Guess who was first in line to get their covid vaccine in December 2020? Yes exactly! Politicians on both sides of the aisle couldn't wait to be vaccinated first and send out pictures of themselves with a needle in their arm. Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, Marco Rubio, Bernie Sanders, Mitt Romney, AOC, Lindsey Graham, Kamala Harris, and even Joni Ernst posed proudly for their vaccination pictures. All 50 governors are vaccinated.

Yet this meme still made rounds beyond 2020. Spread mostly from two accounts from Denmark. Who in their right mind would still share this after watching politicians fall over themselves to rush to be vaccinated in December 2020?

And no, the vaccine shouldn't have been tested on politicians first. It should have been and was tested on willing volunteers. Because people who don't give informed consent shouldn't be used as guinea pigs.

This is just a meme framing the vaccine as experimental and untested, packaged as a joke about politicians. Politicians who are still alive. Unlike some folks.

The way the antivax people responded to this is by saying that they were just being given saline injections, or that the syringes were fake. There were these pictures where they would zoom in on the arm and point to things that supposedly showed the needle wasn't actually going in, or that the nurse didn't press the plunger.

And those higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies taken from a spike IgG titer after their "saline" injection that would be orders of magnitude higher than a vaccine naïve individual? Just a fluke. Pay no attention! Look! A squirrel!

Like, what would the government even have to gain by pretending to vaccinate everyone? To justify the lockdowns? I don't even think the lockdowns were that extensive in 2021, but okay, so they want to temporarily keep you at home. To what end? Shutting down commercial activity in every major metropolis? For what benefit? And what's the excuse for continuing boosters now that the pandemic is "over"?

The logical progression of antivaxxers never makes any sense because they're so used to pathologically lying that they never give any proper thought to what they believe and say.

Before they came out, it just seemed very quickly developed and there had been a lot of worries about the first released vaccine Sputnik V. I admittedly wouldn't be able to read studies myself. As I said, when I saw what people with scientific staff and self interest did, I changed my mind...

I flew to the US to get mine since Colombia was several months behind in getting them. Also there was no organized antivax or antimask movement here. The conservative govt called everyone to make appointments when it was their turn.

29

u/dumdodo Sep 20 '22

Oh well. The vaccines were tested on 70,000 people first, not politicians. However, the politicians were first in line to publicly get their vaccinations to encourage everyone to get them (not many opposed them), but for some reason the Trumplings refused, anyway.

Amazing that despite all those vaccine deaths and complications that VAERS verified, no politician or public figure died from the vaccines, or reported severe, lingering side effects.

Millions of other people around the world did, apparently, and every antivaxxer knows numerous people who died and had severe vaccine side effects.

20

u/SpacePoddity Team Pfizer Sep 20 '22

Not one single person I've challenged on the claim of "I know numerous people who've had severe reactions and a few who have died from the jab!" has been able to cite an actual close contact who has done so, where the vaccine has been verified as the cause. Not one. And yet they "know numerous people...."

Yes, there have been folks who've had severe adverse reactions, some hospitalized, some who've died. But given the estimated 5 BILLION people who are fully vaccinated worldwide? A really, truly small drop in the bucket. Tragic, yes, but so incredibly rare, compared the number of people who've experience severe illness and death from COVID itself.

7

u/Confident_Fortune_32 Sep 21 '22

I unfortunately turned out to be one of those few ppl who did have a bad reaction to the vaccine - damaged heart muscle is the worst part. It's been an unpleasant experience. But I've found a good cardiologist and we are getting the medications and dosages sorted out.

However, I am not sorry I was vaccinated. (it's not like anyone thinks they will be that one person). And I am still 100% pro-vax.

My personal experience does not negate the overall proven safety + efficacy. I have not lost my ability to understand research statistics.

Have we not just conducted the largest and fastest vaccine rollout in history?

I'm still the one who reminds my darling husband to get each booster the instant he is eligible.

2

u/SpacePoddity Team Pfizer Sep 21 '22

Ugh, I hate that for you. It sucks being one of those "rare few". You definitely have an awesome outlook on things (and are super sensible, besides).

Did you apply for the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program? COVID is covered by it.

https://www.hrsa.gov/cicp

I have an extremely bad reaction to the antibiotic erythromycin (like, crawling on my hands and knees to the bathroom, gastro-intestinal bonanza all the way), yet I understand that the benefits outweigh the risks for millions of people each year for that life-saving antibiotic. I just happened to be one of those few for whom it's dangerous.

3

u/onepinksheep Sep 21 '22

Not one single person I've challenged on the claim of "I know numerous people who've had severe reactions and a few who have died from the jab!" has been able to cite an actual close contact who has done so, where the vaccine has been verified as the cause. Not one. And yet they "know numerous people...."

Midway through this sub's existence, I bumped into a Covidiot lurking here who made that same argument. They kept pointing to VAERS, which of course is a self-reporting thing with no vetting. I challenged them to then find the antivaxxer equivalent to the HCA, if there were indeed such people who died from the vaccine. Where are the screenshots and FB posts of these supposed cases? If there were indeed so many of these "victims", something would have gone public by now. The very fact that there's no anti-HCA list shows that their claims are bum.

9

u/Imaginary-Fun-80085 Sep 20 '22

Well you don't live in the misinformation bubble that says that millions died from the vaccine. That's a big problem.

9

u/grom_icecream Sep 20 '22

It is not a bad idea, but it is disingenuous. My father was able to get vaccinated in December 2020, but waited until January 2021. He wanted to see that there were no major adverse side effects after two week of more than a million people taking the vaccine.

Anti vaxxers call anyone who took the vaccine a Guinea pig. Fine; we were test subjects - what was the result of the test? First they predicted that they would drop dead days after taking it. Then in 6 months. Then that they will have fertility problems. Then the real problems will happen in 2 years. All of it proven false, but it never ends.

8

u/purrfunctory Paralympics: "Great idea! Let's race them!" Sep 20 '22

Even if, if, health issues crop up in the future due to the vaccine, you know what? At least I survived a far longer period of time than I would have without it.

That alone, to me, is worth it. I’m 5 shots into this disaster of a pandemic. Got my latest booster once the newest one was released. Also got my flu shot. Next week I get my pneumonia shot.

I’m paralyzed from the bra band down. I have T2 Diabetes, I’m obese and due to medications I take to manage the multiple comorbid conditions I have it’s incredibly hard to lose weight. Also I can only move my arms and part of my torso so exercise is really tough. I’ve lost a lot of weight with caloric deficit but it’s hard to deal with. In short, my health sucks as it is and covid would kill me easily.

And if this vaccine gives me issues further down the line.. at least I didn’t die from covid, drowning from my own fluids. At least I got a few precious, extra years with my husband and friends, my found family and my dogs. At least I survived to see more sunsets and sunrises, I got to laugh and sing and live my life to the very best of my ability given my physical and health issues.

That time is precious to me. The memories I made for myself and others. The things I learned about myself, the things i learned about others, the joy I got to experience and share.

Every minute of that is priceless. If I pay for it later with side effects or problems I’ll do so without complaint because it means I lived.
