I was think more a " thanks dude, if i had a thumb, it'd be up right now."

u/HeartyBeast Jul 31 '21
That actually a defensive move I’m afraid. When I worked in South America for a bit, we rescued a sloth from a river and put it in a tree to dry out. Stood next to the tree to get a photo with sloth. It slowly extended its arm and then those claws came whistling past my nose are at a surprisingly fast pace.

u/Tiger-Gautreaux Jul 31 '21
It's like a mantis shrimp punch in a way isn't it?

"Thank you, human. You have distinguished yourself amongst your kind and in doing so you have ensured your place in our world once Slothkind descends from the trees. You and your seed will be protected from The Great Burning and will be allowed to live out your days together as we rebuild the world on the ashes of your civilization. Fear not, gentle human. The time approaches quickly. You will need not wait long."

u/saikopasu_neko28 Jul 31 '21

7
u/Trollsvans Jul 31 '21
So you're telling me that sloths are related to Hermaeus Mora?
6
u/NoneYours Jul 31 '21
For a being who knows everything, they sure don't know how to talk fast enough.
Lol

I would love to serve Slothkind. Life isn't meant to be fast paced, but a slow enjoyment of the simple pleasures.

Of course the sloth smiled at the man. That man just shaved about six months off of its trip to the tree.
4
u/MessyBubble4016 Jul 31 '21
Hopefully it was the right tree otherwise it's in for a huge surprise in about two weeks when it finally hits the top.

Watching stuff like this I always wonder what it would be like if other animals made it their thing to save us. Like, you’re walking past a herd of elephants and suddenly one of them picks you up and puts you on a tree. “Steve, can you please go and save that hairless ape. It’s clearly in danger.”
22
u/Schattentochter Jul 31 '21
There's stories here or there about that kind of stuff - whales protecting ships, dolphins saving drowning people - there even was this video on reddit (I'm sorry, I don't remember the sub or I'd post it) where an elephant rushed into a river and nudged a swimmer out of the river to save them.
And then, of course, there's dogs and their vicious protecting us from the evil mailman by emphatically showing them the language of their people.

Still bewildered how they aren't extinct especially knowing that lots of them die when defecating.
3
u/RoyalwithCheese10 Jul 31 '21
Lots of them die while defecating as a proportion of their total deaths. This is simply because defecation time is when they are most vulnerable as they come down from the tree tops. Otherwise they kinda make sense evolution wise; they certainly dont waste energy

u/dEdIkNigHt Jul 31 '21
A dude I know is allergic to sloths. Deathly so. How does learn such a thing you ask? He was on vacation in Chile, petted a sloth at a zoo. An hr later he was being intubated at the nearest ER. Apparently the algae that grows on them is what actually triggered the reaction.
18
u/thekittysays Jul 31 '21
The sad thing is this is happening due to deforestation. Roads and towns where there never used to be any causing animals with little to no experience of humans coming into contact with them and having no idea how to deal with it. We really are a scourge on this earth.

I am still flabbergasted by how slow they move lol. It’s so amazing

5
u/mittelhandknochen Jul 31 '21
They always appear to be smiling but that doesn't mean they're happy. If they need help, like in the video, it's ok but often tourists hold them to take pictures and think they're fine because they're "smiling" but in reality they're in distress.

u/A_Grinning_Demon Jul 31 '21
Sloths can kill in situations like these. Don't let that dopey face and slow speed fool you.

u/Jtg1960 Jul 31 '21
Hello boss I’m gonna be a few hours late for work today. Yeah I just saved a sloth from being run over in the highway and he’s taking a few hours to say “Thank you” lol
3
u/[deleted] Jul 31 '21
That sloth probably thought he entered the speed force when he got picked up and walked.

Glad they aren’t tho, so freaking cute

u/LiterallyNobodi Jul 31 '21
Animals usually don't know you are trying to help. He was both a happy and overly smart sloth.
2
2
u/jonas_rosa Jul 31 '21
Animals don't usually smile, nor do they fist bump. Those are actually defense mechanisms, it's showing its teeth and it's claws as a threat to the strange animal carrying her, because it can't just indentify that the human is helping and not attacking

Although they only come down out of the trees once a week to go to the bathroom, so now he has to hold it for another week.

u/Kaljinx Jul 31 '21
I do not exactly think middle of the street is the safest place to go to the bathroom

To make this truly magical, “I believe I can fly” needs to be playing in the background

u/MrGreenyz Jul 31 '21
They can be a domestic companions? I’d love to chill and Netflix with my bro sloth
1
u/PButta56 Jul 31 '21
Just imagine, that was probably breakneck speed for that sloth. It was probably like, "woah, woah, woahhh, wahhhhh, aaahhhhhhhh!" the whole way to the tree. Literally gave it the thrill of its life.

Everytime I see a sloth I remember the early days of youtube and severa videos of "alien creatures" and there was a footage of a sloth croossing the street and the comment.
Oh my god is a monster.
That thing freak me out.
The goberment is yada yada yada.
My country has sloth and my brain exploded with that level of ignorance.
By the war those videos were serious about it.

u/The_Real_dubbedbass Jul 31 '21
