"Can't stop a virus from spreading" is easy to say when you're actively working against it and then claim it doesn't work.

They did the same thing with lockdowns. And masking. And vaccination.
With people like this as your neighbor, who needs enemies?

"With people like this as your neighbor, who needs enemies?"

This is why I don't understand why people complained about quarantine. A two month vacation from almost everyone on earth was my idea of paradise.

27

u/leni710 Aug 06 '22

Same! I'm trying hard to figure out an ethical way to make that vacation happen again. I guess mass extinction could be useful. I'm just workshopping things. Nothing in stone.

Quarentine was absolute hell for me. I'd moved back to San Francisco in Dec 19 to pursue an EMT course at their community College, as I would get tuition covered and a $1700 stipend, as opposed to the $1400 I'd have to pay for other courses with no stipend. I bought a mini van to live in for $750 and the thought was to save money and get a real place when I became trained and registered. I had gyms to shower at, restaurants to eat at, libraries to study at, in person classes and a job selling hot dogs in Union Square. Quarentine left me alone without any resources and no way to make money. I was just stuck in a van by myself, no real access to electricity to continue my classes. My van broke down in April and I had to walk 3 miles each way everyday to a business complex I once discovered had live outlets outside. 2020 ruined my life and destroyed my mind and body. I was so malnutrished and dirty, I spent four days in the hospital with a central line. Quarentine was much more than just not seeing folks for a lot of people.

5

u/Ragingredblue 🐎Praise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!🐆 Aug 06 '22

I'm sorry you went through all of that. I hope things have gotten better for you since then.

9

u/Alti0raPet0 Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 06 '22

Much much better, thank you. But there are definitely more than a few things left to fix. 2019 and 2020 were both extremely traumatizing and stressful years for me, but so far 2022 has been treating me phenomenally. I'm glad your quarentine was nothing like mine.

Edit: I would like to say that making it through that year solidified for me that I am a very motivated and dedicated person. I'm now hoping to go to medical school, and while I know it won't be easy, there's just no way it will be the hardest thing I've been through. There's a lot of power in that, and I don't think I could have been as convinced without that hellish torturous experience.

Hell can sometimes be a personal prison, having nothing to do with politics or national economics….

3

u/WhichEmojiForThis Aug 07 '22

I know this sounds simplistic but a lot of people sought out family that they normally would not be with (what with everyone busy with their own lives), and went through quarantine together. There was no door anywhere in the country open to you?

3

u/Alti0raPet0 Aug 08 '22

Eventually, yes, my family did help me get back home to Louisiana. However I kind of got stuck out west. Due to the circumstances, the whole class was going to finish with an incomplete. So I figured, as stressed as I was, I would ask to take the final at a later date. But then I couldn't get back on campus to take it for months after the semester ended. I'd already worked that hard, and sacrificed so much. I was not leaving without that certification.

The right-wing U.S. government has a vested interest in you not knowing that a man widely considered the smartest man to ever live was a Marxist. Or that MLK ever said anything like this:"I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic."

And now they've "whitewashed"(more like fully fabricating a false image of these men) them to the point right wingers claim them. Incredible.

I've also seen "global warming is good" gaining some traction too.

15

u/ur_sine_nomine Team Mix & Match Aug 06 '22

Back in the day, when I was involved with meteorology, I was at a conference where a Russian presenter was making a fool of himself, noting that “global warming is good” because there would be “beach holidays in Siberia” and similar.

The Russian delegation was taken aside behind the scenes and told, quietly, to get rid of him and replace him with someone who was taking the subject seriously, like everyone else attending the conference. (Surprisingly, they did).

This all happened when the amplifying effect of methane releases when … Siberian permafrost melts was undiscovered.

"CARBON DIOXIDE IS PLANT FOOD."

"Yeah that's great so if somebody falls into a grain silo they should just eat their way out?"

4

u/dsrmpt Aug 06 '22

I said global warming was good in high school debate, but that was because high school debate requires you to be able to defend the indefensible.

I also said that a good economy is bad, because when the economy is strong, people eat more beef, and more beef consumption means more cows, and more cows means more cows farting, and more farts means more methane, and more methane means more global warming, and more global warming triggers increased geopolitical instability, increased climate refugees, increased water wars, and that those conflicts will trigger a nuclear war which will destroy all humans. Pretty tenuous to say that a good economy creates nuclear Holocaust, but, ya know... My favorite response I heard to that argument though was that nuclear holocaust isn't that bad. High School debate for ya.

But this was arguing in a sandbox, not real life. We argued a position, we didn't believe everything we said, unlike some people.

There's a great documentary series on BBC called 'big oil vs the world' that documents (with a surfeit of evidence) the oil lobby (and particularly Exxon) veering from one form of fud to another while they successfully prevented any meaningful change over the last 30 years. The 30 years since their own in-house scientists showed them that anthropogenic climate change was undeniably true and absolutely catastrophic.

The ones you specified were all part of their absolutely deliberate playbook to protect their profits.

4

u/maxreddit Aug 06 '22

Sometimes I wounder if they have some of that "damn youngsters" thinking. "Back in my day, we all got vaccines just to protect ourselves from sickness and death, and we liked it! Now, all these kids want prizes and money for doing the basics to protect themselves?! Damn Kids!" But, this somehow transforms to the vaccine itself being bad, and the whole idea breaks down in my head.

3

u/dsrmpt Aug 06 '22

The answer is propaganda. Conservatism works with what you said, "you damn kids", and that's what most people would go with unprompted, but propaganda from Russia and Fox and OAN twists it to better suit their goals.

The goal is to transform the narrative from "government bad" to "institutions are untrustworthy". That way, the institutions of education, science, government, elections, all of them are undermined, and Fox becomes the only source of truth and trust, and Russia sees America tear itself apart with Jan 6th among others.

As far as I'm concerned, they don't deserve hospital resources, never mind sympathy from all the other people they have mocked and dismissed for nearly 3 years now.

Fuck all of them.

11

u/maxreddit Aug 06 '22

These people smugly claimed that the vaccine was going to kill people and loudly celebrated their supposed pre-deaths. That's a big reason why that the people who tell me to have empathy or not give some sort of acerbic comment on their deaths will never get me to take them seriously.

That was before the far right government in NSW:

A. Seeded the entirety of Oceania with Delta, due to it's corruption and ineptitude; and

B. The new Premier (a christian fundamentalist who took over after the pervious one was forced to resign) decided againat ALL medical advice to just let it rip in mid December. Just when Omicron hit (and no one was triple vaxxed).

Now, Australia has one of (and at times the highest) infection and death rates in the developed world.

We elected a Labor Prime minister on the federal level.

The premier of NSW is equivalent to a state governor in America- except that they also happen to be the leader of the lower house of the state's legislature.

Not hard to get mixed up, because the former Prime Minister was also a fundamentalist (Pentacostal variety) from NSW and the same corrupt and inept networks.

Recently there was somebody who confidently described Black Lives Matter as something supported by the white elite Democrats of Washington but not actual, real-life Black people and I politely told him he needed to do some legitimate research because he was embarrassing himself.

One thing that I think has been lowballed is how disconnected some segments of the population are from reality. And not just at this end of the spectrum. There was an article in the big regional paper recently about a pretty serious problem (older residents living in housing desperately needed by younger residents, one person in a four-bedroom kinda stuff) that got a few paragraphs in before an interview subject admitted they wanted to make a profit off selling their house and not just move laterally.

Leaving aside what a dick move this is overall, that this person literally doesn't understand that they are contributing to the housing shortage in the first place with their hoarding was just enraging.

8

u/maxreddit Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 07 '22

The "Black Lives Matter is really run by white people" also shows their racism, as well as their disconnection from reality. It pretty heavily implies that black people cannot form or run a political movement, and it can only be white people who can try to change things.

You missed one. In 4, the town is called Medicine Hat. Seriously. Medicine Hat. Someone is the mayor of Medicine Hat.

I'm sorry to the daughter in the second slide, but some people do deserve covid. Those that tempt it daily with their Facebook memes and their "research" from the most obscure websites I've ever heard of, absolutely deserve covid and all the pain that comes with it.

Who has ever made that argument? Higher taxes to lower temperature? What the fuck are they even talking about?

3

u/ganonpig HCA Historian Aug 06 '22

I guess that's their "taxes are bad" old chestnut. That evergreen will never go out of style. They have to throw that in.

" His COPD couldn't handle the Virus"

Nope, this stupid FuckKunckle, with a history of smoking, wouldn't get vaccinated against a global respiratory virus to avoid his preventable death and the use of heroic health care resources used to futilely try and save his ignorant ass....the bill for which will likely get picked up by the U.S. taxpayer now.

Actions have consequences, Inactions has consequences, but we are stuck with Freedum Fuckwit's bill.

So Numb by all of this.....

Well first thing is that the goal isn’t to change the Earth’s temperature, but to KEEP IT FROM CHANGING MORE.

How many - two? - of these grieving people who know exactly what covid can do urged their loved ones to get vaccinated? It's so discouraging.

if you pay more taxes

There's the real sin of the right wing grifters:

Carbon taxes aren't paid by individuals, but by the companies doing the polluting. It's basically a way of saying "look, if you make a mess, you can pay us to clean it up for you."

But conservatives and their corporate overlords have spent a lot of capital convincing Johnny Beergut that carbon taxes are a tax on him.
