Why does that deer have a collar? I get that it’s a pet but…

I knew a veterinarian who had 2 pet deer they were abandoned and he raised them. Bottle fed them and everything. An axxis deer like the one in the pic and a red deer (much bigger). They were cool like big dogs.

I knew a woman who did some wildlife rehab who had one, and you're exactly right about it being like a dog. It would run up to car when she came home, scratch at the door if it wanted inside, etc.

u/SrslyNotAnAltGuys Jul 12 '21

Can you housetrain train them? I wouldn't want to clean up after one inside.

There was this guy who lived up the road from me when I was a kid that had like 10 pet deer. They were all rehab deer but not allowed to be released to the wild due to the circumstance. So he had them in his field and all of them had collars with names.

Prancer, and Dancer, and Comet, and Cupid...

12

u/titsoutshitsout Jul 12 '21

I wish I remembered the names. We weren’t really close to the guy but maybe talked to him once or twice.

18

u/daffydubs Jul 12 '21

Was the dude’s initials S.C.?

8

u/jdstorer12 Jul 12 '21

Scott Calvin?

36

u/Kiltymchaggismuncher Jul 12 '21

Probably to make it obvious that it's a pet. Otherwise someone will likely phone animal services because they spotted an orphan fawn. Similarly stray cats can have collars too, they might be getting looked after by a shop owner, and having a collar stops them being taken to shelters

13

u/Polyfuckery Jul 12 '21

Its probably is in the hopes that someone won't shoot it if it wanders up to them

u/HybridMomentsAtx Jul 12 '21

Stop kink shaming the deer!

1

u/producer35 Jul 12 '21

Oh, dear.

2

u/HybridMomentsAtx Jul 12 '21

slow clap

Well played.

15

u/kendall8080 Jul 11 '21

First thing I noticed as well

13

u/fobolivk Jul 11 '21

Something about it just doesn’t seem right to me.

u/soda_cookie Jul 11 '21

I mean if I came to the park with my deer unleashed, I'm sure there would be ateast one person pissed that he wasn't leashed. Always leash your deer.

20

u/fobolivk Jul 11 '21

Yeah you never know. Some deers don’t do well around other deers so a random deer running up to them could cause problems. Be a responsible deer owner, leash your deer.

2

u/Ok_Dog_4059 Jul 12 '21

That was what i was wondering myself.

1

u/Cuneiformation Jul 12 '21

To make the hunter feel bad.

"Moooom? Can Shirley stay over? Pleeease? We asked her parents and they said it was ok! I know we have school tomorrow but we'll only watch one movie, go to bed early and I know you have to wake up early, but I promiss we'll be very quite."

I was hunting with my daughter, walking on a tractor path thru the woods. We stopped as a young doe ran up. We froze and she meandered to within 15-20' of us. She wouldn't cross the path, apparently momma taught her well. She bolted the 15' across the path to the completely open woods on the other side, then felt safe and dawdled around a bit. The whole time we're whispering, Surely she sees us, Surely she'll run... We named her Shirley.

If your dog comes home with a new friend who happens to be a deer and the dog asks you if his new friend can sleep over, THE ANSWER IS YES, IT'S ALWAYS YES.

2

u/SpunkyJenn Jul 12 '21

Who would put a dog collar and tag on a spotted (likely nursing) fawn? She needs to be in the wild with her herd! They have very strong familial bonds, if you didn’t know.

2

u/dfffwfww Jul 12 '21

They are both wearing collars.

Not a new friend.

-2

u/signequanon Jul 11 '21
