This is actually true. During the Bush years a political scientist did research on the wildly popular tax cuts that only benefited the wealthy. His paper explaining the behavior is called Homer Gets A Tax Cut: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/homer-gets-a-tax-cut-inequality-and-public-policy-in-the-american-mind/E57F206B695C64CAF743305E7082AEDC/share/01aa6afb5c4869e59860c6c729ead85e74f12809

This is the line we usually hear, but imo it's more perverse than that. They consider themselves too principled to loot the wealthy for their own gain and would rather simply stay poor.

You posted the score from the middle of the 1st inning.

79

I had to Google to see if his number of H1N1 infections were correct...they were, yet only 12k people died compared to Covid 19 killing 1 million people.

We also didn't blame Trump for the virus as much as his misinformation and hideous response to it. He said it would be gone by April, couldn't be caught outside, wouldn't survive in cold, can't infect kids, could be blasted away by light. Vaccine passports (usually called "green pass" in the EU) have been enacted in several European countries and were used until a few months ago: they helped in containing the epidemic and convinced some no-vax to finally get their shots. And no, most of us didn't feel any less free: as long you're a sane individual, you won't complain about having to scan an anonymised barcode. Personally speaking, I'd be in favour of keeping them for a bit more, at least for the most crowded events (such as concerts and discos).

32

u/lionguardant Sep 01 '22

The European idea of freedom and the American idea of freedom are not the same. America is really focussed on individual liberty, and is kind of based on a very self centred view of the world. Europe is slightly more nuanced, and there’s more of a community aspect.

15

u/ExplainItToMeLikeImA Sep 01 '22

To me, Europeans seem to better understand the fact that there is no personal freedom without interpersonal responsibility. If we all only act with only ourselves in mind, and have no power to compel others to act reasonably or ethically, then our personal freedoms will constantly be impinged by others.

My own grandparents lived in a rural area in America and constantly complained about regulations. The ultimate evil! When the water and cable company tried to take advantage of them, they complained about that, too. When builders up the hill filled their stream and pond with silt they felt so sorry for themselves!

They refused to see that this is the natural consequence of a lack of proper, well-planned regulation.

They were brain washed into caring more about being members of Team Republican than they did about their health, happiness or personal rights.

Slide 11 is a doozy. What a way to treat your daughter, what a way to be treated by your father and laugh about it later. It's treated like these were all jokes but there's a distinct unpleasant flavor running through those things.

Promise to walk your daughter down the aisle at her wedding and then imply she's waiting too long to get married.

Take your daughter fishing but then complain that she's better at it and stop taking her fishing.

Literally throw your daughter into the deep end of the pool to teach her to swim.

Yeah that’s a crappy thing to do. As a kid my mom took me to the ymca to learn to swim. Being a stupid kid I asked the lifeguard what he was doing (I was benched with my shoes and a towel on drying off) and he said “this!” and threw me into the deep end, towel shoes and all. I didn’t drown but I remember full on PANICKING do make my way to the top. I’ll never forget that. I’m still uncomfortable in bodies of water into my 30’s.

Psa: throwing kids into the deep end isn’t funny OR a good way to teach them to swim.

26

u/elvensnowfae 5G syncing in progress… Sep 01 '22 edited Sep 01 '22

Thank you so much for the sympathy. I appreciate that some lifeguards actually care.

I had one other incident at a wave pool when I thought I was over the trauma and got in. Well, a wave took me under and I was actually drowning that time. I was 12-13. A lady grabbed me and held me up and i was scared and starfished the poor woman. There was 2-3 lifeguards on both sides of the pool, none saw me. She said “what do I do with her? She’s not mine”

One dragged me by my arm to a table and I was dizzy and confused and barely able to even walk and they put a pen in my hand so sign a waiver. I didn’t even read it I just signed (probably not to sue). My sister and her husband then found me and got mad I went out too far and ridiculed me in front of the lifeguard and everyone like I was some kind of idiot. I’m embarrassed to this day still.

I also didn’t go in the deep end. Kids are stupid and don’t realize how easily you can and will get pulled under then it’s game over. Wave after wave so I couldn’t get above water.

I won’t go in a wave pool ever again and never have. Thank you for caring about others and saving lives, people drowning is common, easy, and terrifying and I truly appreciate what you do.

Edit- a word

7

u/RattusMcRatface I GET CLOSTERPHOBIA Sep 01 '22

Your experiences sound really crap, as well as extremely counterproductive.

As a kid I taught myself to swim by, firstly, getting a face-mask and getting used to holding my breath and briefly ducking underwater on quiet days at the local pool (full disclosure: I tried it in a bathtub first lol).

This gave me the confidence to swan around underwater while seeing where I was going. Soon realised that swimming on the surface is no big deal after all as your body is naturally buoyant with lungs full of air.

I'm no Olympic swimmer by any means, but I'm not scared of water either.

After that trauma, I had to endure the other kid's jeers.

And, I still am not comfortable in the water.

He's upset about a fictional microchip but probably had no problem carrying his cellphone with him everywhere. Have any of these people seen their dogs get microchipped? That needle is huge! There is no way that tiny vaccine needle is injecting a microchip. I have a loop monitor implanted in my chest and as small as it is, they still needed to make an incision.

Husband:" too much to dictate so she handed me her phone.

I'm a nurse. Was working in an extremely remote part of the US. Every week during the pandemic part 1 we had at least 1 death.

Now, granted there are like 9000 people on the entire county, and we served 4 counties, but that's a lot for a small rural area.

And for a year and a half I was the one that attended to every death. Except one. I was there when the grandmother and grandfather would pass. I was whispering to them to ease their passing. Wiping down their foreheads, praying with them. Every time.

Some of them died so horribly, fighting and resisting, but for the most part they'd slip out of it.

In almost every single case it was the families that infected the elder. The elders were always vaccinated, except one. But the families were absolutely resistant and loud about it.

The families would tell me how they just had groups of people over to tend to their loved one. Didn't see a problem, even if the loved one was sent home to quarantine.

I remember staying in a plastic gown and masks for 12 hour shifts night after night then being forced by law to work during the days as well.

The doctors, none of whom wanted to get within 10 feet of their patients, would send me or another nurse in.

For all this, our local whackadoodles decided to start talking shit on the few nurses we had left on Facebook. How we were exacerbating things. How stupid we were for wearing a mask outside of work, nevermind state mandate. The community did not rise to support us, and neither did the corporate hospital I worked for.

Anyway, the whole thing left me with some ptsd and a therapy bill. I went to travel nursing to get away from it. Found communities where people took things seriously. Gave me hope.

That's part of my covid story. Thanks"

I caught H1N1 because I didn’t think to take any precautions back then.

My immediate family and I have not gotten Covid (I hope I haven’t jinxed us). And cases amongst our friends and family have all been this year when everything has opened up.

6

u/tejaco Grandpa was in Antifa, but they called it the U.S. Army Sep 01 '22

My family posted "Wash Hands" on the door to the house from the garage during H1N1 and we haven't caught a cold or flu since. I kid you not. We just got into the habit of washing our hands when we come in the house.

Not that I'm counting on that to protect us from COVID, but it was startling that no one had a cold or flu for ten years.
