Hi all, here is a more complete presentation of HCA winners. I encountered some interruptions while working on the update over the last 8 months โ€“ I got through it because I wanted to provide an update around my 1 year anniversary on the sub. Here is a link to my original listing. Back then I presented 925 unique portraits and this post contains 1,411, for a total of 2,336 unique people. I still have 160 links of awardees I couldn't identify. Although some of those links may contain redundant profiles, I will likely not know the exact number due to survivors deleting social media profiles or improving their privacy settings.

2,336 people represents about 1 in 500 Americans who have died of Covid since lockdown. Somewhere around 90% of the profiles were American. There were 1,707 men (1,161 of whom had some kind of facial hair โ€“ at least half had the infamous goatee), 629 women, and 257 non-white awardees. I will stress that the awardees aren't representative demographically of Covid deaths. They aren't even representative of unvaccinated deaths. The HCAs were overrepresented by Americans and men, and my best guess is it's because updates were mainly provided by American redditors and possibly because women are less likely to promote their beliefs on social media. Additionally, non-American HCA entries were usually provided by news articles which established that the awardee promoted antivax beliefs, whereas most American HCA entries were from social media.

On a positive note, it's been some time since I've seen the sub generate 10 awards and 20 nominations per day. I'm not seeing the anti-vax posts that I did last year and that can allow for consistent positive vaccination stories to make it through the noise. Advances in Covid and Flu shots are on their way and I'm getting the new booster soon.

This is beautiful work; thank you. These are actual winners (deaths), not nominees (hospitalized)? I want to be sure I understand it correctly. Either way, it's utterly shocking.

91

u/bErinGPleNty Because Other People Matter Too Sep 11 '22

Just imagine how many people out there believed the very same things as our winners but didn't happen to repost memes, or didn't have their privacy set to "none," or had someone scrub their account when they went to the hospital. We have a tiny sample of our fellow human beings. ๐Ÿซฃ

Sorry, I had to leave that other non-Pluto related quote all by itself.

I am of that same age and one of my favorite post-punk bands broke up the day they found out they were the band of the month for Sassy's "Cute Band Alert". Not Tiger Beat, but made me laugh nonetheless.

I was more the guy hanging New Edition, Troop, and Lisa Lisa on my wall.

Now we all have each other, the warm hearts wishing cold deaths upon the revoltingly ignorant.

2

u/Might_Aware โœจHey GhoulFriend!!!!๐Ÿฆ‡๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป Sep 11 '22

I am annoyed I've not heard of Troop, but I am actually a hardcore Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam fan. I love New Edition but I also love Menudo and New Kids on the Block, too. I read Sassy too lol, which post punk band? I am also highly annoyed I do not know this trivia, I'm a post punk fanatic

4

u/BurtonGusterToo Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

Nation of Ulysses broke up the day they saw themselves in Sassy. Went on to become many different bands with different styles over the years; The Make-Up, Cupid Car Club, Scene Creamers, Weird War, David Candy etc EDIT (The singer is EXTREMELY critical of the music industry (specifically) and social/political climate (generally).

Troopwas the "sad teen boy needs a boost" music before school. I love those memories, but wow are they corny as shit.

Were you also Freestyle fan. I live in the Bronx and that was the entire reality of this place back then. Stevie B, Little Susie, Bernard Wright; dance bangers before New Jack Swing.

I'm trying to break the 80s nostalgia meter.

I honestly think it's because the news cycle has somewhat moved on. E.g. in my fairly progressive, science following church, they've gone back to "masks optional" based entirely on the CDC's redefinition of what the "green zone" is. It's infuriating. People think the pandemic is over now. I constantly hear "back during COVID..." COVID IS STILL HAPPENING. I think people are fatigued from following precautions for so long. I definitely am. But I still wear a fucking mask.

8

u/neatoburrito Sep 11 '22

I don't think it's over at all (my 71 year old dad is just getting over it) but those of us that are vaccinated and not wearing masks ARE fatigued and are taking an educated risk because we are vaccinated. My dad had symptoms for four-ish days, is now asymptomatic but still testing positive. My mom hasn't gotten sick at all. Vaccines work and I'm fucking tired of masks. I did what I was supposed to do.

7

u/Theban_Prince Sep 11 '22

But I still wear a fucking mask.

At this point, the negative effects of masks (mostly stress/anxiety and I guess a bit of PTSD?) do outweigh the positives for me.

Everyone I know has been vaccinated and boosted. The chances of something going very wrong truly are equal to any other danger when you get out of the house. And if by then someone in the public is unvaccinated, then it's on their head.

u/kai325d Sep 11 '22

I'm just sick of it. The vaccine works, I've had Covid with no major effects so if I can take my mask off I will, if you're unvaxxed because you choose to at this point then it's on you

Americans also dominated the sub due to low vaccination rates relative to other wealthy nations. Letโ€™s not forget the power of having privilege that people opted out of using in order to own the libs

This part! The privilege of seeing my fellow U.S. Americans rebuff the vaccine while many less wealthy countries that have been dealing with these issues for years and always getting shirked around were again not able to consistently access care for their citizens. Oh, but as long as Ken Bob and Karen Mae can get their "owned the libs" death certificate...๐Ÿ™„

54

u/IlikeJG Sep 11 '22

Also let's not forget that the main factor for an HCA award is the public spread of antivax disinformation and especially doing so in a hateful way and American Republicans seem to thrive on that type of behavior.

There's something wrong with that math.

9

Why do you say that? Math works for me. American deaths of COVID is just over 1.05m

0

u/RickyOzzy Sep 11 '22

Yes 1.05 million does, not 2,036.

15

u/throwaway901617 Sep 11 '22

1.05 million divided by 500 is 2,036.

So 1 in 500 dead Americans is represented in this sub.

This is true. In the UK the State pension age is due to go up to 66 in 2028 and 67 in 2038. A number of estimates have been made independently and they all show that these rises are no longer necessary - in fact, the increase to 66 would only be required in the 2050s or even 2060s.

8

u/youreadusernamestoo Sep 11 '22

Well sheep follow eachother because when one gets spooked, the rest trusts that there was a legitimate reason to get spooked. If a sheep refuses to flee and wants to do its own research, chances are, one day its going to meet a wolf.

Now the analogy fails to mention that we humans look to people who made it their lifeworks to know when to get spooked. You are free to just stand there, nobody will force you to get spooked, but that doesn't make you a cooler animal, just a dumber sheep that might get bit.

21

u/iTinker2000 Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

I figured it might be that. However, if thatโ€™s indeed the case, they donโ€™t know what doxxing is. No one is releasing private information. Facebook is generally public. In fact, if you donโ€™t change the privacy settings of your posts, it says right there that your post is public. These people are just crying because they want their โ€œfree speechโ€ (which isnโ€™t even a relevant issue here, but itโ€™s what they say to justify their bullshit and lies), but donโ€™t want to deal with the consequences of saying very stupid things.

Iโ€™m sorry, but Iโ€™m just so done with these people. Fuck them. Over 1,000,000 people died in the US alone. Some of those people were going to die, sadly, but some of them could have been saved if not for these inbred morons. They deserve all the shame and ire of public scrutiny for being willfully stupid, ignorant, uneducated, conspiracy theory scum.

Itโ€™s 2022. Weโ€™re in an age where the same Internet they use to fill their deficient brains with garbage can be used to actually educate themselves. And like I said, if theyโ€™re so proud of their โ€œviewsโ€, then they need to stop being cowards and OWN it. Fuck them. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ya but, Reddit has a TOS. Subs that don't comply get quarantined. Just ask r The_Donald

9

u/iTinker2000 Sep 11 '22

So, waitโ€ฆare you saying Reddit considers a direct repost/screenshot of someoneโ€™s public Facebook post โ€œdoxxingโ€?

6

u/JuniperTwig Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

That's a somewhat accurate paraphrasing. Whatever the semantics, the TOS is at the root of it. See the sub rules or ask a mod. Examples: 5. Posts about non-public figures must redact the entire name(s) of everyone in every image. Block it out completely. Don't scribble and allow redacted names to leak through. Profile pictures are not allowed and must be blocked out. 7. Do not post about finding or visiting the nominees' or awardees' FB pages. That is considered brigading and is strictly against reddit's TOS. .. also.. it's a million US deaths, not 100k.

3

u/iTinker2000 Sep 11 '22

Thanks for this clarification.

I donโ€™t actually post nominations, just come to look at the posts and memes so didnโ€™t know it was considered doxxing. Also, thanks for the correction. I have noted the correction in my post.

2

u/zinh Sep 11 '22

When the sub was new, they posted whatever was on FB including screen shots and names of the dumb peeps that was public info. Then after the sub got some clout because dumb shits were dying in droves, the family and friends may have been getting doxxed which isn't ok.

1

u/iTinker2000 Sep 11 '22

Yeah, I completely agree. I donโ€™t want them dozed either. I just didnโ€™t think reposting publicly available information/posts directly from their pages was considered doxxing. My understanding is that doxxing is posting private information publicly.

1

u/ParadiseLosingIt Team Moderna Sep 11 '22

What does quarantined mean? Nobody else can see it?

1

u/JuniperTwig Sep 11 '22

I forget. Something like, you can still get to the sub but it doesn't feed to the/a front page. And perhaps mods of said sub are being directed by reddit admins to bring the channel into TOS guidelines... or the sub will be closed. Has happened.

That's the scary thing is that if these fools actually listened to doctors and nurses and not people like Trump most of them would be alive right now. Instead they all got to suffer a painful death and their only relief from that pain was being put under for that ventilator before their deaths.

29

u/plsfixhahaha Sep 10 '22

Damn the same fat goatee guy keeps dyingโ€ฆ

37

u/Monthra77 Sep 10 '22

Hey, donโ€™t lump all of us fat goateed guys in one pile. Some of us got our shots, social distanced and didnโ€™t vote for Trump.

5

u/fragbert66 Team Moderna Sep 11 '22

Yup, I'm part of that club.

I actually shaved off my beard recently for the first time since 1995 because of this very association -- "mid 50s white guy with a goatee? Must be an antivaxx tRumpie!"

I look ridiculous without it. Can't grow it back fast enough.

5

u/sarbah77 Covid jokes have no taste Sep 11 '22

My husband has decided he likes to grow a beard in the winter, from his usual goatee. I HATE it.

But, with the omicron spike, and him as a middle aged overweight white man? I said yes to the beard, to reduce the comorbidities.

3

u/Monthra77 Sep 11 '22

Some of us just need the help framing the face.

1

u/fragbert66 Team Moderna Sep 11 '22

Absolutely. My beard fills out my face, and gives my chin more character. Without my beard, I look like Newman from Seinfeld.

9

u/isshiki-otsutsuki Sep 11 '22

Cleansing of the maggots. COVID has been like an antiseptic to a wound with these idiots.

8

u/Hilarious_Haplogroup Sep 11 '22

"A single death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic."

--Joseph Stalin--

8

u/drlove57 Sep 11 '22

But in the case of antivaxxers a million deaths is fake news.

5

u/Hilarious_Haplogroup Sep 11 '22

indeed...if it didn't happen to them personally, or to an immediate family member, it's just a hoax.

8

u/Brave_Specific5870 Sep 11 '22

itโ€™s interesting at least to me that 257 non white ( that have been recorded here) got their award; and thatโ€™s sad.

I wonder if it was a lack of a combo of things bad information, being scared due to history ( Tuskegee experiment)

9

u/johnnyleegreedo Sep 11 '22

With African-Americans, probably. Black antivaxxers are not uncommon, but among that particular group of people, being antivaxx does not necessarily correlate to voting Republican or supporting Trump.

With Latinos, it's a bit of a different story. From following SAV and FB's HCA page, there have been a surprising number of Latinos featured who are not only antivaxxers but also right-wing Trumpers in general.

5

u/tevinodevost Sep 11 '22

I wonder how many were from traditionally Republican blocs like Cubans in Florida, and how many were "new" GOP voters

3

u/Brave_Specific5870 Sep 11 '22

that makes me so disheartened.

3

u/Wisconsin_Joe Quantum Massage Therapist Sep 11 '22

there have been a surprising number of Latinos featured who are not only antivaxxers but also right-wing Trumpers in general.

There have been some studies on this.

(Warning: Generalization and stereotyping here)

Latino culture tends to value machismo. Male dominance. Toughness.

While that doesn't always accompany misogyny, it often does.

So, despite Trumps blatant racism and anti-immigrant garbage, his overall 'I'm a tough guy' image appeals to that sort.
The fact that Trump is, in fact, nothing close to a 'tough guy' doesn't matter to these idiots.

2

u/chinpokomon Sep 11 '22

It's true of a friend of mine. Her mother is a pharmacist and both of them refuse because of Tuskegee. Definitely not a Trump supporter, but won't take the vaccine either. She does take precautions with masking, but I wish she'd do more.

6

I see it every day and itโ€™s reinforced here; there are a lot of angry old men out there.

6

u/E46_Overdrive Sep 11 '22

It's the "I trust my immune system" profile picture frames that do it for me.

6

u/Affectionate-League9 Sep 11 '22

I'm still really unsure where posters FIND these people. Are they actual facebook friends with these people? in groups? do you seek them out?

I've never understood this

6

u/kneesmadeofcheese Sep 11 '22

You ever click on the comments on a local news post on Facebook about literally anything? 90% of the people in those comments are absolutely furious about the article. What's the article about? Doesn't matter. A bunch of people on Facebook commented on it because they need people to know how angry they are about it. Local kids start a lemonade stand? NICE TO SEE SOME PEOPLE STILL WANT TO WORK UNLIKE THE LIBTARD DEMONRATS FJB AND THE BIDENFLATION MAYBE THEIR PARENTS SHOULD TAKE 90% OF THE MONEY FROM THE LEMONADE STAND TO TEACH THEM ABOUT SOCIALISM COMMUNISM!!!!!!!!!!!

You just click on any of those profiles and you've found yourself a fresh HCA nominee.

5

u/SlayerSteve7337 Sep 10 '22

This really puts it all into perspective for me. I've been lurking this sub for quite awhile and I guess I sort of just got immune to it all - ie: "yep, another dumbass". It really is sad though. Lot of dead folks just to what? Prove a point?

3

u/Berkamin Sep 11 '22

What proportion of them have goatees, were obese, and what proportion were both?

5

u/Zaronax Sep 11 '22

The best part about anti-vaxxers is that they go extinct by themselves.

Someone needs to train an AI to generate the average face of all the herman cain winners. The average man would be an overweight white guy with a goatee standing in front of his Harley. He has Oakley sunglasses and a trump hat. The average woman would be an older, blond, Karan looking woman who wants to sell you her MLM product, also overweight.
