Made some big dietary changes this year and I'm really starting to like the direction I'm headed in. Small Success

u/crystalships_ Jul 20 '21
Congrats! What kind of routines and diet helped you?
1k
u/twitchSKETCH Jul 20 '21
No sugar, no carbs, no fats. All I'm eating is lean meats and green plants. Cheat one meal once a month.
As far as exercise, real basic stuff and 15 minutes of walking a day. All under supervision from a doctor.

u/SierraNox Jul 20 '21
No sugar, no carbs is TOUGH! BIG round of applause to you!
I recently had to change my diet to low carbs, so I know how tough it is.

No sugar has made the biggest difference. My juice and soda cravings were bad before. Now, it's hardly a thought in my mind.

u/MagentaEntity061 Jul 20 '21
When I started to eat healthier reducing sugar was a big factor alongside sodium. I consumed way less artificial and more natural sugars. The craving are definitely something you have to persist through. I've been keeping it up since early 2020 and I'm still going strong. Congrats on the the progress you made and wish you the best on your health journey.

I highly recommend reading “Good Sugar, Bad Sugar” by Allen Carr. Makes quitting sugar a breeze.

Some sugar is good, much is bad, just quit sugar

u/sicktitties101 Jul 20 '21 edited Jul 20 '21
To add to this. Natural sugars like the ones in fruit are way less unhealthy. In moderation of course. It's the processed sugars that's the worst.

Take big things in your life one day at a time. Change doesn't happen instantly. It's also ok to fail, as long as you learn from those failures and are persistent in your effort to succeed. When I started to work out in early 2020 I made excuses for my laziness(I was a major procrastinator) but understood why I did and stopped. It wasn't easy to get did of my bad habits and had to give myself motivation to change. It payed off in the end and I wish the same success to you.
9
u/chaotic214 Jul 20 '21
Thank you, I keep making an effort to exercise at least three or four days of the week which has helped me feel better overall, and I do try to eat healthier but yeah I gotta take it day by day and not beat myself up too much if I do cheat on my lifestyle change of healthier eating along the way

u/TheLivingVoid Jul 20 '21
What are some staple fruits you go for?
I'll have 2 oranges a day, kiwi, strawberries & a bit of cranberry juice
Raspberry & blueberries when available
→ More replies68
u/twitchSKETCH Jul 20 '21
No fruits for the last 6 months. Only just started trying fruit again: raspberries, cherries, cantaloupe. 1/2 a cup per day. The diet allows half a kiwi a day, but I'm not comfortable leaving half a kiwi in a fridge all day.
→ More replies28
u/TheLivingVoid Jul 20 '21
You don't need to skin kiwi, just bite into them like tomatoes, they have a thorn at the bottom where they grew from the vine
Mabie you could share what your diet was with meal planning or some meal prep subreddit?
Good work!
35
u/cratts21 Jul 20 '21
What? Really? But it’s…. Hairy
62
13
u/puglife82 Jul 20 '21
It’s actually not bad, and much more convenient.
Edit: IIRC the skin has vitamins/minerals in it too

u/TheLivingVoid Jul 20 '21
I also eat sunflower shells & pretty much anything fiborus & hard I can find that's edible, I eat corn leaves, the insides can be chewed
8
u/SoulCheese Jul 20 '21
I had never had a Kiwi before in like, Kindergarten and just started eating it like that and never changed. The skin is great! It adds kind of a sourness to it.

Aye I cut sugar out of my life as well and lost 110lbs. For real there is a huge difference and I lost a lot of weight just by cutting it out. Haven't cut out carbs though. But the change is surreal.
24
u/FC_REDUX Jul 20 '21
How do you cut sugar out of your life? So much stuff has it.
48
u/EpicSniperX Jul 20 '21
Typically you're cutting out added sugars. So sugars in sodas, candy etc. You're usually fine to consume fruits and things with natural sugars in moderation. At the end of the day, losing weight is calories in vs calories out.
→ More replies32
u/Z1rith Jul 20 '21
just focus on the big ones, like no pop, junkfood, juice, sauce, desert, etc. instead use spices and garlic/onion/ginger for flavour. i recently discovered that celery in a stirfry is fantastic, especially with curry flavours.

Just by making sure products you buy have either no sugar or very little amounts.
With having bipolar disorder and being on medication I had to always do blood tests as being on medication made if you had sugar I guess it was harder to break down and made diabetes a more possible situation. So I switched to sugarless drinks. And started intermittent fasting. And when I had things with sugar in it, it ended up being something like 3g of sugar. Cutting fat out I couldn't do. But counting your calories is a good way to lose weight. I ended up usually eating 1400 calories a day. I didn't cut it completely out as if I did you can end up becoming hypoglycaemic which is bad. But basically you're trying to have as little of sugar as possible.

Start slow and work up to it.
Learn to ready nutrition labels.
First: Remove all drinks that contain sugar. You should never drink your calories.
Second: Snacks and desserts.
Third: Sauces. Most are laden with sugar. Eg 95% of the calories in heinz tomato ketchup come from carbs.
10
u/Sacrefix Jul 20 '21
Do you plan to continue the diet indefinitely?
19
u/twitchSKETCH Jul 20 '21
Yah, this will be my life diet. Maybe a few tweaks, but it's fit me pretty well.
7
u/circlejerksarefun Jul 20 '21
What was your inspiration for no fats? I've heard of popular high carb low fat diets and low carb moderate-high fat diets, but never no carb no fat.
→ More replies25
u/trollfriend Jul 20 '21
I’ve never heard of anyone attempt to eat nothing but lean meats and green vegetables for the rest of their lives. There’s no way that avoiding healthy fruit or healthy varieties of rice is good.
I understand using it as a temporary measure for weight loss, but I don’t think any serious nutritionist or doctor would sign off on it for a lifelong diet.

It's a death sentence long term. So many people have been misinformed by Keto and Low carb because it can help lose weight. It's malnutrition, our bodies run off carbs. So sad.
→ More replies4
u/HIITMAN69 Jul 20 '21
To be fair, literally every diet is a death sentence long term.
I do agree though, I don’t get the carb hate. I base my diet choices more off of glycemic index than how many carbs there are.

u/trollfriend Jul 20 '21
Do you mean that in the sense that we all die eventually anyway?
Mediterranean, whole food plant based and other diets can be very healthful and combat many illnesses as we age. It’s not just about longevity, it’s about the quality of healthy years of life.

That right there is the key, “life diet” and “fits me pretty well”. Each person needs to find what works for them and stick with it as a lifestyle.

u/EvilSporkOfDeath Jul 20 '21
When you say no carbs do you mean specifically from grains/sugar/etc? Or do you also specifically avoid high carb vegetables like onions? Same question with fats, have you been eating things like avocados?

u/JarRa_hello Jul 20 '21
I hope by "No" you mean a very little amount, just enough for your daily body requirement. Because neglecting stuff that is essential for life, does not sound very healthy.
10
u/SelectFromWhereOrder Jul 20 '21
It’s changing diet what makes you lose weight, not exercise. Exercise helps you , of course , in other ways.

I totally get that you're joking around, but I just wanted to drop through and say that there's no preamble needed.
It's okay to complement your bros without having to say "I'm not gay" first.
Normalize it. Guys giving guys compliments is normal. It's healthy. And it's only gay if you both want it to be that way.
Set an example for the young men in your life and show them that it's okay to compliment each other without saying "no homo tho."
