiglist or Gumtree eg: classified ads etc.

We got willhaben in Austria, it's a marketplace like ebay. "Will haben" means "want to have".

iFood is Brazil’s doordash - works better than uber eats and other similar ones.

Gojek;

It initially started as something like an Uber, but with motorcycles. Then it expanded to cars, taxis, limousines, big cars, and then to food ordering service, and then to a lot of services like massage, makeup, house-cleaning, house-moving, buying groceries, buying movie tickets, medical assistance, online shopping, and etc. It also has its own e-currency that works in a lot of physical vendors in malls & restaurants & gives a lot of discounts.

When I went to Indonesia it literally felt like this country wouldn't be able to function without Gojek. You can order just about anything there - food, transport, services

In India we have a payments system called UPI (Unified Payments Interface) which is a form of mobile phone payments linked to your bank account and payments made with QR codes of phone numbers. Tons of fintech companies have apps for facilitating payments on this system, including Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe.

Yes this! Even the street vendors have their QR codes.

Swish! It's popular here because it's an agreement between banks that lets us consumers pay or transfer up to 15 000€ in an instant. The only thing you need is a "BankID" and the app "Swish".

"Zelle" is a similar app in the US.
