Slide 1: if only Trump supporters, republicans and other anti-mask right-wing nincompoops actually knew George Carlin’s work…

511

u/_ChipWhitley_ Team Mix & Match Sep 06 '22 edited Sep 06 '22

Lmao George was absolutely despised by the right wing. They almost arrested him on stage for cussing.

He was also hired by Kevin Smith to play the role of Cardinal Glick in the movie Dogma as satire because he was hated by them so much. It’s funny to me to see conservatives nowadays try to identify with him. They have obviously not seen his extensive library of stand-up material or read any of his books, or are even vaguely aware of his personal life. I used to be in the forums on his official website where he would post an update here and there, but one of the common themes among us who were there was, “Which conservative did George piss off this week?”

242

u/retroman73 Sep 06 '22

All they need to do is go to YouTube and look up his presentation from 1996 about abortion. Absolutely roasted the conservatives.

133

u/_ChipWhitley_ Team Mix & Match Sep 06 '22 edited Sep 06 '22

Exactly. He roasted everybody but conservatives practically roast themselves and have a grand following but control everything. It’s whenever he made fun of environmentalists, or feminists, or liberals, or people who tried to patrol language, that’s when conservatives try to identify with him and I’m like, no no… don’t take one line out of context. Listen to the entire show. You won’t like what you hear but he will change your perception. His shows from the early 90s are still extremely relevant to today’s news and events.

And that in turn has been bastardized by the right in multiple speeches about how the women fighting for a right to choose wouldn’t get knocked up in the first place. They have no original ideas. They parrot what their handlers tell them to say or steal shit way too clever and over their heads for them to comprehend the source material.

51

u/Estoye Team Moderna Sep 06 '22

I think that was Matt Gaetz who said something like that and tried shaming a pro choice activist's weight, which backfired spectacularly when she used that publicity to raise even more $$$ for pro choice causes.

11

u/digitecca Sep 06 '22

That was very recently. There have been plenty who have used it prior to and after the supreme court’s decision.

I heard a couple Trump humpers at work discussing a new comedian one of them had discovered - Bill Burr. They probably saw a clip of him poking fun at feminism, which admittedly he likes to do. Couldn't help but wonder what they thought if they ever looked into his actual stand-up...

98

u/_ChipWhitley_ Team Mix & Match Sep 06 '22 edited Sep 07 '22

I loved when I found Bill Burr the year after George died because I felt like he was the closest thing comedy-wise despite being so different. They both make fun of everybody and have their great points, but Bill Burr, like George, leans very left. Comedy tends to lean left in the first place because every right wing “comedian” that has tried has failed because they don’t understand punchlines.

When you are mean to minorities and try to cancel their rights it no longer becomes comedy but just a tirade of insults. Dennis Miller was probably the closest in recent memory, but even he was mocked relentlessly for being unintelligible and then became a pundit on Fox News.

76

u/ThatRandomIdiot Sep 06 '22

Bill is directly influenced by George which is why there’s so much of a similarity. Burr even talked how nervous he was to host SNL bc the first ever host was Carlin and he wanted to honor that. Carlin and Burr knew that the best comedy is when you punch up not down.

17

u/mlpedant Sep 06 '22

Cody Johnson put it best: the reason right wing comedy tends to struggle is they don't have any solutions. They have a bunch of people they blame for their problems, but their solutions boil down to "get rid of the [bad person]" and "pErSoNaL rEsPoNSiBiLiTy!1!!". There's no punchline there, it's just calling people bad arbitrarily and saying they should do better without having much else to go on.

39

Right wing comedy is just the same one trans joke over and over.

Part of the conservative mind state and tactics developed to combat reason manifests in a hilarious inability to understand nuance and critically think. That's why they do often use things (music, quotes, people, movies, etc.) as examples to support their world view without actually understanding the initial material.

I still remember someone sending me a research paper on ivermectin use as an example of it's effectiveness only for me to just skip to the conclusion and copy and paste how they outright stated it had no positive impact on treatment and may actually be detrimental. It's exhausting and quite honestly, terrifying. Millions being indoctrinated into nonsensical ways of thinking bordering on mental illness.

You wanna make a political song catchy so the people who need to hear it actually do, but no one actually listens to the lyrics. They're just gonna hear the catchy music and misinterpret the satirical refrain as patriotism.

54

Tom Morello's reply to that one guy who said he used to be a fan of their more conservative songs was classic:

"Please tell me which songs those were so I can make sure we never make another like them."

25

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '22

My favorite. A dingdong commented "another successful musician instantly a political expert" on a photo of Tom Morello with a guitar that said "Fuck Trump". His response:

One does not have to be an honours grad in political science from Harvard University to recognise the unethical and inhumane nature of this administration but well, I happen to be an honours grad in political science from Harvard University, so I can confirm that for you.

His appearance on Bill Maher was pretty good too. Everyone calls RATM commies, but that's not what they actually advocate for. Tom was an intern for a Congressmen, and he was disturbed at how little actual work the Congressmen did and how much time he spent lobbying for campaign donations. No one seems to have a problem with it, and if they do, they earn the title 'commie' apparently.

Well, Peter Navarro argued his statistics training for his social science degree trained him for evaluating covid claims. So even the well trained can overestimate their capabilities.

44

u/Interesting_Mouse Sep 06 '22

tbh, if he had paid attention, it would have. Statistics, as a branch of mathematics, is content-agnostic. It's politics and prejudices that do us in.

29

u/elencus Sep 06 '22

Statistics is also relatively easier to manipulate compared to other sciences. I remember writing undergrad economics papers which included a bunch of statistical tests which I've long forgotten. I do remember, however, staying up all night finding variables that supported my conclusion in a cohesive way. Original variable leads to statistically insignificant results? Try a time lag variant. Or delta time lag. Or slyly use mean income instead of median income. And so on...

I would argue this behaviour is unethical and also very easy to get away with.

24

u/Interesting_Mouse Sep 06 '22

You're correct. The problems are with ethics and competence, not with statistics.

13

u/elencus Sep 06 '22

Exactly. And far more often than not, the people reading the statistics don't know or don't care to properly assess where XYZ conclusion actually comes from. And I feel it's far easier to get away with this laziness in statistical studies than it is, say, surgery--where unethical behaviour is gonna get you a malpractice suit.

So boomers have no right to complain about “millennial snowflakes”, “participation trophies” or “avacado toast”. But he ends the segment with a slam dunk: “ you wanna know how you can help your kids? LEAVE EM THE FUCK ALONE!!!”

This seems like an apropos time to quote Mr. Carlin himself

“I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up. Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you’d expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would’ve been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say “this guy”, because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man. No woman could or would ever fuck things up like this.”

Very nice. Man, Rudy Giuliani.

I wonder if he's self aware enough to understand that had he been hit by a bus in like 2003 or something, there would be a dozen Rudolph Giuliani Elementary Schools around the country and a statue of that guy somewhere in New York City, and now he's forever the clown at Four Seasons Landscaping with hair dye running down his insane, sweaty face....

I was surprised by this one, because they seem okay with in school abortions that are performed with firearms. Also, because it's something that doesn't exist.

11

u/pianoflames Team Moderna Sep 06 '22

I assume it means waiting until the birth happens naturally at ~9 months, and then killing the infant as it comes out.

That doesn't even make evil sense.

All that money on a golden heart to die because he watched Fox News too much.

56

u/Immediate-Ruin2464 COVID IS NO JOKE Sep 06 '22

But he had the dreaded “congested heart failure”! His lousy, incompetent lib doctors probably didn’t inject his heart with mucinex or NyQuil as the family insisted on, and instead stuck to the “Fauci death protocols” to get their sweet $30,000 payout for another “Covid” death. Or something.

53

u/reallygoodbee Team Pfizer Sep 06 '22

One of my coworkers tried to tell me that doctors got paid per Covid death. I made the mistake of questioning it and asking who'd be paying them. "The government.". I asked why. "Because.". I asked where the money is coming from, why nobody in the government is saying anything. "lol you trust the government".

A virus does not give a fuck what you think about it. It does not think at all. All it does is replicate and mutate. And thanks to the shit for brains deceased and everyone like him, and political leaders in thrall to business interests, it has endless possibilities to replicate and mutate.

If it could, the virus would thank you.
