I guess "nobody in my household ever got COVID!" might have been a premature celebration

Nobody in my house got COVID either. We put our faith in god science and got vaccinated and took lots of precautions before the vaccine was available.

My daughter finally got it. We're all normally very cautious about masking, but we took them off while taking some pictures with my in-laws. She started showing symptoms a few days later. (She's homeschooled, so not a lot of other opportunities to be infected.) At that time, she was testing negative. Since we don't want to be sick, even with a cold, we started taking precautions then, like sticking to separate parts of the house and masking while in common areas– acting as if we were all three positive.

Husband called his parents to let them know that she was symptomatic and might have exposed them, and his mom mentioned she'd been getting over a "bad cold." She'd taken no precautions or even bothered to mention it until then.

Sure enough, kiddo tested positive the next day. Now, all three of us have had three doses of vaccine. Kiddo had had three doses of Pfizer, and we've had three doses of Moderna. Her symptoms were mild enough that, if I didn't know better, I'd think it was just allergies. She had a fever of 99 and 100 for two days, and it was immediately knocked out by Tylenol. She took precautions and wore a mask the day she was symptomatic because she'd been around some cousins who are unvaccinated. To our knowledge, nobody she was around ever got sick. That includes us, her parents, who share a home with her. And we got tested to confirm as much. I was actually surprised on that one. Something so simple as a mask and a little distancing actually did prevent spread.

But that one time of her removing her mask around a close family member was enough for her to be infected herself. And that family member just didn't give a shit about having given her or anyone else covid. That person works with a lot of people and straight up said upon leading that she was covid positive that she wouldn't test or report it. Then she encouraged my husband to lie to his own employer.

This same person almost lost her husband to covid a few months ago. Had it not been for me insisting he be tested and check his blood oxygen and insisting he go to the ER because of things I've read on THIS SUBREDDIT, he likely would be dead. Memories are short.

So I can't say we did "everything right but got it anyway" like I've seen people claim. I know full well that there were moments where we went without masks and took a risk. But I can also point to those exact moments, since they're so few, and know where we might have been exposed if we did start to show symptoms.

So yeah... Masks work. Also, trust nobody, because it only takes once. We won't be trusting them again.

u/bigtime_porgrammer Jun 07 '22

Over the years, it's always some get-together with friends or family where I catch a cold or something else. I think I'm the only one who's ever cancelled on something because I was sick and didn't want to expose others. It's annoying how oblivious and inconsiderate some are.

51

u/FateLeita Jun 07 '22

I used to have a 'friend' (wife of BFF of husband), who would always invite us over if she was sick. It got to be a running joke between my (now-ex) husband and I that if we were invited over, Stephanie must be sick, it happened so often. Lost track of them years ago, and divorced not too long after that, but last I talked to her, she had two young twins and she was 'doing her research' on vaccines. I've thought about them occasionally and wonder if they all survived COVID.

34

u/Nobodyville Jun 07 '22

Honestly that's been one of the good things to come out of covid... the acceptance of "I'm not feeling well and don't want to expose anyone else" as a reason to cancel appointments. I used to feel like I was obligated to go to things unless I had a fever or flu symptoms. Now it's 100% fine to call and reschedule things without getting attitude from business and offices.

Hold up here. There is a world of difference between "we let our guard down a few times over the course of 2+ years" and the "fuck the vaccine, mark of the devil, MAGA, etc etc etc" nonsense we see here.

Please don't be too hard on yourselves.

125

u/JennJayBee Team Moderna Jun 07 '22

I'm not, but I also at the same time realize that people have been using "we vaccinated and masked and did everything right and still got it" as an argument against masking and vaccinating.

I don't want to be used as one such example, because I'm well aware that we took risks and how my daughter was exposed.

54

u/Robj2 Jun 07 '22

Everytime I cross a street I look both way for cars.

And everytime a pedestrian gets plowed over in Reno (about one every month or two), I don't tell myself--"See, looking both ways for cars is STOOOOOOPID!"

26

u/JennJayBee Team Moderna Jun 07 '22

Unfortunately, we've got those people who do think like that. I've already had one family member use my kid as an example of how "they got it, and they've been super careful."

And I had to correct her that, no, my kid wasn't masked at the time, so she didn't get it despite being masked. The mask probably would have worked just fine if we'd kept them on.

This is so true. Huge difference in having to continue on with life as safely as possible vs refusing any and all mitigation efforts. I was hard on myself when 3 of the 8 members of my family got omicron. We had lived the majority of Covid in isolation. After being fully vaccinated we had to begin living life. It was clear Covid was not going to go away anytime soon. We continued masking, avoiding indoor gathering, superspreaders(with the exception of my older children returning to in person school) ect. When it hit our house I felt this extreme guilt for some reason. Many people on this sub reminded me not to be so hard on myself too. Returning to life has some risk and we do the best we can with all the tools available.

My dad and sister are both fully vaxxed and went to europe recently. They didnt mask over there. My dad ended up covid positive shortly after returning. I still mask. and have been making sure my dad has food and is doing well. Never got it. I tested neg a few times.

I am also a health pro who works with covid patients all the time.

We are currently wondering if our neighbor is stuck in Europe. He didn't come back when expected and another neighbor mowed his grass. Hoping his family is okay.

We did exactly what you and your family have done in approaching Covid. Only difference is I have 5 children. We ended up doing virtual school the 2nd year and I pulled my two younger children out of public school this past year but the older ones returned to in person with n-95s plus 3 doses of vaccine. Unfortunately, omicron hit our home exactly 2 years into it. Strangely enough only 3 of us(all fully vaccinated) were infected. It was over Christmas break and we were all at home together unmasked. My 5 year old even slept with me, literally snuggled right up on me(before I knew I was infected)during my most contagious timeframe and she never was infected. We all got PCR tested because no one had symptoms but my husband. He actually got a couple negative rapid tests as well. I wanted to be 100% sure our rapid tests were true negatives and turned out my 9 yr old and myself were positive. The other children were all negative. We were asymptomatic and my husband had mild allergy type symptoms. I even take immunosuppressive medication and was convinced I’d have at least flu like symptoms had I gotten infected. I credit our easy outcome with being vaccinated. My older children never got infected(that we know of) despite being in public school in TX with high spread during delta and omicron. They were surrounded by infected kids throughout the year. Mask plus vaccinating does in fact work.

We won't be trusting them again.

I'd be on WWIII status - nuclear armageddon - with any relatives if they ever pulled stupid shit like that. I love my family but you absolutely BET I could jettison any relative if they were so cavalier as to be that careless around a kid.

Don't let them forget their arrogance and ignorance. Ever.

33

I am incredibly petty, though, and I have a long memory. My kid will have kids of her own, and I'll still be bringing this shit up.

18

I'm the same way. I'd probably play the long game and basically never let it go.

90

u/JennJayBee Team Moderna Jun 07 '22

Oh, we won't be forgetting. And should they ask why we're not doing anything with them anymore that requires the removal of a mask, we're going to enthusiastically remind them.

Thank Pfizer, she didn't have a serious case. And thank Moderna, it didn't spread any further than that.

[deleted]

49

u/JennJayBee Team Moderna Jun 07 '22

I don't think we could do that. For one thing, we live in Alabama, which means that I'm way more likely to encounter a fuck ton of other people who are just as careless just by going out in public.

We're not going to imprison ourselves in our home, and we've accepted that there's risk involved in going out. We simply mitigate that as much as we can. We don't dine in indoors. We try to keep to outdoors as much as possible, and we wear KF94 or better masks (and wear them properly) when we are indoors. We might even mask outdoors if it's crowded enough, we don't get in people's faces without a mask if we can avoid it, and we have always been good about washing hands.

That said, those particular family members have now been downgraded to being treated like we would any other public interaction, because if we're not looking out for our own health, they sure as fuck won't be.

Regardless of if we ever get to the point where covid's just a bad memory, I'm never going into a pharmacy, doctor's office, nursing home, or hospital without a mask on again. It's honestly ridiculous that it wasn't the standard for people visiting those places before now. I'm as guilty as anyone is but live and learn. My household got 3x vaxxed.
Took the handwashing, 6' distancing, and mask wearing super seriously. Then all restrictions ended and we stopped wearing masks everywhere. Just wore them to stores and office meets. Got Covid. None of us died. I didn't know I had it, the rest were sick like a bad flu I don’t thank God, I thank the vaccines.

31

u/Roadgoddess Jun 07 '22

I’m very similar to you, 3X VAX, I ended up catching it in February and was sick for about a week and then had a cough the last it off anon for about three weeks. My housemate who’s half my age caught it and she still sick over a month later. And she’s had 3X vac as well.

Just shows you you don’t know how you’re going to respond or how it’s going to affect you, we both think thank heavens we were vaccinated because Imagine Health sick she would’ve been without it.

I like the fact that he excepted the challenge of dying before he get vaccinated! Covid one, idiot zero

19

u/steelhips Jun 07 '22

What I find incredibly bizarre about covid is: I'm immunosuppressed due to autoimmune and I'm also my Mum's live in carer. I do as much as I can. Help her dress, some cleaning, cook all her meals, drive her everywhere. She's 86. We're both triple vaxed.

I finally get it. Headache for two days, nasty cough for a week - thank you science! We tested Mum everyday - she didn't get it. How? And it's not uncommon. Four out of five family members all test positive - one doesn't get it at all. I'm not talking about asymptomatic but those who just don't catch it at all. That fascinates me.

Got the first positive test 10 days ago and we all went through it. For one person it was like a mild cold, another a bad cold and for two of us it was like the flu.

Indoctrinating kids into a cult when they're too young to know any better.

It's literally the only reliable way to create more religious people.

If religions had to wait until people were 18, the conversion rate would be nearly 0%.

19

u/WonderWmn212 Jun 07 '22

I was raised in a Lutheran home with parents who were extremely involved with our church. My parents made the mistake of transferring me from my parochial school to a college prep school in 8th grade. My mom wanted me to get "confirmed" with my former school mates (usually a two-year process for non-students) so I went through an accelerated confirmation program. Literally as I was being confirmed, I realized the whole thing was bunk -- and then we had a big party.

I'm the only atheist in my family. My two sisters and brother went all the way through parochial high school and never questioned their faith. I actually enjoyed our religion classes in my new school because - not surprisingly - my parochial school never discussed other religions and my faith-based education left lots of gaps. In fact, I only learned about the Holocaust by reading Judy Blume (Are You There God It's Me Margaret).

I've known them for decades and had many interesting conversations with them, but last week they were both telling me they refuse to use their mobile phones while charging because the "electromagnetic rays the USB cable emits can poison you" yet they both refuse to wear sunscreen because "sunscreen gives you cancer and stops you receiving the full health effects from perfectly natural sunlight." Both of them have family members who died young from melanoma. Australia has the highest skin cancer death rate in the world, but they're telling me that skin cancer is not a disease, it's just an outward sign that your body needs to remove toxins.

My friend had a headache and felt nauseous during a four hour bushwalk in the hot sun but refused to drink any water because she drank 1.5 litres of fruit juice in the morning, which was her daily "meal". She did a "water diet" two weeks beforehand where she only drank water with no food, so she didn't want to drink water during the bushwalk because she was worried she'd overdose on water, as too much water can dilute your electrolytes.

She had a blood test this week because she was concerned about her regular headaches, and of course discovered deficiencies in iron, calcium, vitamin D, other stuff. But she thinks herbs can magically cure those deficiencies, instead of eating stuff that contains those compounds.

Both of them are great friends and I love their company, so it's hard watching them try to commit suicide. Any scientific studies I mention are brushed off as conspiracy theories to make big pharma rich, which isn't really even a thing in Australia where healthcare is mostly free. I just don't know what to do.

I have seen many unhinged rants on here, but this one had to be near the top of the pile.

The World Bank... In 1871?

QAnon is just warmed up leftover Blood Libel from the middle ages and the "Protocols of Zion" repackaged for modern era rubes. And these irrational beliefs get these people to do crazy things. Some have literally murdered because of it. Others have pissed away their entire family's life savings for it. Honestly people who believe in it should be put in involuntary commitment for their own safety and that of others, or at the very least under conservatorship so they cannot donate their house to pay for Trump's next prophesized return to power.

What’s the obsession with Air Force One? He does realize that’s not a plane, but callsign, right? Joe Biden could be sitting in a two-seat Cessna and it would be called Air Force One…

Then again, given all that this guy didn’t know, it would be a surprise if he knew that.

23

u/QuarantineTitans Jun 07 '22

It would indeed be quite surprising since, uh, I um...I didn't know that either.

You lied to me, President Harrison Ford!

36

u/Professional_Low_646 Jun 07 '22

It‘s really simple actually - any aircraft the President is on is „[Service Branch] One“. The big helicopter that lands on the WH lawn is operated by the Marine Corps, so whenever POTUS gets on board, it‘s „Marine One“. The plane in which George W. Bush was flown to his idiotic „mission accomplished“ briefing on a carrier was „Navy One“. When JFK was assassinated, Johnson took the oath of office on board the aircraft. So they took off with a generic Air Force callsign and landed as Air Force One.

Ok, I might have to correct my earlier statement: the Cessna would only be Air Force One if it actually was an Air Force aircraft 😉

I had a discussion with a family member about injecting RFID chips with the vaccine. He said "They chip animals the exact same way. Why is it so far fetched that they are doing that with the vaccine?"

I responded "You've seen the size of the needles they use to chip your dog, right? They're HUGE. And, they also match serial numbers from the needle to paperwork and enter them on a computer to ensure your pet's info is attached to that specific chip. With that in mind, have you seen the vaccine needles? They are tiny. Does the tech match any serial numbers with your info, or do they just grab a preloaded needle out of a bin of 20 or 30, jab you, throw it away and you leave..."

"Well, it doesn't mean it's not possible."

Dumbasses.

40

u/Haskap_2010 ✨ A twinkle in a Chinese bat's eye ✨ Jun 07 '22

They also don't take into account the fact that a vet tech has to try really hard to read a chip, holding the scanner almost on the skin and making several passes before finding it. If it were possible to read them remotely, don't they think that wildlife biologists would be eager to replace clunky radio collars with chips?

18

u/justaguy394 Jun 07 '22

I have a BIL that used to tell me about these chips way before Covid. He claimed to have friends that went out-of-country to get their kids chipped, and that they then had real time satellite based positioning info on them. The equivalent of Find My but 10 years ago and without cell phones. I told him that was impossible, you’d need a battery source in the body to broadcast that to satellites or cell towers… like have you seen a cell or sat phone?!?! Big batteries, big antennas, etc. it was absurd. I don’t think I changed his mind. Would love to know if that friend was pulling his leg or was really a friend-of-a-friend and he heard it all 2nd hand and was confused or what.

16

u/Fabulous-Mud-9114 Team Moderna Jun 07 '22

Exactly. This is why I say religion is a symptom AND a cause of bad epistemology.

I dunno how to say it, but I've seen Texas school board leaders shove (or at least try to shove) Biblical literalism, American exceptionalism, and white supremacy into our textbooks over a decade ago. This is a concerted effort across many levels of society to make people believe untruths in order to influence their behaviors.

It's like that one politician lady's campaign van that went viral on Facebook - "guns, Jesus, and babies!" That is deliberately meant to reach far-right evangelicals brainwashed into anti-abortion and pro-gun views. That type of thinking is ubiquitous throughout the South and it's EXTREMELY hard to counter without getting anyone who isn't a Bahbull-bleevin Christian into office.

Considering the notable absence of a smug "I had corona and it was no big deal just like the flu" post, it makes me think he was sick that entire period and he might've needed to go back because of his damaged lungs.

This will be the most documented Case in Epidemiologies history, where people actively decided to die due to misinformation.

Which will be very useful for multiple sciences, but will also be the most tragic case of its kind.

Every single death, resulting from Q-Nut misinformation could’ve been avoided, if “critical thinking” wasn’t so out of style nowadays.

It is absolutely tragic, and everyone still spewing Covid-Misinformation is, in my book, willing to endanger and indirectly kill people.

The most disturbing thing for me is, that there is no immediate solution to this problem, because people are deciding for themselves to ignore the risks of dying a horrible and painful death.

As do smokers (which I am one of) but my demise is clear to me. I don’t try to convince others, that “Big health” is just lying to us that we can get cancer from smoking, or that the Guberment is trying to control us with anti smoking campaigns. I am sure, that I will die from Smoking related diseases. And I am fine with that. I will never try to convince others to start smoking, I will never actively expose others to my smoke if I can avoid it.

It saddens me to see people who, in all sincerity, may have been rational thinking, smart, and all in all good folks, die because they were misled by sycophants and grifters in a Moment where an elaborate explanation made more sense to them than the logical one.

Every single death due to this disease was one too many. Every single death because of Q-nuts, is a disgrace.

And everyone still pandering conspiratorial bullshit about this disease should be ashamed and shunned from society for ever.
