253

u/soberautumn Aug 09 '21

Exactly what I was hoping to hear, already preparing my fishing rod :)

We gotta leave early in the mornin’, that’s when they really bite. We’ll stop and get McDonald’s on the way.

My grandpa passed away in January and this brought back some great memories of that little back and forth. We would go fishing and McDonald's early morning would happen.

I feel you. I never got the chance to meet either of my grandfathers, they both passed about 5 years before I was born. Add that to losing both grandmothers 9 days apart when I was 9, and seeing stuff like this makes me feel sad. Sad and full of longing for things that never were

This feels very real. You literally described a day I went fishing with my grandpa when I was younger. A joint in mouth, an Egg McMuffin in one hand and his fishing pole in the other; pretty much tells you what kinda guy we’re talking about here (Jeff Bridges mixed with the neighbor from Home Improvement that’s only ever seen peeking over his fence, putting out grandfatherly neighbor vibes). He passed away from cancer a few years ago, fishing pole in one hand, and my hand in the other. He is missed by many in my community and deeply missed by me. After reading your posts, it made me realize that there could be many other people with Grandpas that were just like mine, badass. Knowing that’s a possibility makes me very happy. Thank you

10

u/SoothsayerAtlas Aug 09 '21

I’m sorry for your loss, he sounds like an amazing guy to have in your life. I’m genuinely honored to have reminded you of a man you thought so highly of. Here’s to you, your grandfather, and every badass grandfather out there 🍻 🫂💕

1k

u/De_immortalesloki Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

Hey, it's good and all, but sometimes, you have been looking forward to get a ball for life, but when you get it, audience boo you for not giving it to the little kid back somewhere

835

u/straighttalkin64 Aug 09 '21

I’ve got 4 game-baseballs from when I was a kid. One of which was handed to me when I was maybe 10 - and I remember all of it. Not the excitement of getting a game ball, but the legendary dude who gave it to me. He had long red hair, a full beard, his name was Rich, and he worked at a 7/11. He also had a little portable TV set he carried with him (this is mid-90’s), which I assumed at the time was because he loved to watch all the games! His eyes were also very red, but that’s probably because he was sleepy. Later in the game, I remember my dad asked him to “keep an eye on me and my brother” while he went to the bathroom. Wherever you are, Rich, I hope you’re doing well and I hope you won a bunch of cash on all those games. Thanks for looking after me for those 10 minutes 25 years ago, but most of all, thanks for the game-ball…I still have it!

649

u/DweadPiwateWawbuts Aug 09 '21

Later in the game, I remember my dad asked him to “keep an eye on me and my brother” while he went to the bathroom.

I've been on reddit too long. I 100% expected the next sentence to be "And now I live with Rich. Wherever you are, dad, I hope you're doing well and I hope you had a good trip to the washroom."

146

u/straighttalkin64 Aug 09 '21

Hahaha. I mean, I won’t lie. Rich was super cool (and I had a great dad too). Either scenario would’ve worked just fine for me!

49

u/great_waldini Aug 09 '21

Actually laughed out loud thank you

16

u/AllYouNeedIsACupOTea Aug 09 '21

I'm glad I'm not the only one 😂 your scenario read much funnier than mine though. Thanks for the chuckle on my way to work !

I'm from the UK and went to a game at the Dodgers Stadium. I was blown away by how friendly everyone was. We were bought 'rope', taught how to sing 'Take me out to the ball game' and had a wonderful time.

13

u/straighttalkin64 Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

That’s great! I actually live in LA now (my wife is from LA). But, I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. The since demolished “Tiger Stadium” (where I met Rich) had a feel at least similar to Dodger Stadium. Dodger Stadium is definitely still a link to the past in terms of US baseball. Yea it’s old and the parking lot is a nightmare, but, it’s still fun!

A couple years ago, the company I work for had some visitors from the office in Brazil. We took them to a baseball game. They loved it and picked up the basic rules pretty quickly, but the one thing that confused them most was “take me out to the ball game.”

“Why do we sing this song?” “Why now? It would make more sense at half time” “Every team sings the same song? That’s silly!”

60

u/killamanjaro6969 Aug 09 '21

Sorry what the fuck did you just say?

6

u/DogsAreAnimals Aug 09 '21

So much confusion with all these vague pronouns. Both kids have multiple moms and girlfriends

30

u/Zergmilran Aug 09 '21

The girl next to him? If that's his mom, she is insanely young lol.

12

u/DamnAlreadyTaken Aug 09 '21

I think mom is left, and I suspect the blonde at the right side is the gf.

So, my guy looks at said gf and fears the worse. He got handed the ball by another blond, in a split second there's that look to gf and the exit plan to get rid of that ball asap.

Down the thread other redditors have noticed the same.

9

u/Zergmilran Aug 09 '21

Even if his mom is left, she is still extremely young lol. Both girls to his sides are young, no way any of them are his mom.

102

u/Mottorboatin Aug 09 '21

Please don’t ever mention an American version of Dark. I fear it might be too late tho and you have unleashed a dangerous though to the world.

It’s the best thing Netflix has ever put out.

33

u/slowlanders Aug 09 '21

I just wish I could get my sci-fi loving friends to watch it (and The Expanse). But it's like pulling teeth trying to get sci-fi fans to actually watch good sci-fi.

15

u/Whatbout8manarmy Aug 09 '21

ok I'm your friend now and I'm gonna watch it because of you :)

9

u/Stunning-Response-67 Aug 09 '21

Dark is on my list.

I started watching The Expanse when it was on television. Dropped it after news of the cancelation broke. Haven't gotten back to it yet. So many movies, games, shows, books. I'm inundated with media.

9

u/slowlanders Aug 09 '21

The Expanse is gonna end with season 6 which is a natural stopping point anyway. In the books there is a huge gap of time between book 6 and 7 so you could just read the final three books to get things wrapped up. The show is so worth it - it's too bad not enough people watched it so we could get all 9 seasons.

Plot twist: Little boy now has a hat, shirt, glove and the ball girl’s phone number.

447

u/NYCQuilts Aug 09 '21

LOL. That’s rom com material. Now the ball girl has to get with her friends & figure out another way to get that guy’s attention.

127

u/momzeggs89 Aug 09 '21

Or the guy has to track the kid down to get the number

61

u/Sharplookout Aug 09 '21

Both are happening at the same time, but do to amusing timing they keep missing each other or going to opposite places. Turns out the boy was a ghost and was able to move on after fulfilling his life long dream of getting a baseball and now the Boy and Girl will never meet each other again. Oh what would of been. And reset for the next plot.

6

u/momzeggs89 Aug 09 '21

The title would be foul ball

23

u/capitolsara Aug 09 '21

Ooo it's both movies and in classic rom com missed connection everything they do makes it harder to find the other

14

u/Creepy-Rough5480 Aug 09 '21

But the guy goes to space for five years then comes to earth after 50 years and marries the ball girl’s daughter.

12

u/DevilGuy Aug 09 '21

I'm pretty sure the girl he was with is his girlfriend, she was giving the ball girl an... interesting... look when she handed it to him.

5

There’s a small possibility the guy realized what the gf was thinking and ditched the ball as quickly as possible as to avoid any conflicts/arguments. You can almost hear his thoughts as he sits down. “Shit, gf is going to lose her shit if I keep the ball this girl gave me”

Iol true, the way he got up was a “My girlfriend says no” moment just like when your boys ask you to hangout.

That Arsenal fan looks depressed as shit. Some things never change

8

u/bionicbob321 Aug 09 '21

Out of the like 45 balls thrown into the audience at the jays game the other day, 30 of them were given away to children.

As a Mom of boys, little boys look up to big boys so much! I make sure my big boys do honorable things so little boys see how it works. Boys are just the best kiddos!

Ball girl was hot….right?

21

u/TripleFFF Aug 09 '21

Well the other girl has a face like thunder at the start so... you betcha

12

u/lee7890 Aug 09 '21

Yep, that’s why he had to ditch the ball.

11

u/Lunarswine Aug 09 '21

That is the most classic baseball move ever lol the teenager even knew it begrudgingly too. He wanted that baseball, but he knew that baseball etiquette dictates that the closest toddler gets the ball. Good on him for being so young, yet still respecting the unwritten rules. I hope that date went well for him.

u/Ghost_out_of_Box Aug 09 '21

Well he is clearly a football fan (BVB DORTMUND JERSEY )

11

u/TooMuchTime87 Aug 09 '21

This dude is surrounded by hot girls... then a hot baseball player walks up to him specifically and hands him the ball.

wtf... I cant even get a hot girl to look in my direction.

Plot twist: He gave the ball away as he had already memorized the phone number and didn't want his gf to get suspicious

5

u/1stonedape Aug 09 '21

We "Massholes" aren't all assholes. We are kind. Sometimes. For people out of country, it's an inside joke that people in Massachusets drive like assholes.

9

u/jukebox_grad Aug 09 '21

Red Sox fans are brutal.

I moved from Red Sox territory to Philly. They’re both batshit. I can’t escape it. To be fair, Philly fans are worse than Boston/New England.

6

u/runtimemess Aug 09 '21

It's been very refreshing to have the Red Sox visit Toronto and there being next to no Red Sox fans in the crowd.

Yeah. The term ‘Masshole’ is definitely ONLY because of your driving habits. ;)

I know the whole stigma is you’re supposed to give a ball to little kids but I am not really a big fan of that I mean I’m going there and getting those seats with a chance of possibly getting a ball whether it be in foul territory or home run territory and I’m not giving it to anybody they’ll have plenty of chances to go back and get a ball. I’m sorry if I sound like an ass but that’s a once in a lifetime thing that I don’t want to miss

3

u/RxndoSxndo Aug 09 '21

3

u/wty261g Aug 09 '21

I'm guessing my man got pretty laid after that

3

u/Degausser89 Aug 09 '21

That child then turned around and gave it to an infant, who then turned around and gave it to a fetus.

3

u/finger_my_mind Aug 09 '21

More than that going on…. Cute ball girl gives guy a ball in front of his cute girlfriend… to diffuse impending storm ball must be given away. Panic, find nearest kid. Crisis averted. Maintain sexy time.
