I wonder how many nominees and family members of the award winners ever see these Meta / Other

I've always been curious about. Has anyone experienced that? Like, oh..there's my crazy MAGA Uncle with 4000 upvotes cuz he won an award

"Yeah, I bring this chickpea salad to basically every potluck now. Found the recipe from people talking about how Uncle Marv died without getting the shot."

13

u/Salty-Bake7826 Sep 22 '22

Wait. Is that recipe in this sub? Because I like both chickpeas and salad!

As far as I know, no. But my favorites are channa masala and chickpea fake tuna. It's hard to go wrong with chickpeas.

Asking the real questions here.

169

u/Pavlock Sep 21 '22

I know one. He was nominated a few months ago, but did not collect the award. He did spend about 10 months in the ICU and still can't walk under his own power. When he was well enough to start posting on FB again, the nomination here was one of his comments.

I'd post, but a mutual friend knows my profile and I suspect she'd rat me out.

10 months in icu??? And they’re still anti vaxx?

128

u/ur_sine_nomine Team Mix & Match Sep 21 '22

Yes. In fact the opposite, where they recant, is rare.

(Bear in mind that most of the nominees are rural and isolated in every sense. If they recanted, their “friends” would turn on them because their position had been undermined. The power of a group to force conformity, even if that results in it marching over a cliff, is colossal).

55

u/BigVariation3 Sep 21 '22

Isolated and rural describes my dad to a t. Thankfully he’s not a moron (pro vax, science etc) but the world has become a big scary place to him.

5

u/OkApplication6827 Team Moderna Sep 22 '22

Virtual hugs for your dad...it's probably even lonelier for him.

5

u/BigVariation3 Sep 22 '22

Sadly he likes it. No interest in friends. He enjoys puttering in his garden all day every day. A very simple low stress life.

6

u/akayataya Sep 22 '22

To the point there had to be clandestine vaccination facilities for people to be able to secretly get vaccinated so their friends and families didn't know they were vaccinated. That is fucking insane.

4

u/AuroraItsNotTheTime Sep 21 '22

Does your disorder cause you to do this with all rhetorical questions or just some?

38

u/Pavlock Sep 21 '22

He'll tell you he was never "anti-vax" but then parrot all the anti-vax talking points.

24

u/RockyMoose Natasha Fatale's Crush 🐿️ Sep 21 '22

He's not anti-vax, he's pro-Covid.

13

u/nuklearphusion Sep 21 '22

They’re not anti-vax… they just did their own research and decided the scientists and medical professionals with advanced degrees are just trying to make a buck and keep the masses under government control. Open your eyes people!

21

u/TokiWartoorh Sep 21 '22

I love to ask the people who say they “do their own research” where their lab is & what degrees they have & if they have any peers working with them, I ask in a genuinely excited really positive way rather than a sarcastic fashion. It really throws them for a second or two

9

u/So-done-with-crazy WTF?! Sep 21 '22

They decided to listen to the one dissenting opinion rather than the consensus view.

6

u/akayataya Sep 22 '22

I like how after a year and a half of spitting his condescending, arrogant, hateful, acerbic antivax rhetoric, Covid kicked Phil Valentine's ass for like 8 weeks in the ICU before finally getting rid of him, and his family had the fucking audacity to say "he wasn't antivax; he was vaccine-hesitant" (after writing a parody song of Tax Man called, of course, Vax Man). Pathetic.

5

u/DeeNYC45 Sep 21 '22

You're surprised? People have lost their children and are still antivax

6

u/hors-texte Sep 21 '22

Only an idiot would be bamboozled by their own children who are clearly crisis actors. You can’t trick them; they do their own research.

3

u/herbw Sep 22 '22

well, up in colorado city, they were pretty much isolated, but an outbreak of the measles there, changed their minds.

That's how events are usually processed.

3

What I’ve read more than once is that blocking someone means you don’t see them anymore but they can still see your posts and comments.

8

Just pass the info to someone else in this sub and they can post it. But you will miss the upvotes.

u/GooeyInterface Sep 21 '22

u/RantingRobot Even without names or faces, it's amazingly simple to track down most HCAs on FB. Pretty sure that's how the hits keep on coming. And sometimes idiot trolls show up on those accounts of the dead or dying and their grieving families, but doesn't necessarily mean they came from Reddit.

15

u/deputydog1 Sep 21 '22

It is wrong to troll the grieving and sick. Cruelty is never the choice, regardless

95

u/morga1kn Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

I saw a winner on here from the hospital I work at. Wife of the winner was batshit so nurses from all the ICUs were very familiar with the patient. So I’m sure families see these on occasion.

265

u/Target2030 Sep 21 '22

One of my co-workers showed up here. The poet nurse. He was always a crazy conspiracy nut but it caught up with him and he earned his award. After he was here and on some other websites, people tracked down his and his wife's facebook accounts. I don't feel sorry for any of these people but I'm definitely not tracking down family members.

61

u/HallucinogenicFish 💉 Are Not Political Sep 21 '22

Dr. Qeuss? That guy was pretty out there.

103

u/now_you_see Sep 21 '22

Tracking down peoples families is pretty fucked. Someone they loved just died, if that isn’t enough to make them reconsider their beliefs then some fucking troll from bum fuck nowhere isn’t going to change anything.

I don’t have any problem laughing at people who dig their own graves & get handed a Darwin or HC award for their troubles & if the families find it in poor taste, too bad. But there’s a big difference between someone finding out you’re laughing and tracking someone down to laugh in their crying face.

6

u/felpudo Sep 22 '22

Yeah, that's despicable. If someone reading this does that- stop.

84

u/starla79 Sep 21 '22

I was looking at one and realized it was an old acquaintance of mine, or rather her husband, who basically killed her with Covid before dying himself. Such a shame. But then I saw what trash their kids/family were and realized maybe my impression of her was wrong. She seemed like a very kind, generous person.

75

u/GnarlyNarwhalNoms Sep 21 '22 Silver

She may have been. Sometimes wildflowers can sprout in pig shit.

64

u/Morriganx3 GoShootMe Sep 21 '22

I worked with a nurse who seemed like the kindest, most compassionate person, until she got comfortable enough with me to start talking about people “playing the race card” and how glad she was that I hadn’t had an abortion (I had my first as a teen, not because I’m anti-choice. It was the right choice for me. I’ve also had an abortion. She didn’t like that so much when I explained it to her).

She was still incredibly kind and compassionate to 98% of patients, (and coworkers), but get one Black woman in there who seemed a little impatient with the wait and no more veiled racism - it was right out in the open.

Needless to say she was a tfg supporter, as were most of my coworkers in that dept. The only person I know who died of COVID was one of those coworkers. I left in 2017, so no idea how they all felt about masks, but the one who died had posted a bunch of photos of a conspicuously maskless wedding two weeks prior.

38

u/spooopycats Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

It will always baffle me that nurses can be anti-science. Abortions and vaccinations are medical procedures that save lives. Not only that, but someone whose whole job is caring for ALL people, but they’re discriminatory towards folks of a different race? People like her should never work in healthcare.

15

u/WarmishIce Sep 21 '22

Right? Like, they see how science saves lives pretty much daily, but these two things are just completely different? How?

This sub has a perceived connotation of it being in existence to just laugh at others pain. Like we wish for death/suffering and are gleeful when those close to noms and awardees grieve. It’s more projection based than anything as 90% of the posts are usually hateful people themselves. I’ve had commentaries on other Reddit subs that think we are a ghoul house. It’s a shame that the unspoken message of this sub has gotten stifled by believed perception.

I have a niece who has several of the anti-vaxx memes on her Facebook page and has had Covid twice this year that I know of. She is 53 and looks 80. I wouldn't be surprised to see her here sometime.

101

u/CatsPolitics Team Moderna Sep 21 '22

I’m so sorry. My niece (in her mid 30’s) actively campaigned in 20 & 21 to get her kids’ schools to drop the mask mandate. She cited the effects of carbon dioxide and how masks retain germs, etc. She’s got a bachelor’s degree but grew up listening to Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc and is indoctrinated. It’s sad for me to see her and my family go down the rabbit hole, but it’s their choice.

90

u/SabreCorp Sep 21 '22

All the anti-vaxx people in my neighborhood have moved on to “Mom’s for Liberty”. It’s an alt-right astroturfing conservative non-profit that started as an anti-vaxx group that is now banning books.

There’s chapters popping up everywhere and they are incredibly successful, unfortunately. So if anyone is wondering if their anti-vaxx neighbors and family members have gotten quiet… they have most likely moved on to banning books in public schools.

They are also running for school boards. Please check the mom’s for Liberty website to see if anti-vaxx, book banners are running in your school district.

And please vote to remove these people.

At some point anyone with a brain will refuse to be a part of school boards. They get threatened and people look up their address and show up at their home. It’s a volunteer position. Dummies will create more dummies in their image. I am trying to stay hopeful in this crazy world but everything I see points to disaster.

"Liberty" it seems is the freedom to order other people around and organise their lives.

17

u/SabreCorp Sep 21 '22

Every time you see a headline with banning books, this group is behind it. But they have Koch money fueling them, and every anti-vaxx mom as their foot soldiers. Oh, and they are fucking crazy on top of it. They already chased out a teacher from my neighborhood because they were stalking her. She moved because she felt her safety was at risk (she was right). That’s how I’m so familiar with this group, they have already caused a lot of damage for us locally.

8

u/Alfphe99 Sep 21 '22

They also do a decent job of hiding their agenda just looking at their site from the outside perspective. Some key words and images that are abused by the cult of the right, but most verbage seems like something anyone that cares could get behind.

Usually it's so obviously right wing nonsense they can't go two sentences without using buzzwords like "woke".

u/blarryg Sep 21 '22 Take My Energy

I'm one of those pointy-headed globalist elite liberal Jews but I have a "Texan slow motion car crash evangelical" branch of our family. Kids, marriages, divorces, praise Jesus. One of the kids got married to an airline mechanic who flies a plane. Yeah he had 2 kids from 2 different former wives but he seemed OK. She was 19 and was fertilized before marriage (praise the lord). Had a kid and I swear started on another the next day. But I'm like "what the heck, they both work, at least it's stable" BUT in month 6 he disappears. Oh, it turns out he's a manic-depressive (not dissing on mentally ill, but this Texas family *always* finds something -- slow motion car wreck, so it's a non-compliant with treatment manic depressive). Explains the 2 former marriages. So she moves back in with my brother in his half-built house out in the country. +3 more kids to the household and another on the way. There are 6 or 8 other kids from bros and kids other ex marriages who come in and out. It helps me understand the MAGA life. They are ANGRY, bewildered and by Jesus it's someone else's fault!!

They don't spew anti-vax, niece is an EMT there was a few memes on "this is how they thank their first responders" and she's going to quit if they hold up the vax requirement, but somehow she's still working there and I'm guessing bro did get vaxxed. His wife is anti-vax but, he's indeed a really nice guy but a compulsive liar.

So, somehow, they've either had covid and all survived and/or are low key anti-vax but are all vaxxed. I don't know and Jesus doesn't mind a white lie, especially if they are white. I do well financially and my sister wants me to help them out. I tell her "there's not enough tar in Texas to fill that pothole", no thanks, maybe Jesus will help. So, none of them died, none of them post much political stuff, so no HCA stuff to tuck into.

I do think it's ironic that the anti-vax movement is fueled by Russian propaganda/gasliting etc and yet it's from the mouth of Jesus by now.

8

u/AdAcademic4290 Sep 21 '22

"Not enough tar in Texas..." 🤣🤣🤣 brilliant!

3

u/blarryg Sep 22 '22

I think there are 2 camps -- the majority of Jews are educated/liberalish and so are completely on the vax side. But some, what they hate to be called, "ultra-orthodox" ones don't accept vaccines either because of ignorance (see the New York Yeshiva scandal -- some of the kids don't even know English when they finish High School, they have memorized their books and know Yiddish and Hebrew) or because they love Trump for being pro-Israel. Now, that gets a little weird because some really fundamentalist Orthodox Jews do not (trigger warning) do not support Israel because they think the Messiah is going to do that and these secularists who founded modern Israel are just pretenders to the throne. So, some of them luv Trump even so ... well nothing says people have to be consistent.

I’m not entirely on board with this myself. I view these HCA winners as American fascists that endanger the rest of us. It’s for the best when a rabid animal succumbs to its illness. You can’t cure them and they represent a menace to innocent people. It doesn’t really matter if they were nice to their dog or whatever.

HCA winners are correct in an ironic way; they didn’t die of COVID, even though it was the proximate cause. They died of a fatal meme (in the original sense of the word): that you can wish an alternate reality into existence if you believe it hard enough.

u/Glamour_Girl_ Hydrogen 2: Electric Boogaloo ⚡️ Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22 Brighten My Day

Death does not require celebration. It simply is. So, lemme see here….we’re supposed to bear witness to all of this pointless suffering and death without saying one fucking word about the very poor choices that got these humans a ticket across the River Styx?

We’re supposed to accept that these (in most cases) truly awful racists and bigots can simply ignore all well-intentioned advice and protocols and merrily infect Gid knows who else while spewing their sewage the entire time?

We’re supposed to dutifully clasp our hands and beg for blessings upon people who would want us silenced or in camps or dead?

We’re supposed to magically accept that these people were truly salt of the fucking Earth hominids who were just rough around the edges but would give you the shit off their backs?

We’re supposed to feel sorry for these asses who heaped pale after pale of manure on expertise and good fucking advice and then got their asses snatched by Covid?

I’m supposed to accept round after round of hatred and bigotry from these supposed “Christians” as they beg for their lives due to their own ignorance and narcissism?

I don’t think so, bitch. It’s high time someone showed these fools the inverse of the bloody Rainbow. I don’t coddle and drown my enemies with love. I fight. So…..

Pail.

Spouse had cancer during COVID. Diagnosed about the time the vaccines existed, but were not available. Died of cancer a year later. Oh, god, the hoops we had to jump through because so many awardees and the nominated took up valuable resources - doctors, nurses, hospital rooms. I was afraid we'd get COVID at some medical appointment, but we never did.

I wonder how much collateral damage the antivaxers did before receiving their awards.

u/Glamour_Girl_ Hydrogen 2: Electric Boogaloo ⚡️ Sep 21 '22

Probably roughly equivalent to the casualties due to disease in the First World War.

Even worse, it is obvious to me that they just don’t care.

And that’s horrifying.

7

u/bilgetea Sep 21 '22

Even worse, some of them do care - in the opposite direction - and actively wish harm on the rest of us.

Popper’s paradox applies here: A tolerant society must not tolerate intolerance. When I was a kid we were taught that letting Nazis march was necessary for free speech. Turns out that was privileged thinking. It was possible to tolerate it when it wasn’t really a culture-ending danger. We don’t have that luxury.

When an attacker breaks into your house, bent upon harming you, there is no time for peaceful discussion and understanding. It’s you or them. We’re at this point in history; the attackers have announced their intention to destroy the rest of us and have acted upon it. Hundreds of thousands of people would have survived COVID if rational rules were followed. Those people were murdered, but we haven’t come to terms with that yet.

We’re next, by some other method, unless we do something to protect ourselves.

We may be forced to do it, it’s true.

I’m so sorry to hear about this. It has to be immensely frustrated to see all those idiots jeopardising the care that your spouse required. I hope you’re pulling through.

21

u/EC-Texas Sep 21 '22

Thank you. It was terribly frustrating. I think I'm doing alright. I had a year of grieving before Spouse died knowing it was incurable from the first diagnosis of cancer.

13

u/WarmishIce Sep 21 '22

Right? I understand that wishing death upon people is a lot, but if those people willingly chose to put themselves and others in danger, AND take up valuable resources, then… well it makes me happy to hear a hospital bed is open for someone who actually cares about others

9

u/udhayam2K Sep 21 '22

Sorry for your lose and you are spot on about these idiots taking up resources because of their stupidity. How many innocents lost their life! pathetic.

4

u/SpacePoddity Team Pfizer Sep 22 '22

My condolences on the loss of your spouse. My father passed earlier this year from cancer diagnosed in 2019, and for two years we all lived with the fear that he'd be exposed to COVID while he was trying to fight it. Shockingly, in spite of living in a state with an anti-mask/anti-mandate governor, he didn't get it, although cancer took him in the end.

Our question to these nominees should be: what's your kill count? How many did you willfully expose before you discovered that "covid is no joke"?

6

u/EC-Texas Sep 23 '22

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

As an amateur genealogist, one of my (stupid) concerns is that years from now, someone will see Spouse's date of death and think, "Oh, that was during the COVID pandemic. I bet he was an anti-vaxxer. One too self-righteous to get the vaccine."

No, no! He died of cancer! After checking with the oncologist, we both got the vaccinations as soon as we could. Somehow we never caught it.

u/Ostreoida V-A-C-C-I-N-E, I don't want those tubes in me! Sep 23 '22

Beyond the Pale?

Dumb joke, sorry.

More sorry that you lost your spouse. I didn't, and that's bizarre given certain recurrent risk factors and exposure.

One of our parents had to postpone major surgery because the COVID patients were taking up all the hospital resources. Blue people in a deep red state. Privileged, good medical connections, but still screwed over by these fucktards.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I went to a good buddies funeral in Dec. not Covid and out of the blue at 54. Saw another buddy from KY I hadn’t seen in years and we talked about this thread. He said “I’ll have a relative on there someday - bunch of kick morons.”

He called me about three weeks later to tell me his sister won her award. Not the same as randomly seeing it here, but close.

22

u/Lazy_Mouse3803 Sep 21 '22 edited Sep 21 '22

One of the people that used to live in my town named “Kentucky Blue” was nominated here and for good reason. He poisoned people’s minds with misinformation despite himself being a Pharmacist. Good riddance. I never knew the guy personally though. But many people in my town revered him and were sad to hear of his passing.

7

u/Fit_Relationship1094 Big Pharma's Shill 💊💉 Sep 21 '22

Hopefully his untimely death conveyed a message about his value set and made them reassess the esteem they held him in.

10

u/Lazy_Mouse3803 Sep 21 '22

Most likely won’t. Like 90% of my town is anti vax and anti mask so when they heard of his untimely death, their mindset was “I guess it was his time. God wanted him back.” They never considered the fact that if he was vaxxed, he could’ve lived but according to them, the vaccine doesn’t help and there’s nothing they could do if “god called him back”. Honestly hate how my town is full of science denying evangelicals.

Thx. Really shocking so many people you are acquainted with died. The only person I know is my vaccinated elderly FIL. In August 2021 after being so careful for a year and a half, getting his vaccine and masking, he decided to go to a wedding. He didn't know the bride and groom were anti-vaxxers. A lot of the family got sick. Sadly he died. He was a good age, 87, but spry, witty and otherwise healthy so despite his advanced years his death was unexpected. I guess we all have to go at some point but his death hit his kids very hard and has caused some bitterness between those who held the wedding and those who attended it. This silly politicization of a health emergency will have long lasting impact on our country.

4

I've complained about my Trumpy anti-vaxx family here, but I don't have it in me to put them on here if they get hospitalized or die. It would be grim to paint over their faces to post them. They use shitty memes too. I guess that's hypocritical because each case serves to remind all of us to get vaccinated.

3

My mom's gross Trumpy husband is anti-vax; we're not friends on Facebook, so I don't know if he posts that kind of bs or not, but if he died, I would be the FIRST person to come running with screenshots if his wall were public (I don't know if it is or not)! He's awful and deserves to be shamed, and I'd be alllllllllllllllllllll over that, but he's been a huge dick for AGES and I can't stand him, so.

3

u/littlemissfordy Sep 23 '22

I know one. A good friend, he didn’t believe in covid, never wore a mask, went everywhere. He and his wife both fell ill after a trip, he went down hill very quickly and ended up on a ventilator. Then he spent two weeks in icu and died, his wife was also in hospital at the time of his death in icu and she survived. She has since been vaccinated completely changed her views and now suffers from breathing difficulties due to long covid. I can’t help but think that she lives everyday thinking what if he had the vaccine.

2

u/oldladypanties Sep 21 '22

No family member. But I am four degrees removed from one nominee. I am a friend of a friend of a friend of the nominee. He was a lawyer in Georgia with two kids and a lawyer wife. He caught Covid, but had no health insurance and was anti-vax and wound up on the vent and needing special care. Clearly a no-win situation. I wonder what happened to him. I do not remember his name, just remember his face.

2

u/HerringWaffle Happy Death Day!⚰️ Sep 21 '22

Not *quite* the same thing, but I was scrolling through Facebook around, I don't know, maybe December of last year, searching for Covidiots, and to my huge surprise, after a string of random people from all over, I found someone from my hometown - it was through someone else's post (I had just done a random search using the search tool on Facebook and after a bit of scrolling, one of the names looked familiar to me, so I clicked, and there it was). I have no idea what this dude's attitude toward the vaccines were, but he clearly hadn't been vaccinated, and he wound up in like five hospitals and a rehab before making it home. He was pretty bad off. He's still in pulmonary rehab, from what I can tell, and still not back at 100%. He would likely have no idea who I was, but I remember him from the babysitter we shared after school when I was eight and he was like three.
