I finally got my bivalent booster today - Moderna. I'll be a little bit antsy for the next several days, hoping I didn't have the bad luck of catching the virus at the eleventh hour (I haven't caught it yet).

Arm is sore but it's not the side I sleep on. Not expecting any other side effects, based on past experience.

Gosh, I hope I can keep avoiding this virus. Getting a little tired of this pandemic. But there is so much to be grateful for. I'll go off and be grateful for all that stuff, now.

You will be fine.

You can not eliminate all your risk . . . but you can reduce your risk to a manageable level. (That's something the prey items fail to comprehend.)

Be safe, and live your life.

I got the Pfizer and just felt really fatigued the next day. The sore arm (to the touch, movement was fine) lasted for like 3 days though.

Gosh, I hope I can keep avoiding this virus.

Same. I keep avoiding it as the plague it is but at least we're vaccinated for the best chance to survive/have a mild case. Hang in there!

I got my bivalent on Tuesday along with my flu shot. Oh yeah, sore arm. NBD. This time I got Moderna to mix things up. I never had any reaction before, but I started falling asleep almost an hour later. No energy for about 24 hours. Slept a lot and watched TV from the bed. Dogs kept me company and frankly it was a kinda nice day. Worst part was that I wasn't really capable of cooking (huge smile). Hubby jumped in and fed us all.

I don't know if I had the reaction because I switched drug companies, or the flu shot got to me, or both. I don't care, I feel a lot safer now.

All in all, I took advantage of the down time and made the most of it. Do the same. You'll be fine.

Got my bivalent Pfizer with flu shot this week. Fifth Covid shot with zero side effects, not even a sore arm.

Nice! I didn't have a sore arm last time. At least I know for sure this time that I got it ;-)

Getting married today. My bride-to-be, our daughter (almost 3), and I are all vaccinated. So are most of our families.

Except my dumb-fuck youngest brother.

Because of him and a couple other thoughtless narcissists, my grandpa, who was an absolute rock for me in my youth, can't attend. I'll talk to him for as long as I can before things get going, but I wish he could be there. I wish he could see his only great-granddaughter be three. He can not be.

35

u/MyWifeCucksMe At least she's vaccinated๐Ÿ’‰ Oct 01 '22

Not at all a criticism, but reading that, I can't help but think "I'd have kicked out the thoughtless narcissists and let the grandpa attend". I hope you get to do something special with him at a later date!

That's exactly what I was thinking. But all my asshole relatives stopped talking to me years ago. I have nobody in the family left to offend. It's very freeing.

Week 3 of bivalent boosters and crowds are still almost as bad as last fall. Also seeing lots more flu shots. Then again, I had 3 patients come in for their first doses this week (primary series). Job mandates. Better late than never? unfortunately they had to get the original monovalent shot.

15

u/InfiniteAccount4783 Go Fund Yourself ๐Ÿฐ Oct 01 '22

I'm glad to hear there are big crowds of people wanting the bivalent booster where you are. Where I am (Ontario) they were introduced early in September, but the government said that until September 26 they were being restricted to people over 70 and some other vulnerable groups (none of which I belong to). However, I'd heard that demand was not great enough to meet the supply, so when I was passing by a Toronto vaccine clinic a couple of weeks ago, I went in and asked if they were taking walk-ins. They were, and nobody asked me if I was in one of those priority groups... they just looked at my health card, reviewed my vaccination history with me, and gave me the shot. Nice to be able to get one right away, but disheartening to know so many people here are getting more casual about the shots.

11

u/Ragingredblue ๐ŸŽPraise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!๐Ÿ† Oct 01 '22

I think uptake for the most recent booster is worse than for any of the previous boosters. I have no idea why people are growing more and more cavalier about it.

5

u/TorontoTransish ๐ŸŽ & ๐Ÿ Oct 01 '22

I'd like to be able to get one, but my pharmacist said they were still restricted to age 50 and over :(

3

u/InfiniteAccount4783 Go Fund Yourself ๐Ÿฐ Oct 01 '22

Hmm, the Ontario government's official Covid site says that now anyone 18 and over can get a bivalent booster dose as long as it's been at least three months since their last vaccine shot. If I were you, I'd try a different pharmacy - or book an appointment through the provincial vaccine portal.

3

u/TorontoTransish ๐ŸŽ & ๐Ÿ Oct 01 '22

Oh I've just moved so that's good to know to try somewhere else. I'm in America at the minute but when I get back I'll make sure to get it... I was hoping to get it before I left and didn't really have time to ask around

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

Get one in America - all adults are eligible for this one here.

2

u/InfiniteAccount4783 Go Fund Yourself ๐Ÿฐ Oct 02 '22

Agreeing with JustOneQuestionMore - the bivalent booster we have in Ontario triggers a strong immune response against BA.1 and good ones against BA.4 and 5, but the ones that specifically target 4 and 5 have not yet been approved in Canada. You can get them in the States, though.

2

u/TorontoTransish ๐ŸŽ & ๐Ÿ Oct 02 '22

Oh that's helpful to know, thank you to both of you. I'm a bit worried because I had very painful buboes under my arm with the last booster so maybe I'll get it toward the end of the trip just in case I have to immobilize my arm again... hopefully the pharmacist won't look sideways at my Ontario vaccine card, I'm not quite elderly enough to pass for a snowbird lol

16

u/Clickrack Does Norton Antivirus stop covid? Oct 01 '22

Job mandates.

How did their freedoms look? Did they get a sucker lollipop for doing the right thing?

20

u/Rx_EtOH Oct 01 '22

Their reactions were similar to most holdouts: THAT'S IT?!?!

I'm scared of shots is a factor in vaccine hesitancy. Interestingly, the worst populations are:

elderly Indian males - they are terrified, but in their defense most of them have a horrific scar on their left deltoids. I think it's small pox, administered via badger.

The full-sleeve, full-thigh, neckline-visible tattoo crowd. I don't do well with needles! The irony is palpable.

I've had patients come in and declare I'm only here because my wife made me. I'm an anti-vaxer! To which I respond... well, you're not a very good one, are you?

10

u/mothermucca Itโ€™s just a COVID Oct 01 '22

I have seriously wondered if this whole antivax movement is just people being afraid of needles taking any excuse that doesnโ€™t make them look like a wuss.

5

u/ur_sine_nomine Team Mix & Match Oct 01 '22

My girlfriend has done some research (not yet published) on this. About 25% of vaccine refusal is down to fear of needles; the other 75% is ๐Ÿ† ๐Ÿ† ๐Ÿ†.

24

u/terrierhead Oct 01 '22

I was supposed to get my bivalent booster last weekend, but the pharmacyโ€™s computers crashed. On Sunday, I came down with a non-COVID horrible hell bug. Iโ€™m still not well enough to get the shot.

One of my sons got sick first, presumably brought the bug home from school. My whole family masks, but the kids unmask to eat and drink at school.

This means we arenโ€™t protected from Covid at all. I have long COVID already and am worried. Also, Iโ€™m running low on masks and need to find a budget option for N-95โ€™s. Giving a damn about COVID is expensive.

18

u/authentic_mirages Auto-Darwinization Enthusiast Oct 01 '22

Remember that wearing a cloth mask over a non-woven surgical mask improves the fit. If you canโ€™t get N95s or KN95s/KF94s, do the double-masking thing and try hard to increase ventilation/minimize exposure time wherever you go.

My husband felt fine; I felt flu-ish. I took a nap in the afternoon and dreamed that I fished a beaver out of a pond so I could snuggle it and take a nap with it by the pond. When I woke up, my cat was snuggled in my arms. ๐Ÿ˜‚ That was the best nap I've had in ages!

I've felt "off" for the last few days. Slightly tired with a touch of ennui. Could also be the craptastic air quality we're having in my area as well.

Nonetheless, damn glad I got it.

Awesome news out of California! Governor Newsom finally signed #AB2098 into law.

This law requires the CA board of medicine to take action against disinformation doctors.

"It shall constitute unprofessional conduct for a physician and surgeon to disseminate misinformation or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines."

Thanks to all who participated in submitting comments to Newsom. Hopefully they will finally take action against Simone Gold.

13

u/FlippingPossum If your seatbelts work, why do you care about mine? Oct 01 '22

If you need an inhaler, get a spacer! Humidity and illness are my asthma triggers. The spacer makes it so much easier to get the medicine into my lungs.

Second time getting covid as an asthmatic (mild intermittent asthma). I didn't need my inhaler the first time. Need it this time.

Thanks to vaccinations I am resting at home and drinking my coffee. Made homemade cinnamon rolls for the first time.

7

u/FlippingPossum If your seatbelts work, why do you care about mine? Oct 01 '22

They came out pretty good! My sense of taste is pretty wack right now but they are teen approved. I used a packet of dried Instant yeast (quick 45 minute cinnamon rolls recipe).

I normally buy regular dried yeast but ended up with some Instant yeast at the start of the pandemic.

9

u/Ragingredblue ๐ŸŽPraise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!๐Ÿ† Oct 01 '22

I like to use fresh yeast. There is a local deli where I buy it, or ask at a pizza place.

I was supposed to get my flu shot today but they canceled it due to Ian. Our local hospital was having a drive thru flu shot clinic today but it is supposed to rain all day. I can get it at a local pharmacy, but this was so easy last year. They said they might have it next Saturday.

12

u/FlippingPossum If your seatbelts work, why do you care about mine? Oct 01 '22

The drive thru flu shots are so convenient. Bummer to have plans canceled. I got my flu shot at the sane time as my bivalent booster. The Walgreens I went to was not busy.

10

u/jeweltea1 Viruses Don't Read Nietzsche Oct 01 '22

If they don't have the drive-thru next Saturday, I will go to our small, local pharmacy. They are never crowded (especially on weekdays), and they have our information in their computers so minimal paperwork. Unfortunately, they are across town so it takes awhile to go there and back. We had had a lot of issues with our Walgreens.

Why why why do I ever go in the comments section on a YouTube video about COVID, you would have thought I would have learned my lesson now. Every single one of them is some variation on "I never got the [email protected] and I didn't get severe COVID, obviously the [email protected] is poison" regardless of the content of the video. They are either bots, full of shit, or don't understand science or some combination thereof. And of course they are the LOUDEST voices in the comment section. Just don't go, that's my advice.

The idiots can't wait to post this BS everywhere. I recently watched a video from a doctor talking about his experience with being infected with Covid for a 2nd time. He was vaccinated and had one booster.

In the comments at least three idiots said they hadn't taken the vaccine and hadn't been infected. And everyone they knew that had multiple infections had been vaccinated. It's just idiotic.

COVID is so, so not over. Not even close, u/smacksaw.

As of the time I'm editing this comment (9:19 am Eastern Time on October 1), the WHO says that we've had 325,602 new cases worldwide in the last 24 hours.

Within the US alone, as of 9:19 am on October 1, the current daily average COVID rates are 28,484 hospitalizations, 3441 people in the ICU, and 406 deaths. (I got this info from the New York Times COVID map and case counts.)

So, yeah. What u/Cultural-Answer-321 said. It's not over.

I have a family member whoโ€™s going through what sounds very much like what happens to HCA nominees, medically. Weโ€™re not closeโ€”either physically or emotionallyโ€”but we used to be. I doubt they were vaxed, and theyโ€™re a lifelong smoker. Thereโ€™s nothing I can do from here and Iโ€™m not handling it well. I havenโ€™t told anybody in my current life becauseโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know. I canโ€™t handle it? Iโ€™m not sure anyone cares? Something like that.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '22

I'm so sorry. Can you speak with your family member, tell them how much they meant to you? Maybe find other family members to commiserate with?

15

u/authentic_mirages Auto-Darwinization Enthusiast Oct 01 '22

thank you. I donโ€™t think they themselves are capable of speech at this point. I really should be reaching out to family members, but Iโ€™ve been putting it off. Iโ€™m in a really different time zone so itโ€™s easy to say โ€œIโ€™ll answer this message later when theyโ€™re awakeโ€ and then forget to do it and it just builds up. Should schedule a Zoom call, but thatโ€™s not something I can do without alerting other people in my house. I thought โ€œif I can just make it through this work week Iโ€™ll fix everything over the weekendโ€ but now itโ€™s the weekend and Iโ€™m still stalling

I don't know. It's a funny thought, though! LOL!

5

u/IneedaWIPE Oct 01 '22

Like mansplaining which is a term used when men try to act like an authority on a certain subject when explaining it to a female thinking that the female knows nothing about it just because she's female...like how to BBQ.

8

u/Merithay Oct 01 '22 edited Oct 05 '22

The original inspiration for the mansplaining term had an extra layer of irony โ€“ the man was explaining something to a woman who is an expert in the subject (unlike him). Was recommending her to read a book which actually she had written. Another person present in that exchange said thatโ€™s her book, she wrote it, and had to repeat it three or four times before he heard her. (Turned out he had only heard about the book, not read it.)

So, top mansplaining is when the man not only explains something to a female, but when she is an expert in the subject while he is not.

Imagine a meme so irresponsible, it encourages people to put themselves and their community at risk.

I was diagnosed with cancer the last week in February after a pet scan and later a biopsie. Since March 8th of 2020 I have stayed in my apartment other than to go pay my rent, do my laundry ( wee hours of the morning), dump my garbage ( same time) and get my mail (same time). Always masked, now using only KN95 masks. I'm an ex smoker (12+ years now) and I'm 66 so that was 2 reasons to not be out and about if something to do is not a necessity. I even began using Instacart for groceries that March and continue to do so. My meds are delivered every 90 days right to my door. My Oncologist and Primary still do not want me to have any of the boosters though I had gotten my 2 shot Pfizer vaccination in April of 2021 ( during my pre cancer days). I'm now doing immunotherapy every 3 weeks for the next year, this began a month after after my aggressive 7 week-5 days of radiation and every Thursday Chemo was finished. I watch the Herman Cain Reddit postings because it is a GREAT reminder of just how many idiots treat Covid like it has ended or smugly convey 'See, it was all BS' while they had continued to put at risk friends and family and unknowns they came in contact with.

Have your providers considered giving you Evusheld? Dr. Griffin on TWIV regularly talks about it for immunocompromised patients, last time was 8/5/2022:

Got a bit of a headache after my most recent bout of fever and sore throat, but that's probably from me not getting enough sleep.

You might want to test for covid ;-)

u/Violet_Nightshade Oct 02 '22

Already did last week. Negative.

I'm really pro spreading the info to anyone who will listen that What the Mayans were predicting for 2012 was a new Age beginning. "The Dawning of the Age of Aquarius" 1975 explains this. It means we're moving into an age of progress & evolution as a species. People I speak to are often skeptical, I don't fucking blame them. /looks around at all this.

That being said, I have this weird infinite patience and belief, Ive been been replying that "it'll happen" lol. But I feeeel it too.

So this morn, I'm working w a client and I commented something like "idk about you but people seem nicer" and we discussed it may have had to do w during lock down lots of people reevaluated and took real stock to find what was most important. I know I did

Then it struck me - Holy shit this is the thing! This is the Aquarius!

Don't believe me if you want but we're getting nicer and treating each other better. I'm really happy I still have my unwavering faith in humanity (also fuck some humans though)

"A preliminary version (not yet peer-reviewed) posted in 2020 was one of the first to show that the virus that causes COVID-19 can infect brain cells, especially astrocytes. It also broke new ground by describing alterations in the structure of the cortex, the most neuron-rich brain region, even in cases of mild COVID-19."

Two years seems like a long time for an article not to be peer reviewed.

I thought that strange as well....having not come across much info on this topic, I thought better to put the info out there without comment. Hoping someone might have seen some related info.

There are a lot of well informed people around here.

Don't worry! DeathSantis has it all under control!

I'm actually shocked that there are still healthcare workers left in Florida.

My immunocompromised friend is planning to fly with his family to go on a short vacation on the west coast of the US. Short flight, just 3 hours in the air. They all mask and are vaccinated and boosted (most of them got a booster about one week ago).

I feel like he has a large-percentage chance of catching covid from this. Am I wrong to think this is a very bad idea? I'm trying to talk him out of going and I fear that makes me a jerk. Are my fears overblown?

He finally caught it a couple of months ago and he didn't feel well for a couple of weeks, coughing and tired, but didn't have to go to the hospital.

u/jeweltea1 Viruses Don't Read Nietzsche Oct 02 '22

I don't think it is a good idea either but I am not sure you can do much about it, unfortunately.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

I definitely can't do anything. I was just hoping I wasn't being totally out of touch and wrong to not have shut up about this yet. He is very patient with me and I do think I have finally said my peace (he flies out tomorrow so I'll definitely keep my thoughts to myself at that point).

u/Cultural-Answer-321 Deadpilled ๐Ÿ’€ Oct 02 '22

Even vaccinated, you do NOT want to get infected more than once.

Read this series of tweets. It's.. scary. Very scary.

Mom is in her 70s, took 2 vacations this years. Both times she was masked on the flights to and from her destinations. Nothing happened. Got her 4th booster in late May. So mask up on the flight, get boosted before going. If previous past patterns hold, you'll start seeing more sick folks in November.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

Yay! Thank you! I'm going to think of your mom instead of biting my nails worrying

I'm very curious to see what will happen in November. We're not exactly at a low point now, so maybe that means that there have been enough recent infections to have enough temporary immunity out there to prevent a big spike. Or maybe this is just the shoulder to what will be another big, omicron-like curve:
