Tbh i think they are trying to avoid another Tehran US embassy situation that happened during the Iranian revolution.. It would be a global embarrassment plus the Taliban would not hesitate to kill US officials and affiliates. This time I understand why troops are being sent in; however I agree the Afghan war should have never happened and everything we are seeing unfold now is 100% the West’s fault

It does make sense.

Military is there to help out civilians and other non-military personnel. The 3000 troops won't need anyone to assist them in leaving, they will be leaving with the personnel.

I really don't understand OP's logic. Do you want the US to stay in Afghanistan? Do you want civilians to be murdered?

If you want to get out of a country you should've never been in, this is the proper way to do it.

Sometimes this sub can be ignorant, but this one tops them all. Troops are not the only kind of personnel. Local Afghan translators would be considered personnel. People who the Taliban has directly threatened and will be killed as soon as the Taliban takes over.

It's not imperialism to suggest the US should have had a proper exit strategy. Leaving overnight leaves a power vacuum which causes far more harm than leaving in a way which considers the Afghani people.

Weve been hearing this one for 2 decades...

Oh no I 100% agree this line of reasoning has been used to justify staying indefinitely. I'm talking idealistically.

I believe this was a win-win for American imperialism though. If the purpose is to destabilize the region in order to keep players in the area from being able to feed and house themselves properly, then there's far less resistance when it comes to defending strategic global positions and resources.

Except all that's gonna happen is China or Russia will move in and take the role of the US. If the US had empowered the Afghani people they would be more resilient against another imperialist power. America gets nothing out of this, and all Biden gets is optics from the liberals.

While it is stupid and we need to be out of that country, there are a lot of different types jobs in the military, and the 3000 being sent to aide in the evacuation of the others are likely more combat focused or pilots to fly everyone out.

I assume it is soldiers going to guard office staff, translators and plumbers etc as they get out.

Exactly. We had already pulled out the combat troops and just left diplomatic personnel and some other office type people on the ground. Now that it looks like it will be a hasty evaluation for all of those personnel we are sending in some combat troops to guard them and help with the evacuation. There’s probably some logistics experts, truck drivers, pilots and medical personnel as well. Most people don’t realize how many support personnel it takes to have 1000 infantry soldiers on the ground.

Yeah, exactly. The reasoning behind the tweet is just ignorant and makes the person look stupid. Plenty of things to be mad about, no need to make things up or give fodder to those who disagree.

The US needs to just get out of Afghanistan completely no more just shifting the troop numbers around.

Hasn't opium production skyrocketed under US occupation? Coincidentally at the same time as a huge opioid epidemic in the US?

I don't think the Taliban are very keen on opium and drugs. The Taliban will be burning fields and beheading users soon enough, in my opinion. But yes Afghanistan will be libya, syria or iraq 2.

u/camo6 18d ago

it is a well known fact the taliban cultivate poppies and export opium/heroin to fund their cause

u/nbenj1990 18d ago

True but it would seem not quite to the same extent as the Americans.
