There was never a moral panic about kids being peer pressured into taking experimental drugs. There was a panic about kids experimenting with drugs. These are wholly different things. The issue was never that drugs weren't adequately tested yet, it's that street drugs are a risk because of their illegal status. There is danger in acquiring them and danger in using them, a lot of the time a result of what the state will do to you if they catch you.

Vaccines that have been through the testing protocols and approved by medical boards and agencies worldwide, made in a controlled environment in a medical laboratory and administered under supervision of a medical professional isn't 'taking experimental drugs'.

I rate this a

  • Fearmongering about loss of freedom / totalitarian state meme

  • Downplaying covid meme

  • Sowing distrust in science / promoting vaccine conspiracy theories meme

There was never a moral panic about kids being peer pressured into taking experimental drugs.

Yeah, even the initial meme is nonsensical, and would only be shared by a semi-literate idiot.

Given that, this is kind of like shooting already-dead fish in a barrel.

13

u/ConsiderationWest587 Nov 26 '22

Sounds like you weren't cool enough to be peer-pressured into drugs lol

9

u/maxreddit Nov 26 '22

Not to mention if there was some sort of horrible plague going around, and the only way to stop it was to do cocaine? Cocaine use would skyrocket among people who decried it before, because overusing cocaine has horrible side effects, but they're still not as bad as dying.

86

u/Lost-Citron-1099 Nov 26 '22

Recreational. We were taught not to be peer pressured to use recreational drugs. As far as I’m aware meth, coke and heroin are not experimental, not that vaccines are either.

Plenty of people

  1. Illegally self-medicate with legit drugs like Alprazolam, Adderall, etc.

  2. Use counterfeit versions of legit drugs.

  3. Trade and use unknown drugs ("I'll trade three Bumblebees for two Black-and-Reds.")

4

In my day five bumblebees was a quarter.

How many people took that MD’s advice to not get vaccinated because he’s a doctor? How many deaths did he cause?

71

u/FailResorts Nov 26 '22 Starry

Also the “I don’t trust medical professionals anymore”. My sister in Christ, you refused to get the vaccine, social distance, or wear a mask. Did you ever trust a medical professional?

36

u/C3POdreamer Nov 26 '22

Or when they di, it's Senator Rand Paul an eye doctor who created his own board vs. Dr. Fauci, an immunologist and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

19

u/maxreddit Nov 26 '22

Seriously, Fauci has decades of experience in infectious diseases and even saw through the AIDS crisis under """ St. Ronny""" and they'll still trust an eye doctor who isn't actually an eye doctor or just some non-schooled anonymous malcontent on the internet with the spelling and grammar skills of a heavily concussed kindergartener over him!

7

u/doctormalbec Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

I got my PhD in immunology in 2012. Throughout my time in grad school (and before and after, of course)l, he was always viewed as an absolute expert. I saw him speak as a keynote speaker at several conferences between 2007-2012. It saddens me to see him discredited by people who didn’t even know who he was until the pandemic.

5

u/jewdy09 Nov 27 '22

Fauci would fit in my pocket, but God damn does he give me a lady boner. Just thinking about him working ~90 hours a week in 2020 to get the job done and how the rubes want to repay him for that and his lifetime of keeping Americans safe absolutely boils my blood. You’d think the fact that their lord and savior Turnip didn’t fire him would suggest maybe he isn’t the Marvel Universe villain they are trying to portray him to be.

Seventy percent of the U.S. has had the original vaccine, but the antibody protection wanes over 3-6 months. Plus the virus has mutated to escape the vaccine protection, but only 11% of the population has gotten the bivalent vaccine, according to the CDC.

In what world does “natural immunity” fend off a lethal respiratory virus? Are people so far gone that they don’t understand that Fauci’s specialty is, in fact, immunology, and he’s considered to be among the world’s best? People choosing to disregard established science because they saw a Mercola video just astound me. Never gamble with your health. It’s always a FAFO.

29

u/Fabulous-Mud-9114 Team Moderna Nov 26 '22

Look at any of their memes about "natural immunity" and you will very quickly see their understanding of germ theory stopped around 1st or 2nd grade.

They think of the immune system as a muscle that gets stronger after every workout rather than a fallible biological system with strengths and weaknesses for everyone.

And it's not like if you explained this to them, that they would understand. These people are extremely closed minded, especially if it's not another member of the tribe telling them this.

So, to them, Fauci is bad because he said stuff that ran counter to the Gospel of Donald Trump, who had already said before mid-March 2020 that COVID was a "Democrat hoax just like Russia Russia" and it'll "go away" like magic.

22

u/CatsPolitics 🦆 Nov 26 '22

The main problem is that actual science isn’t easily “dumbed down” but snake oil is. Plus American consumers have been primed for years that “natural/organic” is best and there’s zero regulation on claims made about vitamins & supplements. Combine that with the “demoncrats are baby killers” trope plus ongoing anti-vaxx beliefs, and it’s a perfect storm for ignorance to thrive. Well, at least those taking ivermectin will die worm-free.

8

u/GnarlyNarwhalNoms Nov 27 '22

Especially immunology. The immune system is ridiculously complex. That's why treatments for autoimmune diseases are still sort of blunt instruments. Explaining the immune system to laypeople makes explaining quantum mechanics seem straightforward by comparison.

2

u/Lomak_is_watching Nov 27 '22

Another issue I hear too often - the guidance had changed, so experts must not know what they're talking about. Face masks being a prime example, along with vaccine intervals, effective periods, etc.

I respect experts, and people in general, who can absorb new info and have the courage to learn and change their minds. Covid has been a fluid situation requiring different actions at different times. Those changes aren't a gotcha moment. I wonder if those stubborn type thinkers still treat burns with butter.

8

u/LM0821 Nov 26 '22

Ironically, the immune system develops up to around age 8, about the same age their overall comprehension developed to.

17

u/Sea-Employment2323 Nov 26 '22

I LITERALLY had a nurse at a hospital say that she had “natural immunity” from working with COVID patients. I think about her all the time…

13

u/CatsPolitics 🦆 Nov 26 '22

Before the pandemic my doctor’s office had a nurse who not only refused an annual flu shot but wouldn’t wear a mask (per clinic policy) around patients. I asked my doctor about it (also he was the head of the clinic) and he said he could do nothing about it, so I fired my doctor. I wonder if that nurse is still employed at that clinic.

9

u/Sea-Employment2323 Nov 26 '22

If it had been someone in a Drs office I went to… they would be fired from my care 1000%

8

Well people are not getting any smarter. Gonna do what they’re gonna do and, I guess they’re willing to give their lives for their “freedom”. I’d rather a mask and the vax, but each to his own.

I haven’t been haunting this sub in a while, but it only takes a few of these to make you sad and angry and confused and just maybe hate religion. Still at 6,000 dead or so per month. Please help people get their vaccinations.

Explain to me your justification for these abominable posts? Also, how does it differ from Orwell's "the two minutes hate?"

u/maxreddit Nov 26 '22

Because that was hate, this is catharsis.

So you thought you’d venture out of the conspiracy subs and show us the light by replying to dozens of comments on here?

You do realize that these "abominable posts" feature the deceased person's own FaceBook history, right? If there's hate in them, it doesn't come from the person doing the screen shots.
