No prisoner should ever be asked to work for less than minimum wage. Anything less is slavery.
The idea that incarcerated firefighters can do woodland firefighting but the minute they're out of jail they're ineligible because they can't pass the background check doesn't pass the stink of corruption test.
If we want enough hands on these fires, it's time to stop treating former prisoners with relevant experience like second class citizens and welcome them back into society. If we don't, we can't be surprised when as the song says they go back, Jack, and do it again. What other choice did we really give them?
