I was in an elevator with her last week! The annual national Archaeology/Classics conference was in the same hotel. Shared elevator rides with Miss Mauritius, Miss Haïti, and Miss Singapore, too

788

u/yellowwalks Jan 13 '23

That sounds like an interesting conférence!

487

u/Expert-Parking1925 Jan 13 '23

Whenever it’s in New Orleans, it is! Classicists & archaeologists are a small enough discipline that we usually share a conference site: this year with Miss Universe and a fertilizer conference, last time in New Orleans (2015) with a biker convention, one time elsewhere with a guns & gators show.

Some people in my profession hate the conference, but I usually love it. One of my former students described it to me as “Classics Mecca”

Classicists & archaeologists ... Miss Universe and a fertilizer conference

what a diverse collection

22

u/Real-Lake2639 Jan 13 '23

Add the FBI, ATF, CIA, and NSA undercover at the fertilizer conference and the place must've been a real party.

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AN; EMBEUHGAHHH

33

u/gregsting Jan 13 '23

As a french speaker, it's pretty hard to know how to pronounce that in the US, as we are used to pronounce it our way. Same goes for Pizza or ordering a Coke. But when we hear you ordering a croissant, it's revenge time.

It's as easy for me to say croissant as it is for you to say mirror. I just can't prononce that word. My tongue has no idea what to do with itself in that situation lol

I use Gboard on my phone, which lets you have multiple languages programmed to autocorrect at once. Mine right now, for example, says EN•ES•FR on it, because it will auto-detect if I'm using one of those three languages and suggest spellings from it.

But a lot of the time, it messes up and autocorrects to French when I'm typing in English. I used to be annoyed by that, but as of right now I'm going to think of it as "typing with a French accent". Thank you for the laugh!

I love this. Nothing wrong with coming from a hard working family.

1.1k

u/Frodo612 Jan 13 '23

Exactly this, I remember once telling a girl how I worked at a hotel at reception and then washed dishes sometimes for extra money and she was super embarrassed. She said I should stop talking. There is nothing wrong with doing that, especially since I was on a working holiday in another country and the whole experience was wonderful to me..

140

u/SpecialDot Jan 13 '23

I'm planning to do a working holiday in Japan, which country did you go to?

81

u/Frodo612 Jan 13 '23

The UK.

67

u/MuttonDressedAsGoose Jan 13 '23

I was wondering if maybe there was some cultural thing at play here. Nope. She's just weird.

37

u/Lucidream- Jan 13 '23

No no, that's actually upper middle and upper class English culture. They look down on people who do that kind of work.

A girl had invited me over to her house and we were talking about my trip in the UK, her sister was there and I think she was embarrassed that she would invite someone over who once years before had washed dishes. At that stage of being in that girls house I was qualified attorney working at one of the best law firms in my city.

26

u/JuniorKing9 Jan 13 '23

You’ve gone a long way, and you should be proud of yourself. I’m from the UK and I’m ashamed of this girl lmao. A lot of us work in those jobs nobody else wants, heck, my family are all dairy farmers and I sew clothes for people, sometimes you don’t have a choice and that’s okay. Good job Frodo :)

I relate to this so much. For almost two years I worked the night shift at Walmart from 4pm - 1am unloading trucks in the back room, and would go to school during the day. I’m now a scientist working for a Fed government agency in DC, but still tell people that working at Walmart taught me a lot and to this day those guys back there with me were some of the most awesome people to work with. The work sucked, but I enjoyed the people I worked with very much; there were so many characters there.

No one should ever feel ashamed for working hard to earn an honest living, in fact it’s commendable.

Also. Poor hard working families can produce beautiful children as well, she’s absolutely stunning and humble as well

697

u/SkootchDown Jan 13 '23

This right here. I’m average looking, I suppose, as is my husband. But our kids? They’re all SO beautiful. We laugh about it all the time, “How the hell did THAT happen?? It’s like they hit the genetic gene pool lottery!”

388

u/murderosa Jan 13 '23

People whove met my parents and sibling have said ‘wow your family is so beautiful!! What happened to you?’

246

u/mommak2011 Jan 13 '23

My ex had two great looking parents. He and his sister, however, got every unattractive trait each parent carried. Not like....horrendous looking kids, but still not what you would expect from the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles.... definitely came from both parents, but just like.... someone picked out every less than gorgeous trait from both parents, and assembled them into children.

66

u/Rapunzel10 Jan 13 '23

Lol that's me. My parents looked great in their day (still do), my mom especially was stunning. Several of my cousins have been approached by modeling agents. We don't live in LA or whatever we live in the middle of nowhere. My one cousin had to practically beat agents off with a stick, I kid you not she could be Anne Hathaway's sister. Me? Nah, I didn't get any of that. I got nice hair but thats it. My brother got my moms looks and nice hair. Not fair lol

Meanwhile my husband got the opposite. His parents are pretty average but he's very handsome. He somehow looks like the best version of both his parents. Genetics are crazy

114

u/maddking Jan 13 '23

I came up with this theory years ago when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got married that there was such a thing as “peak pretty” and that beyond that the genetic pool just resets the game.

142

u/AGirlHasNoName19 Jan 13 '23

Wow, really? To me their kid looks like someone cherry picked the best traits of each parent to make the perfect face. I completely respect your opinion though.

55

u/EshayAdlay420 Jan 13 '23

Damn it's like they did the fusion dance, which is technically accurate I guess.

55

u/PHRESH21 Jan 13 '23

I will now refer to sex time with my wife as the fusion dance. She will have zero idea what its referencing but I will be so happy.

19

u/Cyrano_Nose Jan 13 '23

And as gorgeous as both of them are, lets be honest, either or both might have had some work done to correct minor flaws that otherwise might stick out amongst the perfection.

17

u/mypeeholeneedsme Jan 13 '23

Maybe. But if you’ve seen pics of either from their youth, you might feel differently. They’re outliers.

I feel this way too 🥲 like I see the ugliest parents with the most attractive offspring and then I look at my parents, who were very very attractive, and then I’m just like 👹

I feel like I got the worst traits mentally and physically from both my parents and it sucks (meanwhile my little sister got all their best attributes).

32

u/meowparade Jan 13 '23

Same here, I got anxiety, depression, bad skin, and ADHD genes, while my brother got the gifted, good skin, good hair, and overall attractiveness genes.

14

u/algnonamoose Jan 13 '23

Same here with the ADHD I feel your pain 🥺 I was bullied and subject to abuse in my life thanks to being “neurodivergent” and now I have trauma too. My sister of course does not and everyone loves her lol.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/2017hayden Jan 13 '23

It has a lot more to do with exactly what traits you inherit than your parents level of attractiveness. If your dad has a massive nose and a weak chin and your mom has bad skin and terrible teeth but you inherit his great teeth and good complexion along with your mothers jawline and nose you could very well turn out looking pretty good. Sometimes good traits don’t look so good when combined with other traits that aren’t great or just don’t go well with them, so ugly people can have gorgeous kids and gorgeous people can have ugly kids. It’s mostly about what features you happen to inherit and how well they match eachother.

12

u/loganed3 Jan 13 '23

Same here I'm the ugliest in the family by a landslide.

6

u/blueeyebling Jan 13 '23

It probably costs less in Thailand

23

u/The-unicorn-republic Jan 13 '23

Adjusted for average income and purchasing power it's probably about the same for the people who live in Thailand

16

u/Ok_Sink_7572 Jan 13 '23

As an American in Thailand, you are partially correct. average income is certainly less here, but cost of goods and services is also significantly cheaper, so average Purchasing power is greater in Thailand than US. Cosmetic surgery is absolutely cheaper here than in the US, in both absolute and relative terms.

17

u/DeuceyBoots Jan 13 '23

For any others that wanted to re-read the book but don’t have it with them anymore. https://youtu.be/Z3cmddZh6t8

32

u/KnowsIittle Jan 13 '23

I was not a fan of that book. I understand it's core message but at the same time it was saying you can't be special and have to give away parts of yourself to adjust to society's expectations instead of just being allowed to be you.

17

u/DeuceyBoots Jan 13 '23

I re-read the book through this YouTube video. I don’t have the book anymore.

https://youtu.be/Z3cmddZh6t8

I think the core message was more about wealth/possessions and sharing them with the world. The last page of the book has the message, “His most prized possessions had been given away, yet he was very happy”.

10

u/KnowsIittle Jan 13 '23

I understand the intended message but I can't help the message I see.

10

u/beigs Jan 13 '23

I honestly don’t remember the book at all, just that it was pretty and holographic. I think it was my younger brother’s, but the art stuck out.

When she turns you can see the hanging gems spinning out, and if you look on the edges around her arms you'll see crystals. It's so glittery because it's got a lot of rhinestone and crystal embellishments, the tabs are just the base.

54

u/stonecharioteer Jan 13 '23

I'm surprised beauty pageants are still a thing in 2023! People get cancelled for much less.

10

u/mntraye Jan 13 '23

they evolved.. that's why beauty pageants survived. If you watch one now, (at least the major ones) they judged more on how well they carry themselves on stage, and on how they answer questions. Some major ones even look on their advocacies.

If you reach a beauty pageant of that caliber, It is given that you're already beautiful, thus they are mainly judged on the ones I mentioned. Today, beauty pageants are more like a combination of a modeling contest, a speech contest, that take into account their background, advocacies, and life story.

I kinda get why people hate on beauty pageants because when you hear the name "beauty pageant" , it's kinda shallow and ambiguous and so It's easy to hate on something that you don't even know/see. But today, it's much more than physical "beauty:.

13

u/chantaje333 Jan 13 '23

Question- Could you explain your country’s obsession with only crowning half white queens over someone who is all filipina? I was curious and looked it up and you have had half-white half Filipina Miss Philippines almost every year. Even both of your recent winners are half white. I believe beauty pageants are huge in Philippines but this beauty standard must really kill the confidence of those little Filipino girls who look up to them and dream of being a beauty queen one day.

6

u/wan2tri Jan 13 '23 edited Jan 13 '23

Er, for the last 12 representatives, that's Cortesi, Gray, Peters, and Wurtzbach. So 4 half-white.

There are 3 more half, but they're still Asian (because 2 with Indian fathers, Mateo and Raj, and 1 Palestinian, Ganados). So unless you count those as white, only then would it be closer to being "half-white almost every year" with 7 out of 12.

Yeah… this is a huge issue in Thailand (and much of the world). Colorism is a ubiquitous. Skin bleaching, extensive facial surgeries. Completely unrealistic for literally just about any Thai girl to look like that.

My wife’s cousin had a massive stroke and they suspect all the pills and treatments she was doing to whiten her skin contributed to it.

I just had a look through the delegates and the delegates from Singapore, Korea, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia are paler than the delegates from Finland, Iceland and Norway (tbf the Norwegian candidate went for a very minimal makeup look).

The Korean delegates skin in the headshot is edited so pale that it's actually grey. The Chinese delegate is practically a ghost compared to the also ethnically Chinese candidate from Canada.

Ironically a lot of the predominantly white countries sent ethnically Black (France, Netherlands, UK), Mixed (Belgium, Italy), and Asian (Canada, UK) delegates. Even notoriously homogenous Japan has a delegate of Peruvian-Japenese descent.

15

u/pakchimin Jan 13 '23

To be fair, white people love to tan. Especially celebrities and personalities. I've seen a photo of Florence Pugh next to Zendaya, and they have the same skintone. So a white candidate isn't even a good metric when comparing skintones, because they tan themselves until they're orange.

I actually don't even find her that pretty, just unsettling mostly. It feels like there's no humanity left in that face, just looking at it visually

49

u/Lawgirl77 Jan 13 '23

Okay, I’m not the only one who felt this way. I hate to say this, but I was getting really uncanny valley vibes from her visually. It was very unsettling.

31

u/GlobalLeftist Jan 13 '23

She’s horrifying looking. No idea how people can be attracted to facial augmentation This extreme.

16

u/PM_ME_NCIS_QUOTES Jan 13 '23

Oh God, I didn't even see her face. Her body entranced me (as a straight woman who isn't even into this stuff).

I feel like an ass, I saw her saunter out and just thought "Jesus that's a beautiful woman"

12

u/LazySleepyPanda Jan 13 '23

That would be because she looks less like a human and more like a plastic doll.

The same goes for a LOT of women these days, even normal "non-beauty queen" women. We are expected to achieve a standard of perfection that requires us to erase everything human about ourselves- that frizzy hair ? No, get it straightened. Eyebrows ? No way, get it threaded. Few spots on skin ? You better wear that concealer and foundation. Oh, don't forget to contour. And please overdraw your lips while you're at that. Hair on the body - Eww, get a full body wax ASAP, that is gross. The list goes on - bleaching, surgeries, crash dieting.

Why is a women supposed to look as un-natural as possible to fit in ? Why should we look almost not human to be respected or desired, while undergoing a lot of pain and spending a lot of money ?

Tbh when she walked out the first thing I noticed was her lips look crooked. Specifically the left side of her face.. when the cam zoomed closer to her face I thought “oh yea that’s a botched lip injection or somethin.”

34

u/asked2manyquestions Jan 13 '23

I was in the middle of doing the same. LOL.

I live in Thailand and one look at her and I was like, “She looks like luk krueng (mixed - half Thai half white) which means it’s highly unlikely her story is true.”

But plastic surgery makes a lot of sense too.

Also, her Wikipedia page says she went to Kasetsart University which is, again, also surprising given that most poor people aren’t afforded the opportunity to go to university in Thailand.

But then you read the complete bio and, yes, her parents had nice jobs working for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) as garbage collectors.

That means she grew up with two fully employed parents with government jobs which is a lot better off than most “poor” people.

Also, the announcer makes it sound like she grew up in a monastery/temple when her bio says she grew up raised by her grandmother who was a Buddhist nun.

Grandparents raising their grandchildren is quite normal in Thailand and not really a sign of poverty.

Oh, wait, her bio also says she’s 25% German (making her the sixth consecutive Miss Thailand of mixed race).

I’m guessing that means that her father or mother was born to a German father.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Sueangam-iam

BTW, just to be clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with mixed race children. My wife is Thai.

I just think that the Thai obsession with mixed race looks is so strange considering the stunningly gorgeous Thai women.

A very large percentage of the Thai entertainment industry is mixed race. So that’s what gets presented as the beauty standard.

Which leads to a vicious cycle of Thais trying to look as Caucasian as possible. Skin whiteners (almost all cosmetics, including sun screen, contain whitening products), nose jobs, etc.

My wife and I laugh all the time when you see a bunch of people on the beach and the tourists are all white whales sunning themselves and the Thais are all dressed in long sleeve compression shirts, leggings that go down to their feet, and wearing hats so they aren’t exposed to any level of sunlight.

In Thailand, and many Asian countries, being anything darker than a sheet of printer paper is a sign that you’re from the working class and low status.

Sort of how I feel about Kim Kardashian, beautiful but in a heavily augmented way.

It’s Thailand, I’m not surprised. Same goes for Korean pageants

20

u/witcherstrife Jan 13 '23

Koreans still look Korean though. I saw the sash name and was like what the fuck Thailand?

4

u/Ok-Breakfast7186 Jan 13 '23

Oh there’s definitely more cultural connotations behind that which I’m not educated enough about to speak on

6

u/Jeslovespets Jan 13 '23

She reminds me of Melania Trump

11

u/electricmisconduct Jan 13 '23

She got plastic surgery to make herself look white and it's really disturbing.

Yup, I think plastic surgery should be banned from these run shows. I don't care for them too much, but allowing plastic surgery kinda defeats the purpose of beauty pageant.

This "beauty" is derived from surgery, this is not genetic beauty. Someone paid a lot of money to make her look European. Kind of sad.

I do however appreciate the upcycled dress.

So global beauty pageants are basically just about “who looks the most white from your country?”

17

u/Limeila Jan 13 '23

France must have misread the assignment then because we have black contestants almost as often as white ones

yeah she doesn't even look Thai, it's kinda sad

17

u/wat-lady Jan 13 '23

She’s 1/4 German ancestry, making her technically Eurasian. I’m am Thai and Caucasian and I look similar to Anna Sueangam-iam. That being said, I don’t think it’s really fair to say she “doesn’t even look Thai.” Thai people can look very different depending on their backgrounds. Source: I am Thai.

If her entire face is surgically created why is she or any other woman allowed to compete in a beauty pageant. What is the point? The surgeons are the ones who actually deserve the credit here. Props to her having good hardworking parents but this is a disgrace to have her participate. I’ve been to Thailand the amount of skin bleaching and surgery they do is insane and how can she properly represent Thai people if she looks nothing like them bc of surgical enhancements.

85

u/DrinkSoyMilk007 Jan 13 '23

They should have the surgeons walk in behind them when they strut. Could be more interesting competition then.

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 13 '23

Dr. Chiu and Dr. Ziering also want to solve world hunger. They deserve to be seen and heard too.

I would LOVE that concept.

u/Limeila Jan 13 '23

Miss France bans contestants who've had plastic surgery and I think Miss Universe should too

18

u/TheWalkingDead91 Jan 13 '23

I was just thinking of saying that if someone had told me this woman was Thai, I wouldn’t believe them, but didn’t want to be the first negative Nancy to point it out…thanks for making me feel less bad about thinking it lol.

When poor Thai girl gets wealthy non-Thai boyfriend: 1) Bracers 2) Nose job 3) Boob job 4) Eye job or botox

If BF is Korean, then it's even worse.

I am currently in Thailand, and I see 10 women every day more natural and beautiful than this girl.

Plastic surgery is a disease we shouldn't encourage.

24

u/GlobalLeftist Jan 13 '23

Hard agree. This is disturbing.

13

u/greenMintCow Jan 13 '23

*body dysmorphia

Plastic surgery can help reconstruct burn victims, victims of any type of accident, or those with inhibiting birth defects.

Examples

I knew a guy who had some problem with opening his eyes and it was impeding his vision and ability to do things daily. After surgery he could functionally see with ease and was a lot happier.

There is one notorious incident where a model's face and upper body were destroyed from an acid attack by her abusive ex. Surgery helped her so that she could function (eat, breath etc) and help with her confidence, but her modeling career was over.

There was a post on reddit of someone who had to get his whole face reconstructed because of severe damage from a fall. His story was also covered in an article by the guardian

I'm all for plastic surgery regardless. It's the pressure to match the beauty standard that is toxic.
