The wrong Ian Watson

The man with the black rimmed glasses who is pictured on the meme is not the Ian Watson who made the quote. The man pictured is a different Ian Watson who is a college professor in New Jersey.

https://sasn.rutgers.edu/about-us/faculty-staff/ian-watson

The quote in question came from a post on Facebook dated July 14, 2021 made by an individual based in the UK selling homeopathic cures and "natural healing" courses.

The chucklefuck who put together the meme didn't even make sure to put the correct picture on it.

The quote itself masquerades as a piece of profound knowledge but falls apart with even the tiniest bit of scrutiny. By using misleading and loaded terms it tries to frame the issue as one where those opposed to vaccines are victims of some great oppression.

Think of how many public health measures initially received various levels of backlash when they were introduced: washing hands after using the restroom, wearing seat belts in cars, wearing helmets on motor bikes, bans on smoking indoors, workplace safety measures,... When public health and people's lives are at stake and an attitude shift is necessary then persuading, and incentivizing, and even shaming are necessary. It's why there are no more ashtrays in restaurants.

And what a coincidence that an alternative medicine peddler would have something negative to say about medicine that's actually been demonstrated to work. I'm sure he's not making money of selling his totally not ineffective alternative treatments. No conflict of interest there.

Public health is often about risk / benefit. Bottom line is, does it save lives? Does the requirement to wear a seat belt infringe upon your right to turn into a human projectile when you crash your car into another head on? Yes it does. I guess you'll just have to live with that.

107

u/justatest90 Jul 19 '22

Well my immediate reaction when I saw the quote was, "Isn't this just saying banning abortion is not in your best interest?" None of those things were done with vaccinations, it's all being done with abortion.

Because of course the fuckhead who put the shit together didn't even bother to do their resear---oh, wait.

It doesn't matter. The brain dead morons who consume these lies never bother to check the source for accuracy anyway. The MEME creator probably knew that, so they saw no need to actually make the effort to put up a correct photo of the actual guy they were quoting.

Kind of underlines the level of STUPID we are dealing with here.

It’s a shame really.

COVID-19 took people with comorbidities initially anyway. We just didn’t see the initial pattern

  • Overweight
  • Elderly
  • Smokers

All have lung issues.

The other fascinating thing - COVID-19 killed people because of:

  • Arrogance
  • Ignorance
  • Gluttony
  • Stupidity
  • Selfishness

All are learned behaviors

A substantial amount damage done from COVID-19 was completely self-inflicted.

  • If you decided your ears, nose, throat, and lungs (breathing) were not important to you for x years, then it used that weakness.

  • If Facebook was more important to you than your health, then it went after your foolishness.

The real question is how this affects the 2024 election. COVID killed a lot of Republican voters and continues to do so.

Oof that text message exchange is horrific

106

u/PackageintheMaleBox Team Pfizer Jul 19 '22

On a side note, this is why I hate euphemism around death. This poor person thought their sibling was missing because it was too hard for someone to lead with "she's dead". I mean, it's already a really weird thing to text to begin with.

My dad was on his death bed, we all knew he was going to die. And yet when he did and I called my husband to give him the terrible news I didn't use some stupid fucking euphemism to add more confusion. I just broke down crying and said he died.

I can't imagine the extra confusion this person had to go through by thinking their sick sibling was missing minutes before learning they're dead. It's like a one-two punch.

50

u/the_cool_zone Jul 19 '22

4

u/AffectionateOil2469 Jul 20 '22

I hate the expression "passed" and never use it. A staff member died suddenly at a school where I taught and the guidance counselor came in to explain it to the 1st graders. "Mr. Brian is no longer with us...he's gone away..." What?" from bewildered 6 year olds. "Where'd he go?" "He's moved on...he's passed" Finally one little kid hollered "He DIED! like my grandpa!"

"I covet your prayers"

Is this phrasing another one of those "learned from Russian meme" things?

46

u/ScopeCreepStudio Jul 19 '22

Nope, strange as it is this one is pretty standard Christian phraseology. Source: been there

24

u/justatest90 Jul 19 '22

This is correct. Paul uses the phrase, in the King James translation, "But covet earnestly the best gifts" when talking about "gifts of the spirit." In this context it means "desire earnestly," but that language has seeped into evangelicalism.

8

u/ScopeCreepStudio Jul 19 '22

Thanks for this, I knew it came from the scripture somewhere but I couldn't remember what exactly

18

u/frx919 💉 Clots & Tears 💦 Jul 19 '22

I see.
I looked it up out of curiosity, and apparently there are debates on the topic.

In modern usage, the term covet is almost exclusively used to mean “to desire wrongfully.” But in many of the older translations of the Bible, such as the King James Version (1611), the word was used in both a positive and a negative sense. Like the NIV and ESV, the KJV uses the term “covet” in the negative sense, such as in Exodus 20. But the KJV also uses the term positively, such as in 1 Corinthians 12:31, when Paul admonishes us to “covet earnestly the best [spiritual] gifts.” Newer versions translate that phrase as “eagerly desire” (NIV) or “earnestly desire” (ESV) rather than “covet earnestly.”

When Christians say they “covet your prayers” they simply mean they earnestly desire that you pray for them.

5

u/A-man-of-mystery Covidious Albion Jul 19 '22

That explains our confusion! Once you strip out the wrongfully part of the modern meaning it makes perfect sense.

21

u/5CatsNoWaiting Jul 19 '22

It's a phrase my Evangelical family started using in the early 1990's. Wasn't part of their vocabulary in the 1970's & 80's. (Source: 3 or more services a week, have perfect attendance pin to prove it)

6

u/RoguePlanet1 Jul 19 '22

18

u/5CatsNoWaiting Jul 19 '22

Tl;dr: their insistence on rote memorization of large amounts of text + insistence on the infallibility of scripture + insistence that the strayest thought or doubt will send you to hell + obvious inconsistencies in Jesus's genealogy = "something that doesn't add up."

6

u/RoguePlanet1 Jul 19 '22

Thanks! I'm always interested in learning how people escape the family influence.

3

u/tigoka Jul 19 '22

Do they literally give out pins or is that a joke? (I was lucky enough not to have to go to a church.)

5

u/5CatsNoWaiting Jul 19 '22

Absolutely no joke. There were generally better prizes than that (stuffed animals, church-y games or books, food treats) but I accidentally kept the perfect attendance pin. I think it's still kicking around in my dresser drawer someplace.

I did not keep my Bible Quiz League Champion trophies, of which there were many.

7

u/tigoka Jul 19 '22

I'm picturing all the quiz champions turning into atheists.

9

u/5CatsNoWaiting Jul 19 '22

Very close to correct.

If you weren't raised in this environment, you probably won't think I'm serious about the huge emphasis they placed on textual inerrancy. There were no mistakes or inconsistencies anywhere in the Bible, period, end of story.

When you make very bright teenagers memorize a bunch of inconsistent prose, and then tell them there are no inconsistencies in that prose, and that if there WERE inconsistencies it would mean the entire underpinnings of life and civilization and morality were invalid... the cognitive dissonance gets pretty swirly.

5

u/Fiz_Giggity Team Bivalent Booster Jul 20 '22

Oh, that's right. Because that doesn't happen.

Nor Ian Watson the Theatre Arts professor in NJ, who's picture is used in the meme.

Edit: I see you posted that above. Here is the Ian Watson who made the statement. At least they didn't use a picture of Ian Watkins.

I can only imagine every single one of these people smoking cigarettes and holding a 40oz while driving without a seatbelt. Being incentivized and “cajoled” in to not doing these things must mean it’s not in your best interest.

It boils down to "If you don't already believe something, it isn't true" which is just rationalizing confirmation bias and encouraging willful ignorance in the face of reality biting them in the ass.

This is why they die preventable deaths due to their own stupid negligence, and this is also why they never learn from mistakes.

That last death announcement is really fucking weird, it literally doesn't mention death in any capacity outside of "walking with Jesus". Meanwhile it says he was "HEALED" twice.

10

u/Hilarious_Haplogroup Jul 19 '22

Did it ever occurred to the Anti-vaxxers...

...that it should only have taken a modest amount of persuasion and reminders for a rational person to conclude that taking the Covid-19 mRNA vaccines was the smart thing to do by March of 2021 or later, given that by that point millions of elderly people as well as medical workers, survived and did just fine after their vaccinations?

Of course not.

4

u/Fruits_of_Zellman Jul 20 '22

Because people like John Stockton said he had a list of names of "hundreds of athletes that have dropped dead on the field " after having been vaccinated. This was actually repeated by SENATOR Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.

5

u/Hilarious_Haplogroup Jul 20 '22

Their lizard brains look at claims like that on Facebook, it confirms the biases that they already have, and they share it to all their other dumb Facebook friends. (Their friends and family that aren't that dumb already blocked their notifications from their newsfeed ages ago.)

Evidence for claims? It doesn't matter to them, as long as it says what they already believe.

2

u/Fruits_of_Zellman Jul 20 '22

Tbf, if one of my senators (Durbin and Duckworth) said that vaccines were dangerous, I would believe them. Johnson should be charged with contributing to the deaths of these people.

9

u/MiSosio Jul 19 '22

What bothers me the most about this is their lack of understanding/reasoning after the fact. It's almost as if they believe it was just bad luck and are asking for prayers? What are the prayers for?

If I was lied to or mislead, and my loved one died because of that lie, my effort would go towards warning others from going down the same path.

These people are taking literal L's and asking for prayers for what? To help cope? To help the person go to heaven?

“Calling on all my prayer warriors” 🙄🙄🙄seems to guarantee things only getting worse. Well, worse for the patient who was too fucking dumb and stubborn to get vaxxed.

Also one of them said they “passed away peacefully and unexpectedly.” Let’s see, they didn’t get a free vaccine that could have kept them out of the hospital if they got Covid, they got Covid, the medical personnel in the hospital told them the truth about the person’s chances of recovery, and they dared to use the word “unexpectedly”. “Peacefully and unexpectedly” would be dying of a heart attack in your sleep. Not… this.

My dad already had copd and emphysema before he got covid. Thankfully he listened and got the vaccine. His lung doctor is constantly in the covid unit where I'm at and every one of the people dying from covid in there are un-vaccinated. I could honestly cry over the fact that my dad is reasonable enough to get the vaccine especially since most of his family is very anti vaxx. He's had covid 2 times now the first time was pretty bad but this last time he recovered really quick. I'm about the only person in my family that hasn't caught it yet even while taking care of other family memebers who have caught it. I'll attribute it to me using a fresh mask and gloves around them along with wearing a long sleeve zip up hoodie and washing my hands and arms after helping them. Gonna go get my booster next week since I've seen how bad it can get like my grandma who caught it before they had the vaccine out and was lucky to survive it. Her brother had the opportunity to get the vaccine but god forbid it was "taking away his freedom." Pretty sure the ventilator took more of his freedom away since he wasn't going to be coming off of it so he just had him turn it off. Now he get's to be worm food. I'd feel sorry for him if he didn't spread so much misinformation with his posts. Blood is blood but doesn't mean you have to miss them when they are gone
