I think this is the darkest humor in Rick and Morty by far. There are other dark parts that just aren't humorous, like Rick buildind a suicide machine for himself but getting so drunk he rolls out of it by mistake. However this whole plot comes so perfectly full circle. Even if you stand up to the awfulness of the machine and rebel against it, the machine just takes that and incorporates it into the next iteration. It is literally inescapable, and if you think you made it you're just living another illusion.
Reminds me of that Black Mirror episode where everyone lives only to consume social media. One guy realizes the futility of trying to become popular in a vapid world and takes action against the system. The system then promotes him as some kind of conspiracy theory channel and he gets super famous, and he sells out because he just wanted to be living the good life. He gets to rant all day and nothing changed.
That’s exactly the black mirror episode I was thinking of when I read your first paragraph. The system being highly adaptive is pretty unnerving, it’s not some 80s movie where one big story by a rouge journalist toppled corruption. Fun.
I agree though it’s definitely up there as far as dark ones go. Watching morty lose his “save” with the full relationship he had or planetina were sad moments but probably not as dark. Maybe the implications of the planetina one for being an extremist to try to save the planet. Idk
I’m not sure actually, I’m the first time I heard it it sounded like Sam Elliot lol but it is super familiar. Maybe they just got someone from a Chevy commercial lol
