I barely graduated high school and I never went to college and these people never cease to amaze me how f****** stupid they are. Read a goddamn book or two. Watch a few science videos on YouTube subscribe to a few fact-based science-based channels on YouTube and you will learn so much. At this point I'm surprised they don't just stop breathing.
114
u/mudduck2 Nov 28 '22
I have long advocated that too many people don’t take time to thank their selected deity that breathing is an autonomic response.

To this day my mother is convinced that Coca-Cola+aspirin=roofie. She also swears you can get pregnant from a toilet seat and that “good girls don’t get STDs.”.

u/gimmeflowersdude Nov 28 '22

We no longer speak after she didn’t believe I had COVID in March 2020 so IDGAF about her toilets.

Well, to some degree the last one is true, unless they have a unfaithful spouse. The rest of course is total bullshit.
9
u/MathematicianFew5882 Team Moderna Nov 28 '22
Plenty of good girls don’t get VD. Seems like she meant that none of them ever get it. But it also depends on what they good at, and who (if any) they’re doing it with.

u/Shamadruu Nov 28 '22
Not all sexually transmitted diseases are transmitted solely through sex either. Many can also be transmitted through any kind of close contact or contamination through body fluids.
5
u/hockeymass Nov 28 '22
Being a “good” person is not correlated even a little bit with extramarital sex.
39
u/DoomRyGuy Nov 28 '22
Unfortunately they won't. These people have become accustomed to only getting their information in short, quick, easy to digest formats. AKA, Facebook and Twitter.

Bold of you to assume these fuckers can read (at least past a second-grade level).

I couldn't explain it to a second grader. But I could explain it to someone with only a second grade reading level.

A library strategy I suggest to exchange students is to take the same Dewey decimal from the adult stacks & look in the children section. Get the kiddy overview in simple English, then tackle the adult book

You'd be surprised. I know people with college degrees that spout this shit. They're mostly retired but spend all their time scrolling Facebook and watching Fox News. That becomes too their entire worldview and they can't see anything beyond their own echo chamber.
23
u/ArkieRN Nov 28 '22
Two days ago I read a survey and the response showed that over 50% of adults in America had not read a single book in the previous year. That boggles my mind.

Sad to say, I am one as well.
Busy, no bookstore within 10 miles, local library no bigger than an average house.
In my defense, for decades I was reading 2-3 books every week.
8
u/LadyReika Nov 28 '22
I'm fortunate to have a decent library system, but I love my Kindle and Kindle Unlimited sub. Maybe try that if possible? Don't even have to buy a Kindle, the Kindle app for computers and smartphones is free.
6
u/Zephyr-5 Nov 28 '22
Audiobooks can be a great substitute as you can listen to them while doing chores, exercising, or driving somewhere.
7
u/Sure-Debate-464 Nov 28 '22
This so much. I am an over the road truck driver and have almost 500 audiobooks. I also download audiobooks from my library so I don't have to buy every single one from audible.

u/bopbop_nature-lover HCW - Verified Nov 28 '22
I am book free as well. I read books fairly extensively in my liberal arts courses but then 15 years of professional training onto practice led me to short form materials with abstracts, materials and methods, results and discussions. Very focussed and not much plot. I think my ADHD allows me 20 pages tops. Long reviews can be a slog. I have 400 PDFs on key and interesting Covid-19 articles -->Nature Medicine, JAMA, NEJM, BMJ...
Photography. And news, I devour world and science news. Short stuff all.

I have no idea why you posted that WCW poem. I hope it brings you joy in some way. I loath that poem more than any other work in the Universe. For my money, Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings is only the second worst poet in the universe.

That place was a godsend to me when a combination of middle age, carpal tunnel and tiny hands made reading physical books difficult.
2
u/1stMammaltowearpants Team Moderna Nov 28 '22
There are many ways to get e-books nowadays. I get them from my local library and from my $10/month Kindle subscription. The Kindle subscription is great for people who want to read more.
3
u/Cultural-Answer-321 Deadpilled 💀 Nov 28 '22
I'm old school. I like to read the dust cover synopsis and flip through the pages before I buy or borrow a book. Reviews are meaningless to me.
Just like I will buy nothing online without actually examining a physical version of it first.
2
u/1stMammaltowearpants Team Moderna Nov 29 '22
Yeah, I prefer dead-tree books myself and I have a good sized collection. But with the e-reader and the unlimited subscription I can try out lots of books. It's not as good as smelling the actual book and feeling the actual paper, but the convenience and the huge catalog are game changers.

Unfortunately there are many college-educated people out there who’ve fallen prey to fake news, conspiracies, and misinformation online. If anything, it’s exposed that not everyone goes to college or pursues further education to learn; some just see it as a requirement to fill up their resumé with.
2
u/xadiant Nov 28 '22
You want to learn and become smart. On the other hand they are proud to be stupid.
2
Nov 29 '22
This right here!
Some of the smartest people I know don't have college degrees. But they read a lot. They watch documentaries. They're curious about the world. They like finding out how things work.
I have some family members who are very well educated but you'd never know it because spout off the stupidest shit because they listen to Fox News and scroll Facebook all day. At least one of my family members thinks Italian satellites changed votes to help Biden win.

On a par with an anti-vaxxer I saw recently, espousing that being asked to have the covid jab to help protect people around them not just themselves is like being asked to cut off his own balls to protect others from testicular cancer. Ffs.

I scrolled and did not see this so I guess it’s worth letting people know:
Condoms do NOT protect against the spread of genital herpes and/or warts.
ETA: people should still engage in safer sex practices but I wanted to let people know in case they think a partner experiencing an outbreak won’t be contagious if they’ve got a condom on.
2
u/The_Patriot A concerned redditor reached out to them about me Nov 28 '22
If only there were some kind of preventative for HPV...
5
u/The_Crystal_Thestral Nov 28 '22
Vaccine or not, HPV is pretty widespread in the population. People should should be aware of these things so they can make the best decisions when faced with a choice to proceed with an act or not. I’ve met far too many people who did not know that they could still contract or spread herpes/warts even with a condom.

Condoms don't prevent herpes transmission. Just for everyone's information.
3
u/Professional_Low_646 Nov 28 '22
Apart from moving to a mountain cave as soon as you are born and living your life in complete isolation, is there ANY way to prevent Herpes transmission?
3
u/KakarotMaag Nov 28 '22
Certainly there are ways to prevent either 1 or 2 genitally (mostly knowing about it and antivirals). Orally, I mean, it's kind of just a fact of life. I believe I read that 80% of people have it by 60 or so? Really disappointing that there aren't vaccines.
Valacyclovir is pretty good and, I'm not a doctor and you should ask your doctor about it but, afaik can have a prophylactic effect.
