Lol “prayer warrior” always gets me. Nothing says “I live in a fantasy world cuz I can’t deal with reality” like that term.

364

u/TheHellCourtesan Jan 21 '22 Wholesome Giggle

The craziest thing to me is how they ask for such specific prayers as if the reason the prayer warriors aren’t beating COVID is that they only prayed for recovery and not a specific blood oxygen level or something. Like god is some kind of subway sandwich artist who’s gonna fuck up your sub if you don’t mention each ingredient.

162

u/AnAmericanLibrarian Jan 21 '22

It's basically treating prayers as magic spells.

We are talking about a certain combination of words, said with a specific intention, by specially trained people, that is supposed to have a measurable effect in the external, physical world.

It's thinking that if enough people think that the pencil will move on its own, it will move on its own.

40

u/Mr_FancyBottom Jan 21 '22

Yes exactly. It’s magical thinking.

Maybe if they assigned an individual warrior to their own section of the brainlet's already dead lung tissue they would be able to successfully pray away the damage. Instead, they're wasting prayer energy focusing on mere symptoms like oxygen levels smh

Fun fact: Studies show that prayer has zero effect unless the subject of the prayer knows they're being prayed for.

In that case, it has a small negative effect. That's right, telling someone that you're praying for them actually helps kill them. The theory is that they don't fight as hard or might not accept treatments due to believing that the prayer will work instead.

There's a discussion about this in Michener's Centennial. When the Governor of Utah said to pray for rain, I said maybe this means:

  1. Governor Cox is bad at praying.
  2. God has more important things to do.
  3. Or, there is no God.

13

u/Matelot67 Jan 21 '22

This is despite the fact that it actually says in the Bible, 'Do not test the Lord thy God!'

See also: the late, great George Carlin's thoughts on the matter.

Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!

If you read the Bible, these covid people are doing everything wrong.
Christ is depicted as a shepherd: there's a whole parable in Matthew about the sheep and the goats. Jesus speaks of his flock, often. COVID PEOPLE: "WE'RE NOT SHEEP!"

Jesus is tempted by Satan, who tells him "if you're the son of God, jump off this mountain, surely your Pops will save you." Jesus says "that's not how it works, don't tempt God." COVID PEOPLE: "GOD WILL INTERVENE TO SAVE ME IF I GET SICK."

Jesus tells people to "love thy neighbor as thyself." COVID PEOPLE: "KILL FAUCI! KILL BILL GATES! KILL JOE BIDEN! PHYSICALLY THREATEN DOCTORS AND NURSES! DON'T WEAR A MASK, TAUNT AND THREATEN PEOPLE WHO DO!"

And then they think God is going to welcome them home and give them a set of wings. These are exactly the goats Jesus is talking about in the aforementioned parable of the sheep and goats. I'm sure they THINK they're going to some magical paradise when they die, but their Favorite Book says otherwise.

50

u/Mesahorse Jan 21 '22

Many devout Christians and followers of other religions are aghast at what's happening. It's like this brand of Christian is the most unlike Christ. Christ was about finding peace with your neighbor. Look at all the parables about loving others that are less than desirable to you. They totally missed the point.

10

u/AlanStanwick1986 Jan 21 '22

I can't see how I could possibly attend a church in America, whatever Christianity has morphed into here it is pure poison. Outside of my in-laws, every "Christian" person I know is an asshole that wouldn't piss on a homeless person if they were on fire.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

The Unitarians are cool. So are the Quakers. My stepmom goes to Christ Church in Philly (that church played a big role in the Revolution), and it's very progressive.

But yeah, you gotta look for a good place. A lot of churches suck.

9

u/Kimber85 Jan 21 '22

My in-laws are Methodists and their church is really nice. They have female ministers and perform marriages for gay people, they believe Covid is real and that the Christian thing to do is get vaccinated and wear masks so that you can show your love to others by keeping them safe, it feels very “Christ-like” to me.

I grew up Southern Baptist and I’ve never met a more hateful, selfish, hypocritical group of people than the the congregants of a Southern Baptist church. My parents wonder why I don’t go to church anymore, and it’s 100% because of the way people acted at the church I grew up in.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I think evangelicalism may be in its death throes in the U.S. It's making one last push to be relevant, but its adherents are all aging and younger generations are not as keen to take up the torch. The perception that they are losing influence is causing them to lash out more.

54

u/TrooperJohn Jan 21 '22

They might be a demographic minority, and their raw numbers are thinning, but they have enormously disproportionate political power, partly due to the geographic organization of the country (which they expertly exploit), partly due to the sheer fecklessness and ineptitude of the political party that ostensibly stands for separation of church and state.

They're not going away. Latin American oligarchies stay in power with far smaller support bases.

8

u/tkp14 Jan 21 '22

And the Rethugs are working overtime to get permanent, authoritarian, minority control. If that happens we can kiss our freedoms goodbye. Especially so if they establish a fundamentalist Christian theocracy.

Prayer warrior

When on earth did that term arise?

36

u/ResetEarthPlz Jan 21 '22

Not sure exactly where/when it originated, but Wikipedia has some insight:

Within the context of dominion theology, prayer warriors see themselves as engaged in spiritual warfare against satanic forces.During the Iraq War, one aspect of the debate over U.S. involvement was a "prayer battle," with one side praying in support of the policies of the Bush Administration and the other taking an anti-war stance.Sarah Palin, the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party in the 2008 U.S. presidential elections, regularly acknowledges the support of prayer warriors in her speeches and interviews, and has spoken of them as offering a "prayer shield." As a candidate, she thanked prayer warriors for their support and spoke of divine intervention in the election as a result.

Militaristic rhetoric is baked into Christianity's founding documents. See, for instance, Ephesians 6:10-18, which explicitly places the believer in the role of soldier, enumerating the different pieces of metaphorical arms and armor. Obviously, this poetic conceit was hyperbolic in the context of a minority sect being persecuted by the Roman empire. It's meant to stiffen the spines of the (rightly) anxious.

But when Christianity becomes fused to political power in the wake of Constantine, suddenly "Christian soldiers" become a literal possibility. The line from there to the crusades and the violence of the Inquisition is winding, but it's pretty easy to follow.

The rhetoric gets reappropriated in its metaphorical (and literal) sense during the Reformation proper, and then gets rediscovered or reemphasized whenever there's a reform movement.

So when Methodism arose as a protest movement within the Church of England in the 18th century, you end up with a hymn like "Soldiers of Christ, Arise." And by the middle of the 19th century in both England and America, we see this rhetoric adopted wholesale by the evolving evangelical branches. The Salvation Army is founded in England and creates its catchy, military-march-inspired theme song: "Onward, Christian Soldiers." The hymn gains huge and enduring popularity, helping to inculcate evangelicals everywhere with the notion that their life is war, that Jesus is a feudal lord leading them into battle, and that "the world" is out to get them.

"Prayer Warrior" is popular because it helps people who don't do anything meaningful, even within the framework of Christian martial rhetoric, feel like they can appropriate the soldier role.

Edit: My main source is growing up in exactly that kind of church and singing all those songs. We had a race game where kids competed to see who could find Bible verses most quickly; it was called "Sword Drill," as your Bible was your weapon. That feels really surreal to see in print, but it was normal to me as a kid.

That kind of confidence that you are definitely going to a "reward" breeds a contempt for death that isn't healthy or sustainable (and may be part of their general disregard for covid in the first place). Just like the person said, "called my loved one home". Not, "died in misery, after drowning for days or weeks". It's placation for the masses to prevent an existential crisis, because you can't allow the masses to think. Bread and Circuses for all, and everything is fine. Even when it's not fine, it's still fine because we can make up false truths to keep everyone in check and under control. Somehow they manage to make all of this work at the same time:

  • When it's your time to die, nothing can save you
  • God knows everything, has a plan for everything
  • Pray really hard to God and he will change his plan
  • Be sure you provide plenty of details on what you expect God to do
  • God will reward good Christians with a miracle and keep a loved one alive
  • Loved one died so God must have needed them by His side

28

u/Naya3333 Jan 21 '22

Well, why are the religious people dying en masse and atheists stay alive? It's because God needs his army by his side. This logic didn't apply to gay people dying from AIDS. AIDS was God's punishment for being gay.

Pittsburgh resident here: She's a racist ass-hat who has been fired from three different broadcaster jobs (Evening anchor on WTAE, and radio host on KDKA and WJAS radio) for being a racist ass-hat, along with being a generally disgusting person.

Edit: Specifically, I believe that the order of events were:- Fired from WTAE after basically saying (in regards to a mass-shooting that happened in one of the areas around the city, which was still being investigated): "It was probably a black kid that did it, since they likely came from a broken home"
- Fired from KDKA radio, after saying something to the effect of "Park rangers should protect our monuments by picking off any protestors that may damage them."
- Fired from WJAS radio, but no details were really given, outside of it was a "personal matter"

One last edit: apparently she got picked up in Altoona, PA as of October, so she's resumed broadcasting to her crowd in Pennsyltucky.

u/among_apes Jan 21 '22 edited Jan 21 '22 I'll Drink to That

I’m in western PA. In that first summer of the pandemic until she got canceled she was constantly popping up in everyone’s feed with various friends sharing these 10-20 minute shows like these profound gotcha moments. She really solidified in people’s minds that they shouldn’t be taking the pandemic seriously because it wasn’t deadly, that they shouldn’t allow the government to take any moves to stop it because that was tyranny, and that our society was being fundamentally destroyed by masks and government intervention.

She did a lot in those early days making people pick sides. Either you watched her and you were like “eff this frantic smug lady” or you tuned in and let her assessment sink in deeply and saw her as the ultimate MAGA warrior babe.

She really impressed a lot of idiots.

She checked so many boxes: Her husband is a doctor, she had a family with teens so she was heavily on the “my teens need a normal life” kick, she was already fired from our local news station for saying people defacing statues should be shot by snipers (or something like that) so she already had the cancel culture martyr thing going.

And this is probably the icing on the cake, let’s just be honest she’s not the worst looking person in the world especially compared to the average person a Qcumber listens to or watches on twitter. So she was your typical HCA winners wet dream. I remember her doing local “open up events” when the lockdown was getting pushed back on and some of the biggest real tree camouflage tshirt wearing shit birds in my feed had posed pics with their arm around her looking happier than a pig in shit. They were acting like they just met trump. I bet you they could tell me what her hair smelled like.

Eff Wendy bell she definitely definitely has blood on her hands

42

u/CliffyClaven Jan 21 '22

Used to live in Pittsburgh, and had friends there still until the pandemic started.

Once they started following Wendy Bell I had to move on from them. They kept saying "I don't believe the numbers." No logic behind it, it was like a question of faith.

Wendy has great hair though.

Wendy Bell was a pretty well liked local news anchor here in Pittsburgh until 6 years ago, when she was fired for a Facebook post she wrote in the below link after a mass shooting in a local neighborhood.

https://pbmf.org/programs/pbmf-statement-on-wtae-anchors-facebook-post/

After that, she spent a couple of years trying to go about being this positive, but generally apolitical person on social media. However, once we got to 2019, she started getting into right-wing politics and had a show on a popular local AM station where she was also fired from in 2020 after suggesting people who vandalize statues should be shot on site. She said numerous other nutty things before this on that station, but that one was the final straw with them

Think back to Nov 2020. The vaccine was just about to be rolled out. If 45 had won the election their would have been a massive effort to roll out and PROMOTE the vaccine on right wing media (RWM). Instead 45 pours all of his energy into planning & nearly executing a coup. Biden comes into office and they find there’s literally no infrastructure for vaccine rollout. To try to cripple the new regime, RWM , fosters a giant vaccine misinformation campaign. These people (RWM) have blood on their hands and if there is a hell, they’re for sure first in line for admission.
