I’ll celebrate with you. I just gave up booze exactly 4 days ago. A year seems a long ways away so you’re my goal!

Edit: you people are incredible. Thank you for the support!

I just did the same thing a month ago, I must say the 1,5 hour of walking a day I've been doing since then have been my saving grace. :) make sure to treat yourself to fun and nice things to do! (I bought a new beautiful 1000 pieces puzzle (normally only buy them second hand) and a book I always wanted to read but was always too hangover for) you got this! I'm so proud of you for trying!

Heck yeah! Take it one day at a time. I like to reward myself for exercising with non-food things like manicures and tattoos. Lol. Things I don't normally do. Self care is the best care.

Definitely the best care! And good to retrain your brain, mine was used to see alcohol as a reward and it's helpful to override that impuls :)

Exactly! Retraining your brain to see positive things as a reward is so important.

Congratulations! And thank you so much for the encouragement and advice. Thankfully fitness and art are already a big part of my life. You nailed it when you talked about being too hungover for your hobbies. Realizing that booze was the major roadblock to my goals was one of the reasons I quit.

Is your bowflex still unused? 😀

One day at a time my friend. That's how to do it. If you wake up tomorrow wanting to have a drink, promise yourself to wait until tomorrow to decide. If the next day you feel the same way, reach out to someone that can talk you through it.

If a day is too long break it down to an hour or even a minute. Can I stay sober for an hour, if that is too hard just for a minute, than another minute until your have an hour. Congratulations you got this.

This works too, but imho if it's bad enough to have to do it like that then maybe they should seek an inpatient facility. It's nothing to be ashamed of for thinking that it's impossible to stay sober, but it's stressful enough to do all that is necessary to unpack the baggage behind whatever addiction someone is facing. If it's seeming too much to stay sober for another minute or hour, pick up the phone and make a call. If you're in recovery already, it means you've accepted that your vices were too much for you. There is nothing wrong with continuing to need the extra help from someone within the community. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that, but if it does that doesn't have to mean falling off the wagon. Stay safe. Stay clean. Stay positive

Thank you. It helped me get sober 31 years ago along with AA and a good sponsor. Never did inpatient treatment. 32 years on 9/12/2021. Everyone is different. Stay sober!

Well done my friend. Well done. Whatever it takes to make the dream of sober life stay a reality.

Thanks for the smile today.

Same to you for sharing about 30+ years. That gives us "short timers" hope for our futures

Just remember nothing is so bad that a drink or drug will fix. One day at a time. 👍

I know. It took a while for that thought to drill itself into my head and past my self pity and it's why through multiple attempts at sobriety I ended up back in the bars. There is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. I found my love and she will become my wife next year. Sobriety is good

Get a hobby that you can see the results of at the end of the day. I quit 3 months ago and started trading lumber in the evenings (I sell steel for a living, so commodities are up my alley). I am losing weight, getting exercise, and matching my salary at my current job. Plus, having cash in hand has given me the immediate reward that I used to chase with alcohol. Give it 2 months and you will see how much more productive you are, and also how much time you wasted in the bottle.

where are you trading lumber in the evenings?

Sorry, I don't check Reddit much. I live on the west coast of Canada. I buy lots of used or new lumber and resell it to retail buyers at a significant discount. Mostly in onesie twosies, but I have had a few large sales. It's not for everyone--its a lot of work, and it requires a good reliable truck (and back), a decent sized trailer, and if you don't want to handle every single piece, a means to machine offload. I can't stress enough that it's a lot of work though haha. I spend at least 2-5 hours a night driving, loading and/or offloading.

It's hard, and I congratulate you for taking that step :)

One day at a time, you can do this!
