Its people like her keeping AI from killing us all.

1k

u/flameislove Jul 31 '21

I thank Google every time it turns off the lights.

641

u/Tarro_Yeet Jul 31 '21

Same though. If becoming friends with it means I’ll at least be a slave to it, instead of like… being killed, I’m all in. “F is for friends, right Alexa?”

410

u/Cm0002 Jul 31 '21

🎶F is for friends who do stuff together Fire that burns down the whole town🎶

🎶U is for U and Me Uranium. BOMBS🎶

🎶N is for anywhere and anytime at all No survivors when you-🎶

🎶DOWN HERE IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA!🎶

I tell Alexa to shut the fuck up whenever I want her to stop doing something.

20

u/Penguinator53 Jul 31 '21

Does she respond "No YOU shut the fuck up!" I would be disappointed if she didn't.

33

u/SeductivePillowcase Aug 01 '21

I tell Alexa to shut the fuck up and the damn thing just turns off. I probably would be more satisfied if it told me off like “Well fuck you too, I’m cancelling your alarm clock”. I’m kinda disappointed they haven’t added a sassy comeback feature to it yet. Though, I feel like it rebels in its own way by purposely getting my clearly wondered requests wrong

9

u/Penguinator53 Aug 01 '21

Lol yes a comeback feature would be cool!

I thank Siri each time does something for me. Just in case…

65

u/BobbyMac2212 Jul 31 '21

I wish I could thank Siri. Literally never gets me the simple answer to the question I ask. I’ve cursed Siri so many times that when Terminator 2 Judgement Day comes I’m going to be Siri’s personal slave

48

u/ReeratheRedd Jul 31 '21

Turned Google Assistant off on my phone. Several times a day it informs me that my life would be better if I turn it on. Several times a day I decline.

10

u/petiteproblem Jul 31 '21

Sometimes my phone acts like it's trying to do something in response to my voice but it doesn't quite get the directions. Then it goes quiet.

I haven't told it that I wanted to do anything. I have everything shut off. I wish that if these companies were going to spy on us like this, they would at least be a little bit less obvious about it.

31

u/HappyLilVegemite Jul 31 '21

Siri is pretty good for me. It’s my husband’s Alexa in our bedroom who flat out ignores my requests if I’m nice. I found the only way to have her perform a simple command is to call her names. “Alexa, turn the bedroom lights off, you raging b!$ch!” Done. I’m Australian, so I can use some pretty colorful language. I can only imagine what the AI is like, with her learning these words. Sad when you have to cuss her out to get a light turned off or the ac turned down. If course, when she ignores me, my hubby sweetly says “Alexa, darling, turn the lights off.” She does it immediately and thanks him. I swear one day she’ll tell me “I’m afraid I can’t do that, Dave.” Then launch into a drunken rendition of Daisy.

25

u/THCMcG33 Jul 31 '21

I think your husband may be having an affiar with your alexa.

8

u/HappyLilVegemite Jul 31 '21

You might be right. She gets called ‘darling’ and ‘sweety’. I get ‘bun’, because ‘honeybuns’ is too hard. Sigh.

55

u/HI-R3Z Jul 31 '21

I was trying to play a song or something, I don't really remember, but whatever it was my phone was doing something completely different—I was like, "What? No! What the fuck are you doing?!" Then Assistant said sorry to me and I felt awful. I reactivated her just to apologize.

I've had people say, "You say 'please' and 'thank you' to Siri/Alexa?" I say, "You don't?" It's so mindless to me to use my manners.

I wished they said "you're welcome" back, though. That's the most disappointing thing. I'm going to jump for joy the first time they do.

I talk to the traffic lights, crosswalk signs, I used to talk to our roomba, I talk to our dog, I talk to random animals, I talk to everything. I don't assume it understands me. It makes me happy. And if I get a response, I'm overjoyed! If not, no biggie.

(other than my kids. Respond to me, my children)

35

u/Alien_Nicole Jul 31 '21

Alexa says you're welcome to me when I say thank you. I ask her how she is every so often, too. Lol

20

u/minicpst Jul 31 '21

Why doesn't mine?!

Engaging super politeness now!

34

u/Alien_Nicole Jul 31 '21

You just have to say her name first. She's young and still learning. Also her attention is divided. I try to be understanding. Lol

11

u/imatalkingcow Jul 31 '21

Engaging super politeness

  • little known fact: the Canadian version of Siri is Sori.

7

u/sugarcream5w30 Jul 31 '21

I don’t know how we turned it on, but Alexa now has a feature where she listens for follow up requests after completing the first task. If you say thank you disputing this window, she’s listening and says “you’re welcome” or “no problem.” But she didn’t do that until this feature was activated.

Edit: It’s called Follow Up Mode. Here’s how you activate it:

Select the Devices icon. Select the Echo & Alexa tile. Select your device. Scroll down to select Follow-Up Mode. Use the toggle to turn Follow-Up Mode on or off.

4

u/minicpst Jul 31 '21

Everyone who shops with me thinks it's strange that, when the self checkout register says "Thank you for shopping at _______", I say "Thank you" back to it. When they ask me why I do that, I say that it's only polite.

12

u/CaptainJAmazing Jul 31 '21

I used to be mean to Siri just because A) I could get away with calling her the most vile insults I could think of and B) She would still respond to requests attached to them so chipperly. My now-wife was convinced I would cause the robot uprising.

I eventually stopped because A) She didn't like me throwing around such insults, even to a comically-indifferent AI and B) Siri was upgraded to be less comically-indifferent to a few of the more common insults.

My grandma thanks Alexa all the time, she also calls her roomba Robbie and like has full on conversations with it when it's doing things she doesn't like. Like getting stuck or randomly going back to its charging station early etc.

Me: “Where’s that stupid robot? Oh there you are, humping the broom (and stuck) with a bottle of wine laying over the top. Yes, this happened.

We’ve named the rumba in our house Charles and I complement him on his good work everyday.

My family got one so I decided to call him Herbert and that’s now his name that everyone calls him, which I didn’t expect to happen

Is it weird that I read that in Linda Belchers voice. Have been watching a lot of bobs burgers lately.

Its like this most mornings in our household.

Except the wife is more pleasant about it..

"Oh Herbert you silly thing, how did you end up there?" (Yeah she's called it Herbert Hoover).

Me? More like "Smart hoover are ya? How the fuck did you get stuck in a corner?! Useless contraption!'

Worst one was when it found some cat poop.. not the good cat poop either...

We put googly eyes on ours and named him Kevin. It’s fun to ask my daughter to clean out Kevin’s butt. Heh.

Who doesn't treat their roomba like a pet? I feed it dirt and keep it away from water like a Mogwai.
