I just heard about his death and immediately came here to nominate him for the Herman Cain Award.

I do not usually take joy in other people's death, but considering how significant Olavo has been in the pandemic-denialist movement in Brazil and how much misinformation he has single-handedly spread, I've gotta say, this award is well deserved.

He should be remembered as a mass murderer.

145

u/Plutonian_Dive Jan 25 '22

He will be, for a while.

As will Bolsonaro, but this one will be on history books as a genocider.

31

u/ludsmile Jan 25 '22

Absolutely. I hope he will. Unfortunately, a lot of people currently in power (including our dickhead president) have high regard for him.

I think it might be one of those situations that it takes a few decades for history to accurately judge his character, which is unfortunate.

49

u/IrisMoroc Jan 25 '22

He nominated and bestowed the award himself.

26

u/fupamancer Jan 25 '22

A flat earther?? I mean, at any point in time anyone go, “This guy who thinks the Earth is flat said vaccines are bad. Not sure he’s an expert.”

65

u/jellyfish_bitchslap Jan 25 '22

This isn’t even the worst theory of his.

He believed Pepsi was made and tested with cells of aborted fetuses.

I’m not fucking joking.

I can’t find sources in english but a national newspaper had to fact check it. You can translate it from portuguese if you want.

20

u/PaloVerdePride Jan 25 '22

That was going around in the late Seventies with US “prolifers” - I think Clairol was supposed to be using aborted fetuses in their shampoo, too.

46

u/jellyfish_bitchslap Jan 25 '22 edited Jan 25 '22

Yeah, most of Olavo's “work” was past century conspiracy theories from US translated to brazilian portuguese. Even the red scare.

There was no anti-vax movement in Brazil until the last years, people used to take their vaccines religiously and we had infrastructure to vaccinate to vaccinate up to ten million people a day.

Since Olavo was Bolsonaro's guru, vaccines became discredited by the government and everything became a shitshow.

25

u/w0rdyeti Jan 25 '22

So the moniker “Trump of the Tropics” is well-earned, then? If there is an upside to this pandemic, it is that it is removing the evil/stupid from the gene pool …

37

u/Kidrepellent Jan 25 '22

Bolsonaro is Trump without the complete incompetence and stupidity. As much as Trump has done permanent, irreversible damage to the country (to the extent that I, as a citizen of it living abroad since before his presidency, now have no plans to ever return), if he had been a Bolsonaro clone, it would be on a scale you couldn't imagine. Trump destroyed shit because he had a bunch of dick-suckers fawning over him to do his bidding, because he was too dim to do it himself. Bolsonaro doesn't need the yes men. If he were the US president, there would be an actual hot civil war. Not that one of those isn't coming, but it would be here now.

15

u/PaloVerdePride Jan 25 '22

Yeah, I remember hearing good things about Brazil’s health infrastructure for years, pre-Bolsonaro.

Which ironically is what everyone in the USA thought about ours pre-Covid — hideously expensive, but at least competent & technologically organized, right? Lol 😢

7

u/PenaltyPractical1908 Punish me!!!! Jan 25 '22

9

US translated to brazilian portuguese. Even the red scare.

^This. To me he was a cheap and crazier version of Ayn Rand. On one hand he blatantly bit her "philosophy" of preaching in self benefit and the idea that cigarrettes are good for ones health but, on the other, even Rand wasn't enough of a nutjob to call Isaac Newton a "fraud" and question his Laws of Gravity.

NOPE. I'm just waiting for him to send mass-texts on Whatsapp about how sad it is that "science and philosophy have lost their greatest thinker of modern time" or some shit like that.

14

u/DarkTechnocrat Jan 25 '22

How did your uncle feel about his flat earth views? That seems like it would be a bridge too far for even conspiracy theorists.

19

u/Gabby-Abeille Jan 25 '22

I'm not the person who you asked, but I also have an alt-right uncle (who doesn't), and his response was that we were misinterpreting it.

Olavo de Carvalho said that he didn't study the subject, but that he watched some videos and didn't find anything that refuted the earth being flat. About the earth being round, he said that nobody is sure about anything and that the intelligent people investigate. He also said something about the flat earthers being the last intelligent people left in Brazil or something like that.

I don't know what we could have misinterpreted on this but ok.

Dude's one of the biggest far right gurus in Brazil. Hated universal healthcare (though he, of course, traveled to Brazil for treatment, to the point of being investigated for skipping lines recently, leading him to flee the country on an air force plane last year), was a flat earther, claimed cigarettes don't cause health problems (even as it causes him issues), claims Pepsi is made from aborted fetuses since the early 2000s. And that's all off the top of my head.

Dude was simply full of shit. A man determined to fight against any notion of reality and common sense. Also highly influential on the PoS on the Brazilian presidency, because of course he was.

85

u/foschiera Jan 25 '22

Don't forget to mention he was an astrologist who didn't even graduate elementary school yet still "taught" "philosophy" on his own paid course, and some fools were even proud to say they were his "students".

50

u/spaceaustralia Jan 25 '22 edited Jan 25 '22

didn't even graduate elementary school

Just to be pedantic. He kind of did. He dropped out on what was then the second half of what is now called "ensino fundamental", in the year before high school. It's just that he dropped out around 10 years before "ensino primário" and "ginásio" got fused into what is now the 1st stage of Brazillian education.

Essentially, if you're using US education terms, he dropped out at the last year of middle school at age 14 (assuming the dumb motherfucker never got held back).

7

u/foschiera Jan 25 '22

Oh I see, I got it mixed up then, I thought he dropped out on the 4th grade of the "primário", but now I see it was the 4th grade of the "ginásio".

He has been living in the USA for a very long time while spewing the most vile conspiracy theories about everything (like aborted fetuses in diet Pepsi) and being so widely spoken against any "communist" Brazilian policy, like our public health care system, yet when he had a heart issue recently he readily flew back to Brazil to be able to get free treatment, and he even managed to cut the line and get priority treatment thanks to Bolsonaro's corrupt influence over the public hospital.

During his stay in Brazil he was summoned to appear before the Brazilian federal police that wanted some answers about his involvement in misinformation campaigns funded by Bolsonaro's allies, although he wasn't considered a criminal or fugitive, so after he got treated he likely fled by car to a neighboring country and flew back to the USA, since there was no indication that he went through a Brazilian airport.

How ironic that covid finally got to him in the USA, so in the end he had to either suffer at home with no treatment or choose to go to a local hospital but incur in debt even after death, since the hospital may go after his estate in order to recover the money now.

9

u/ludsmile Jan 25 '22

I mean, surely he's made a lot of money selling his conspiracy-theory courses, no? His estate can probably deal with the medical debt....

He was one of main reasons why Brazil is so fucked up today. He was a mentor not only from Bolsonaro, but for a good chunk of far right movements in the country, like the MBL (Free Brazil Movement), one of the biggesr far right libertarian groups out there which is now trying to distancing from his image while saying "we are just a group which wants the best for Brazil and the end of corruption"...

Even his daughter isn't sad at all, because he wanted her to follow his footsteps but she denied several times to the point of earn the hate from his own father. She is not celebrating, but not crying either.

Hope this shows to flat eaters, anti vaxxers and others morons in the country how wrong they are.

8

u/ludsmile Jan 25 '22

Dang, I haven't lived in Brazil for 7-ish years and hadn't heard about MBL since high-school a decade ago. I did not realize they were far right, I thought they were just a "normal" libertarian group (as far as there are normal libertarians...).

Good to know. I'll know to avoid people who are involved with it now (the main guy I knew has long ago moved abroad).

As a leftist who lives abroad, I hate how much all of these far-righters who say they love Brazil jump at the very first opportunity to leave.... I, on the other hand, can't wait to move back.

Also, Heloísa de Carvalho rocks. Y'all reading this should go follow her on Twitter.

(translated to English) https://istoe-com-br.translate.goog/ce-cidade-que-vacinou-100-dos-adultos-nao-tem-morte-por-covid-ha-7-meses/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp

The municipality of Guaramiranga (CE), about 105 km from Fortaleza, proves the effectiveness of vaccines against Covid-19, especially in more serious cases and deaths from the disease.

According to a report in Jornal Nacional, on TV Globo, the city has vaccinated about 96% of the population over 11 years old with two doses plus the booster dose, and 100% of adults, and has not recorded any deaths from Covid since June. of 2021.

Nobody's even been to their one hospital for covid until this month, when a patient who had epilepsy and hypertension and was not yet boosted had to go for a four-day stay before going home to finish their recovery.

Sounds like tyranny to me.

Unfortunately he was not so known outside Brazil, but if he was more famous out there, everyone in this sub would definitely know and agree he was a very good contender to be one of the highest Herman Cain Award winners.

Also, he was already very ill because he was a chain-smoker during his whole life and used to say that cigarettes aren’t really bad for you and all the studies that showed otherwise are just part of a conspiracy so, yeah, not the sharpest tool in the shed (he also used to say that Pepsi soda uses aborted fetuses as a sugar substitute)

And Brazil is suddenly a slightly better place.

11

u/littlecheese915 Jan 25 '22

Amazing how covid kills so many covid deners. I'm so confussed by this phenomenon why doesn't covid kill the vaxed people? It's almost like the vaccine works. But then again covid is a hoax so it really doesn't matter. JIC /s

Back in May 2020 he tweeted O medo de um suposto vírus mortífero não passa de historinha de terror para acovardar a população e fazê-la aceitar a escravidão como um presente de Papai Noel

(The fear of a supposed deadly virus is nothing but a horror story to cow the population into accepting slavery as a gift from Santa Claus) (Translated by Deepl)
