Too worn out from the holidays and an erratic schedule to cook. Went to a totally fun Geek Craft Show full of cool weird art, D&D sets, jewelry and just weird things. Stopped at a friends' place for beer, then came home and steamed a couple frozen tamales. Now enjoying an Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter and listening to the Sunday Soul program on [KEXP](www.kexp.org). Hope you all are having a great Sunday evening too!

It totally was! My wife and I do most of our x-mas shopping at local craft fairs, maker's markets, and street fairs. At this one she saw an artist who does a lot of Lord of the Rings artwork, and she asked me to buy the LOTR 2023 calendar for her. After a conversation with the artist, the artist said after twelve years she's burned out on LOTR art, so she's selling her original prints for cheap. And that's how I ended up spending a bunch of money on original LOTR fan art for my wife today.
I also bought some "Adulting Awards" fridge magnets for a friend. They're gold stars that read:
- Cleaned the cat litter box today
- Folded laundry today
- Wore a bra today
Gonna sneakily stick them on her fridge when we cat-sit for her when she's out of town later this month.

Smothered pork steaks, but since I cut up the steaks I like to call it Smothered & Deconstructed.
Take a couple of pork steaks, bone them and cut them up into roughly 1" pieces. Slice up half of a large onion and half a dozen white or cremini mushrooms in the manner of your choosing, and crush a few cloves of garlic and mince them up. Sauté the pork on medium-high heat in olive oil until browned, then remove from the pan. Sauté the onions and mushroom until softened and slightly browned. Add the garlic and cook for a minute, then add a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup and a can of water or broth, and deglaze the pan. Return the pork to the pan, and bring the mixture up to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and allow the mixture to cook for twenty to thirty minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
If you use an Instant Pot or some other kind of multi-cooker, follow the same methodology, but instead of simmering set the cooker to pressure-cook for 15-20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the pork steak.

Also, for all the hateful gibberish they spouted, there is one thing amongst the copypasta I have to side with... the whole "take your mask off when you get to the table" really does seem like health & safety theater, especially now.

22

AR-15s weren't invented yet. 1956 designed, 1959 in production.
That said, back 1984 Springsteen's Born in the USA album has lyrics in "My Hometown" about the gun violence virca 1968.
10
u/ColetteThePanda Nov 28 '22
I'm sure there's also shades of a talking I heard on the commentary track from The Wall a thousand years ago:
"It's not that there's more now, they were ever there... but the news reports about it have sky-rocketed."
I think they were talking about child abuse, but maybe some of that applies to this too?
21
u/SeattleResident Nov 28 '22
Handgun ownership. Each decade the amount of handguns purchased has risen. Back in the 40s and 50s rifles and shotguns were still the main firearms purchased for homes. Now that has flipped where 82% of gun owners have a handgun. We harp on the assault rifles but handguns commit most shootings in America and kill the most kids by a significant amount.
So you have millions of little death sticks a person can conceal in their backpack along with a lot more stimuli coming at kids from every direction with the rise of the internet.
5
u/witteefool Nov 28 '22
I don’t know about the stimuli and internet bit. Smacks too much of “video games are causing violence.”
3
u/ColetteThePanda Nov 28 '22
Video games does seem like an easy target. I don't wanna harp on the old desensitization line. But maybe... there's a bit of disconnection?
As in, the further we get from the last major world wars (or Vietnam & Korea), the more of an abstraction it becomes. Gun violence isn't that thing that messed up your dad or granddad because their buddies got blown away overseas. Gun violence is that thing that happens on XBox, etc.
6
u/SaintUlvemann Team Bivalent Booster Nov 28 '22
The bits in the safety theater copypasta about minimizing contact with surfaces also aren't the absolute worst I've ever seen, we've known for some time that surfaces aren't a major covid exposure route at all.
Granted, it's not bad to have less indirect surface-to-surface contact with people, it's not brainwashing, it's just the kind of fastidious where the benefits are small enough as to be easily overshadowed by any poor choices you're making on more-impactful processes: don't spend an hour to save a minute, and all that.
3
u/witteefool Nov 28 '22
Also, for a long time we didn’t know that it wasn’t surface contact spread. So it makes sense that that simple precaution was implemented early on.
3
u/witteefool Nov 28 '22
Yeah, health and safety theater was absolutely a thing. Which makes it hard to convince skeptics to do things that actually work!
Reminder for everyone to mask up again as people gather for the holidays and spread (1) COVID, (2) the flu, (3) RSV around!

10
u/Special_Wishbone_812 Nov 28 '22
So Cash Cab dressed up as Chauvin that day, took a bunch of trainees and coworkers out who definitely did not realize it was not Chauvin, killed a guy, and got away with it. This is as close as she would get to admitting George Floyd was murdered. Because a cop wouldn’t do that, a reality tv guy pretending to be a cop with three other actual cops would. She doesn’t deserve to be on this rollercoaster from he’ll
She saw a shitload of commercials saying the rollercoaster was scary.
She witnessed a lot of people who rode the rollercoaster, and they confirmed that it was scary.
She went to the amusement park where a lot of people were likely to ride the scary rollercoaster.
She rode the rollercoaster and she screamed her ass off because it is scary. She hated the rollercoaster. People that were riding at the same time all witnessed her screaming during the obviously scary parts, but they noticed how weird it was that she was screaming about how the rollercoaster isn’t scary but also screaming about how much she was looking forward to the ride being over so she can enjoy the rest of the park.
But then a year later…
She went BACK to the amusement park and again rode the scary rollercoaster, so again she screamed her ass off because the rollercoaster was even more scary this time, even though she rode it before and knew it was scary. This time she screamed so much she lost her voice.
Her loved ones feel it’s unfair that she screamed so much she lost her voice after the second time she rode the scary rollercoaster.
