Early on in the pandemic my MAGA Aunt posted something from an OSHA “expert” saying how masks were bad and weren’t mean to be worn frequently. Her son-in-law’s mother responded “Just wear the damn mask, Betty.” I noticed after that she stopped posting anti-mask stuff and never posted anti-vaccine posts. She’s still hardcore MAGA though.

"Please, Betty. You're my mother, I can't spend all my time making sure you don't die. Wear the damn mask!"

Masks choke off oxygen, they don’t work, people wear them wrong, the virus is deadly (sacrificial), the virus isn’t deadly. She just shared and shared contradictory memes and died because of it.

67

u/Educational_Hawk1236 Sep 16 '22

Yeah, the blocking off oxygen but letting in virus particles thing is just another sign of our failed education system. Oxygen molecules are many orders of magnitude smaller than coronavirus particles so masks blocking the very small one but letting the bigger one through makes literal 0 sense…

18

u/steelhips Sep 17 '22

I've seen many disingenuous memes about virus size versus cloth weave also. What they all leave out is the virus is wrapped in larger droplets of moisture that the mask does stop effectively. Never let facts get in the way of propaganda.

The meme with the side pack warning that that particular mask shouldn't be worn to stop transmission made me grrrrrrr. The warning was, of course, for health professionals working in close contact with those infected. It was a mask effective for normal people doing normal things.

17

u/PortableEyes Team AstraZeneca Sep 17 '22

The cloth mask not being "useful" always bothered me. Same for the paper masks. I couldn't wear the paper ones anyway, but the cloth ones - I wasn't an essential worker, I wasn't in contact with people regularly. Hell I was only going food shopping because I was (metaphorically) dragged kicking and screaming from the house. What use would all singing all dancing fancy masks be to me?

No. Save those for the people that need them, and I'll buy a cloth mask from an acquaintance who used any money she received from selling cloth masks to put together scrubs and other...clothing? The word escapes me. But she did it for healthcare workers for free, and that's worth buying a cloth mask for.

Sorry, that was a ramble.

Pretty dark when someone takes issue with what’s in your obit.

259

u/Live-Tomorrow-4865 Sep 16 '22

🤣🤣 That's maybe one of the best things I've ever come across on this sub.

I'd pay cash money to know what was so egregiously wrong in her obit that her ex, (who won't get into his feelings about her because evidently they are known far & wide), had to post a correction.

Also, I hate it when I agree with one of their posts, (usually from a different perspective or angle), but, she wasn't wrong about the "essential" worker thing. Not entirely.

146

u/LVL-2197 Sep 16 '22

Yeah, a couple of the things she posted she was seriously whooshing on. The "essential" worker thing, and the "considering how some people wear their masks..." sign. Fucking statements flew so far above her head, astronauts were documenting it passing by.

63

u/Ricotta_pie_sky ain't no joke Sep 16 '22

A man I know lost his father to covid. He'd worked in a Home Depot which was kept open as essential. People would go there just to get out of the house.

45

u/Live-Tomorrow-4865 Sep 17 '22

My stepdad had the Ace Hardware up the street from where he & my mom live as his "get out of the house" place. But, he grabbed at any chance to go anywhere. He insisted he still continue to do the grocery shopping, (I talked them into letting me do it once, and I believe my daughter did it at least a couple times. But it was rare. He did not like staying at home!!)

It was a source of frustration for my daughter and me, as he wasn't super preoccupied with making sure his mask was clean and on properly. He also did not wash his hands immediately upon coming home. My daughter took on the job of sanitizing the groceries he brought. (Early on, when we still thought that was a useful thing to do!)

24

u/jeffersonbible Prayer Samurai Sep 17 '22

I worked in a grocery store. People would bring their whole family and just wander around aimlessly because it was one of the only places you could go.

11

u/Ragingredblue 🐎Praise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!🐆 Sep 17 '22

And their kids would touch everything! I started adjusting the times I shopped, so as to avoid as many people as possible. This was not for my own safety, it was for theirs. I was growing homicidal just watching those clowns. I hated people already, before the pandemic. I find it shocking that so many people survive to adulthood, given how reckless and stupid they are.

11

u/Pumpkin_Masher Sep 18 '22

I loved to shop at odd hours when no one was there prepandemic. When covid hit they "reduced hours for safety" which made it so the store was always PACKED when it was open. Seems counterintuitive to me. They never did go back to normal hours and I really miss my empty store shopping trips.

4

u/Ragingredblue 🐎Praise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!🐆 Sep 18 '22

Years ago there was a supermarket that was open 24 hours. My housemate and I, who both worked second shift, loved to shop for groceries at 3:00 AM.

In New Zealand we took covid seriously and these kinds of places were closed during our first lockdown lasting a few weeks and reopened once we’d eradicated it. Was depressing as fuck seeing everywhere else do such a shit job.

23

u/anirazarina Team Mix & Match Sep 17 '22

I'm impressed with NZ's handling of the pandemic. I wish we (the US) had adopted a lot more strict control in the beginning. Not to China's "zero-COVID Policy" level, but something more than the sieve we had. Now, hardly anyone takes pandemic precautions anymore.

17

u/Procrasterman Sep 17 '22

Zero covid may have been achievable if everywhere took covid seriously and acted fast at the beginning. We had a few isolated outbreaks and brief lockdowns but we lived pretty much normal lives whilst the more dangerous strains ripped through most other countries.

But instead, neo liberal politicians prioritised tHE eCOnoMy, which ended up fucking the economy.

I’m curious too. They only time I’ve seen anything like this was when my cousin was left out as a grandchild on our grandfather’s obit and her mom who wrote it acted like she forgot her on accident when called out. Her own child… who just happened to be no contact. She only had two kids. She can’t possibly have lost count.

13

u/Live-Tomorrow-4865 Sep 17 '22

That's just sad and wrong! The grandfather, I'm sure, would have wanted all his grandchildren listed.

I did something not quite as egregious. My young adult daughter passed away last November, and I'm the one who wrote her obit. In the background information, I acknowledged that she was born to her biological father and myself, using his name. But under the "survived by" part, I did not list him, because he hurt her deeply when he suddenly went no contact with her about seven or eight years prior. He had never let her into his "new life", with his new wife and children, (siblings she had never met), so I did not list the siblings, either. He did not even respond to the message I sent telling him she had died, nor did he attend her memorial. So, I feel comfortable with my actions. He was named factually, but when you don't talk to your child for no discernable reason for so many years, you don't get listed as a survived by.

7

u/Raspberrylle Sep 17 '22 edited Sep 17 '22

I think you did the right thing. Yes our grandfather was very involved. I was the first grandchild, the one that was left out was their second born a month after me. I have a bunch of vhs tapes he made when we were kids of birthdays and holidays or just playing at the park etc. I actually was raised by him and my grandmother until I was ten so I saw how he was every day and he was all about the grandbabies. They were also foster parents which started with me, and three of my other cousins. The grandchildren list was long, like more than 20 (they had 5 bio children, and a nephew they raised alongside them before I was born then fostered several more).

All the grandkids would come stay the night every weekend like a big sleep over, he always kept a pool for us to swim in, a trampoline, a garden, a bunny rabbit for each grandchild we got to name and give treats but he took care of. He loved her very much so he would have been disappointed for sure. Our grandmother was the primary breadwinner and he kept the house clean and maintained and looked after all the kids. He did work when he was younger as a coal miner in Virginia then building tunnels in Chicago. But then became a homemaker where he thrived. He remembered his work fondly though and told us lots of stories about it. Like how they used to prank and scare each other in the dark mines, can you imagine, so sketchy lol.

She was only non contact with her mom bc her mom was an alcoholic at the time (she has since recovered), and our preacher’s family had taken her in as a live in nanny when she was still a teenager and her mom was jealous of her “new family” that were really just trying to help her out of the neglect at home. (My grandmother had already died before that and my grandfather wasn’t able to help her because his depression was so bad and was getting old and tired.)

6

u/Live-Tomorrow-4865 Sep 17 '22

Bless your Grandpa's soul, he sounds like an amazing man!! Not every person would be up to the important job of taking care of multiple grandchildren, but it sounds as though that was his passion in life. Glad he was there for you.

The keypad copypasta bugs me. First of all, no you won't be safe sitting over there, that's why we wanted a shutdown and why when people get sick we're like, "damn, they probably got it when they went out for dinner and drinks the other day." But putting plastic over the keypad actually helps. If you spray a normal keypad with sanitizer the liquid will get into the gaps between the keys and fry the circuits. If you cover it with plastic, you can sanitize the plastic regularly between customers and fewer people will be exposed to germs. USE YOUR FREAKING BRAIN TO MAKE INFERENCES FROM INCOMPLETE INFORMATION YOU NUMPTIES!

These are people who avoid indoor dining and other high risk settings.

Masking isn't a perfect solution, but who needs to show off their dazzling looks to strangers on a plane that they'll never see again?

Mild for those with a functioning immune system. Those of us who struggle to fight off every little cold pretty much knew to take this seriously.

6

u/Confident_Fortune_32 Sep 17 '22

For some of us, the vaccine doesn't work. I'm vaccinated, but it had no effect. It needs a functioning immune system to do any good.

I got COVID pre-vaccines despite strictly isolating at home, due to a plumbing emergency. The damage (+ long COVID) leaves me terrified of what would happen if I get it a second time.

I still haven't figured out how I am ever going to end isolation at home???

Yeah, many people were killed out right but how many more will die of lingering damage from covid.

No one gets to choose but maybe this Awardee would rather have been killed outright than live on with very limited abilities.

I personally have no sympathy left for people that try to 'own the libs' at retail or grocery stores.

Those poor people get paid shit to work shit jobs because of a shit system that is keeping then generationally poor. Just get your stuff and stop bullying them because they are too afraid to say anything because if they get fired then they are homeless.

I hope that whatever after life this person was chucked at has them answering for that.

That last slide is pretty hot stuff. It makes me wonder if any close family members actually felt bad she was dead. And why yes, I have seen that happen before, that almost visible wave of relief that the toxic one is truly gone. One acquaintance confided that her family member had been cremated and ashes sealed and buried underground with the largest flat headstone possible as no one wanted any part of that person to escape. She was specific in her description. Thank you Dionysius for that fun afternoon.

6

u/Jaguar-spotted-horse Sep 17 '22

The restaurant thing is so stupid. They only made those rules because so many crybabies insisted they open their doors. Nobody has ever said it was safe to take it off once you get to the table. Nobody ever said particles magically disappear when people ate. Eating at restaurants is what all these dummies had to have, so they were accommodated and they still cried about it.

5

u/Moose_is_optional Sep 17 '22

I'm confounded by the stupidity of that first meme. How can anyone be so unintelligent to actually post that on your Facebook, let alone create it?

Wearing masks does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It also doesn't rob you of oxygen. I can't believe you'd have to explain that to some people.

4

u/Haskap_2010 ✨ A twinkle in a Chinese bat's eye ✨ Sep 17 '22

Living in a cold climate and having exercise induced asthma, I should have died years ago while out for winter runs on very cold days, by her reasoning. I always had to wear a ski tube over my face to warm the air up before it hit my bronchial tubes.

9

u/your_mind_aches Team Sinopharm Sep 17 '22

She was right about one thing. The whole "you can take your mask off when you reach the table" thing was nonsense. Especially at that point in 2020, pre-vaccine. Indoor dining should have been shut down, PERIOD. Hell, even outdoor dining.

Just keeping dining in away until the vaccine could have saved so many lives.

I’ve always found it fascinating. Some of their concerns are legitimate. Yes a congregation of people in an enclosed space like a restaurant can definitely cause spread of Covid and wearing a mask at the door won’t help. But the reaction to that is wildly different.

Most people would go, well that’s why we need people to get vaccinated. That will reduce the spread, and we can go back to living our lives.

But these people double down further. Won’t mask up. Won’t get vaccinated. Just go around breathing on people.

4

u/james_d_rustles Sep 17 '22

The funny thing is that they make it sound as though the waitress/hostess/cashier/etc is just astounded by this woman’s impeccable logic, totally dumbfounded by the genius woman who doesn’t want to wear a mask.. in reality, (if it even happened), I guarantee the hostess was definitely dumbfounded, not at the amazing arguments, but at the fucking crazy woman bitching and moaning about wearing masks for a 20 foot walk, when if she had just put it on and gone to her table she’d already have it off by then.

6

u/Haskap_2010 ✨ A twinkle in a Chinese bat's eye ✨ Sep 17 '22

Fun fact: (a small amount of) CO2 is in fact good for you

One of the functions CO2 perform in our body is maintaining blood pH levels (along with HCO3). Too much and your blood becomes too acidic; too little and your blood becomes too alkaline. And your blood being too acidic or alkaline could literally kill you

2

u/PainRack Sep 17 '22

Apparently, harm mitigation doesn't exists in kiss me Kate world . Eating at restaurants is riskier than walking outdoors, but you can lower the risk by increasing social distancing and etc. It's still riskier than outdoors but it's safer than if nothing was done.

The same applies even if the virus is airborne, although airborne does make a lot of the precautions like plexiglass very ineffective.

CO2 would not ever be a concern. It's a small molecule.

To put it into perspective, you can consider Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen to all be the same size. They're close enough, so say they're identical. Carbon is actually the smallest of the three, but whatever.

Guanine is a component of DNA and RNA. There are hundreds of thousands of Guanine molecules in a single Covid viron. Guanine's chemical formula is C5H5N5O. Essentially 5 CO2 molecules worth of "stuff", plus 5 free hydrogen atoms. Covid virons have hundreds of thousands of these guys as it is a nucleotide base in its RNA.

Plus all the other shit that makes up a viron, proteins etc.

There is no fucking way any filter on earth could stop CO2 and let Covid through.
