I love the "80000 people died of the flu last year" one.

Muthafuka - a MILLION people died from Covid in two years with social distancing, masks, immunisation, closing homes/businesses and restricting travel.

Going by percentages: if there had been no immunisation, social distancing, etc, we would have had over THREE million deaths.

What bullshit.

u/3-legit-2-quit Jun 09 '22

This. My god. How does that connection not get made for them.

There is no critical thinking going on. They are just arguing whatever talking points make their case.

First it was there are no us cases, then only some, then it will be gone by spring, then only in cities, then mask don't do anything, then the vaccine isn't FDA approved it's experimental, then once it was approved it was rushed and not safe, and so on so on. Never mind all the stuff about hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, Vitamin C...or whatever. They've gone full blown "it's a plan-demic."

There is nothing you can show them, tell them, or prove to them that covid is dangerous.

39

u/Ysadey Jun 09 '22

If none of those other arguments work, they fall back on the CDC and hospitals/medical staff manipulating the numbers of Covid deaths. Some places were attributing too many deaths to Covid and others weren't attributing enough, often due to mandates from right-wing politicians trying to "own the libs" or preserve "freedom". There were also "concerns" about the timing of reports of Covid deaths, often because deaths would be reported, then updated when cause of death was determined.

u/jasapper Jun 09 '22

I showed my doctor what this guy said his doctor told him. My doctor furrowed his brow and said "no, his doctor did not tell him that". He might have been grinning too but he was wearing a mask so I couldn't tell.

24

On a tangent to your comment. It’s often quoted that 30% of the population believes the presidential election was stolen. They get this statistic from “polls”. I call bullsh$t on this. (The polls). There might be a few (maybe 5% of Trump supporters) who in their hearts really believe this lie. The rest (25%), know that Biden won, but are just pissed that all those POC, who votes shouldn’t be allowed to count, had the audacity to give it to someone so undeserving. So when these R voters are polled they just lie, because they’re pissed.

After Uvalde, there was a comment that received a couple thousand upvotes that went something like "Losing children to guns is just the price of our freedoms". People really are onboard with this stuff--lives don't matter, only their immediate feelings do.

Late April 2022: Got COVID again, hospitalized in May, and dead by May 20th 2022.

Could have gotten a vaccine in between, and almost definitely been alive and well today.

If I get it I can only hope it’s as mild as yours was. So, so glad you had a super mild case and suffered no lasting effects, friend.

A little under 300k Americans died in WW II, so that tiny litle virus is outdoing "certain death" more than 3 fold so far. Of course, more Americans are exposed to COVID than Normandy, but the law of volume has always been everyone's concern with COVID.

Once again, comparing unlike things.

In war, you prepare, wear protective equipment, carry a weapon and use weapons to protect yourself and to neutralize the enemy, who is generally visible.

With Covid, the enemy is invisible and can't be defeated with attacks. Running into Covid isn't bravery, it's stupidity. The closest thing we have to running into Covid to save lives is in our hospitals, where healthcare workers put themselves at risk, and antivaxxers have made the HCW's the enemy.

But he bravely fought Covid, anyway, and didn't save any lives in so doing.

The meme is trying the British English spelling 'paedophile' and getting it wrong. Even the lowest-slung minds in the UK can spell 'paedo' (because they scrawl it on the cars of paediatricians... it's another level of stupid but even they can put the first few letters of both words in the right order). And no one in the US would spell it anything other than 'pedophile'.

So, congratulations, stiffed-up Texan ex-cop... if this doesn't scream 'Russian Bot Shop' nothing does. За тебя!

What I find interesting was that, before accusing everybody of being pedos was their new accusation du jour, I remember an article from some fundie tradwife who was making the argument that waiting until the current legal age was un-Christian and they should be getting married even younger. They'll flip on any of their beliefs as soon as it's convenient to do so.

80,000 Americans did not die from the flu in 2019. 40k would have been a startlingly bad year, making headlines. COVID averaged that number per month for two years running, despite the vaccines saving over two million lives. Let that sink in.

That first slide really gets to me, these people don’t understand germ theory at all. The Black Plague killed a third of the European population in the Middle Ages, influenza killed 50 million people worldwide in 1918, and the diseases introduced to Native Americans by the settlers wiped out in some cases 90% of their tribe members. Germs are way more dangerous than any wars to us, we should be scared of them for fuck sake. Of course, these people probably thing we can shoot our way out of a pandemic.

Evangelists seem to need a group of people to hate. I can remember before they glommed on to "the gays", they tried to make humanists their bogeyman. It didn't get a lot of traction. Someone figured out that you have to invent a threat to children in order to really push the rage button, so gays converting your kids supplanted humanists. But there's probably some lingering taint to "humanist" (it just means atheist, to them).

4th slide. Such lies. 80,000 flu deaths - bullshit. More like 20,000. Don’t these people realise they’re telling lies?

That’s without even talking about the stupidity. Now the pandemic killed >1.4M Americans (that’s how many excess deaths there were), even if 80,000 was correct, it would still be an incredibly ignorant and dumb thing to say.

Edit: the whole story reads like bullshit anyway. These covid denier stories always read like they’re made up.
