I love the anticipation when seeing those shitposts with recent dates. It's like watching an action movie when some schmuck thug tries to bully the protagonist.

This one was a bigger hit to me, than the others I've read.

Holy shit; partially open at least one eye! She actually meant this...at the end of 2021. HOW?!

391

u/SenatorPardek Jan 07 '22

If you only consume your news from tucker Carlson and your Facebook feed of like minded individuals. I can imagine a person thinking that it’s been “proven” that covid is just a little cold, the hospitals are actually full of the vaccinated, and that any information that exists that might contradict that is just Democratic propaganda.

230

u/JimWilliams423 Jan 07 '22

If you only consume your news from tucker Carlson and your Facebook feed of like minded individuals.

All they have to do is listen to republican politicians, the party has overtly started telling people its better to catch covid than it is to get vaxxed:

  • Rep Nancy Mace on Fox
"Natural immunity gives you 27x more protection against future covid than a vaccination."

  • Rep Matt Gaetz on ONAN
"The best vaccine we've found is Mother Nature's vaccine, it's contracting the virus."

134

u/BigEditorial Jan 07 '22

This has always been the stupidest argument to me.

Even if this is true, what's the best way of ensuring that you survive your bout with COVID with minimal consequences? It's to get vaccinated!

So "vax everyone (so they can survive the infection and have superior immunity)" is still the endgame.

116

u/Redtwooo Jan 07 '22

The US mortality rate is still around 2%, so 1 in 50 known American cases has resulted in death. Hoping to leave it up to "natural immunity" from surviving an infection is gambling with your life. While certain factors increase your risk, there are plenty of cases where the victim is apparently of otherwise good health. And even if you don't die, a significant portion of the cases experience severe tissue damage, which right now we don't have any idea how long it's going to take to recover to normal, if ever.

I don't want to die, and I definitely don't want to wheeze just walking around or get short of breath in moderate conversation.

You're assuming that the truth is a relevant factor here, and that, surrounded by better information systems, the outcome would be different. The entire world of observable reality is an abstraction to people like this - a not-entirely-necessary component of the war for power and cultural dominance. They know what they're saying is bullshit, but the truth makes them feel things they don't like, so they just substitute a different "truth" so they can feel what they want to feel. They're trying to overwhelm the rest of us with that bullshit to such an extent that it will become, for all intents and purposes, shared reality. It's a choice. They aren't naive and they aren't victims.

26

u/SenatorPardek Jan 07 '22

I don’t think merely exposing them to real information would change anything. But at this point they don’t seek anything else out: as you pointed out, because political identity post trump (because trump equals racism) is a core part of folks idea of who they are. If the Trump view is covid is a joke: there you go. But I would also argue Fox News is more of a leader of the Republican Party then even trump at this point, as evidenced by the Trump Owens vaccine interview

17

u/UncleInternet Jan 07 '22

I think we're in agreement on all counts.

275

u/inplayruin Jan 07 '22 Silver Gold Platinum Helpful

It is a mistake to believe they are too stupid to realize they are being fooled. They are ignorant, to be sure, but their ignorance is a choice. Many of them have the intellectual capacity to do better, but they are paralyzed by fear. This goes far beyond Covid. We use euphemisms to excuse their failures, but the 2020 election returns are absolutely damning. Trump won a majority of the vote in somewhere around 80% of American counties. But over 70% of America's GDP is produced in counties won by President Biden. This is not a coincidence. The Trump base is disproportionately populated by people utterly confounded by the modern world. This breeds fear. These people are constantly terrified, of everything. Hence their gun fetish, hence their fear of immigrants, etc. They cosplay tough, but they are nothing but scared children. These people are absolutely terrified of Covid, do not allow their self serving lies to obscure this fact.

They seek out people and messaging that allows them to pretend they aren't sick with worry. It is a defense mechanism. This is why so much of their propaganda accuses the government of wielding fear as a weapon. These people are constantly terrified, so they presume you are too. Some are just too stupid to function, but all of them just want their mommy to make the bad feelings go away. It was sad, before they weaponized their neurosis against our nation.

53

u/Nyssa_aquatica Present Company Excluded Jan 07 '22

To be fair, the modern world - its economy, its inhumane systems, its horrors, its proven destructive capacity - is pretty fear-inducing.

I’ve felt for a long time that republicans feeing fear and loss is legit — their response to it, and their explanations for it, are not.

44

u/SenatorPardek Jan 07 '22

I think that’s a good analysis. Willful ignorance is a choice. But at this point most hardcore trump people I encounter will absolutely dismiss anything that doesn’t come from “their” sources out of hand.

77

u/jtan212 Jan 07 '22

If a person is jabbed but promotes others not to get one, now that is evil.

112

u/SenatorPardek Jan 07 '22

Indeed. Fox News has a 100 percent vaccine requirement. They all are vaccinated and they are killing people. They laugh at their own supporters as rubes. It’s sick.

I ended up in the ER in September unrelated to Covid. I saw soooo many unvaxed dragging themselves into the ER and they were alien autopsy grey.

I can't imagine that after the degree of hypoxia a person suffers to turn grey that they could survive.

158

u/liltwinstar2 Jan 07 '22

I’m not even sure where they get their news from but the trump supporters I know all seem to believe that it’s only vaxxed people getting omicron and only vaxxed people being hospitalized now.

They all seem to know someone who died or was permanently injured due to the vaccine. I know it’s BS but they’re all getting their info at the same place.

118

u/BloomsdayDevice Jan 07 '22 Take My Energy

They all seem to know someone who died or was permanently injured due to the vaccine.

They all know someone who knows someone who had X catastrophic outcome from the vaccine, but when they talk to others about it, they cut out the middle man and say they themselves know the someone who had X catastrophic outcome from the vaccine. But they don't realize that the someone they actually do know did the exact same thing, and so did the someone before that, and so they've all been citing some anecdote made up by someone dozens of degrees removed from them. And since the end of the political spectrum that is most likely to believe this nonsense are already the same people who are more likely to regard anecdotal evidence as factual, they're completely unbothered by citing something they, or anyone else, can't possibly verify.

It's fascinating, but it's also terrifying.

The heart of their opposition to Critical Race Theory (CRT) is that it says it’s not ok to be white. But of course CRT does not mention whites as a source of racism in America. It simply points out that American society, right from its inception, has embraced racism it how it governs itself (both in law and attitude). Whether it’s the founders who considered blacks as 3/5ths of a person to racism against the Irish, Chinese, Jews, Japanese etc etc.

So when CRT says American society has always been racist (systemic) these fuckers equate it as saying whites are racist, because they believe that American society is white at its core, which is of course, racist as fuck.

Same reason why people post about the "War on Christmas." Because they've been told by the media that they follow that white people, along with Christmas, America, freedom, etc., are under attack.

Hey, a few weeks ago we were at the grocery store and the cashier had the audacity to say "Happy Holidays" to the person ahead of us.

Does somebody have some pearls I can clutch?

I use that mostly unless I personally know the person. We have a decent sized Jewish population here and I'd rather perpetuate the war on Christmas than offend someone minding their own business.

It’s no longer about Christ.

Now it’s about guns, hating foreigners and democrats. I’m not a Christian, but I stand by my Christian friends that actually live in a Christ like way.

So they’re fucking psy-oping themselves into these beliefs and now they’re just stuck in a feedback loop.

Christian’s are persecuting themselves, so that they can be persecuted enough to bring back Jesus? Or something?

They’re literally crazy.

Racists view everything as an eternal struggle for dominance between races. That's why they view anti-racist whites as traitors. Or they think everyone deep down is as vile as they are and just keep quiet because of "political correctness." I once taught a student who essentially gave away the game of this mindset when I scolded him for calling Chinese people "chinks." His response was "What's the matter? We're all white here."

25

u/Traumarama79 Jan 07 '22

I think a lot of HCA awardees are just fulfilling their own mission: if you get this and die, you were weak, and you ought to be dead. The "weak people deserve to die" philosophy is central to the contemporary Republican party. If you listen to a guy like John Schmitz, who was considered too radical right to be a Republican during the Nixon administration, that's just what our modern Republican legislators are saying now. Fifty years ago, it would've been radical to, say, gut the EPA.

Anyway, I digress. What I'm saying is, I don't think anyone chooses to be this ignorant and cruel on purpose. I pity most people who vote against access to healthcare. Though they have allowed it, they have been commodified by an oligarchy.
