A shot of two widowed penguins appearing to comfort one another in Australia has been picked out as a winner in Oceanographic magazine's Ocean Photograph Awards.

The photo was taken by Tobias Baumgaertner in Melbourne.

"A volunteer approached me and told me that the white one was an elderly lady who had lost her partner and apparently so did the younger male to the left," Mr Baumgaertner

"Since then they meet regularly, comforting each other and standing together for hours watching the dancing lights of the nearby city."

I saw this a while ago and liked it so much I saved it. Now you guys can read more about it also!

6

u/roxan1930 Aug 16 '21

So it's not a romantic advebture movie but one where the main characters help each other accept and deal with their losses while supporting each other as the friends they need and deserve

5

u/Mycatwearspants Aug 15 '21

Excuse me while I cry now

4

u/This-is-Life-Man Aug 15 '21

That's why penguins are my favorite animal. They have crazy emotions you can easily see.

3

u/NotFanatic Aug 16 '21

This is a plot for a pixar movie that I’d gladly watch

3

u/Wrong_Brilliant7851 Aug 16 '21

I’m not crying, you’re crying

3

u/Tawdry-Audrey Aug 16 '21

If this were made into a Pixar movie then it'd be sadder than Up.

3

u/5iveheadshrty_ Aug 16 '21

this reminds me of Harold and Maude

3

u/thefisheyboy Aug 16 '21

This is why I think humanity should evolve into penguin instead of returning to monke

3

u/Minnesota_Nice_87 Aug 16 '21

And now I'm crying.

3

u/LinguisticsIsAwesome Aug 16 '21

Right in the feels

4

u/ChefKakashi Aug 15 '21

This broke my heart into a thousand pieces but I'm also comforted by the fact that they have each other. Emotional rollercoaster.

2

u/Cakey-Baby Aug 15 '21

Why can’t everything be this sweet…

2

u/RedHeadGeekGrl Aug 15 '21

I seen to have a leak in my eyes

2

Awe ❤️‍🩹 I’m not crying… I swear 😭😭 It’s amazing how animals show love and compassion towards each other.

2

u/TEMOfficial Aug 16 '21

Pixar, where you at? We need this!

2

u/Responsible_Ad8488 Aug 16 '21

That should be a movie

2

u/BamseMae Aug 16 '21

When is this movie coming out?

2

u/CrypticalPenguin Aug 16 '21

I absolutely love penguins.

2

u/depressedostrichstan Aug 16 '21

There must be something in my eye...otherwise I wouldn't be tearing up this much.

2

u/Whatvotquack Aug 16 '21

I'd watch this if it was a Disney movie

2

u/NotMyHersheyBar Aug 16 '21

2

u/BlackRose Aug 16 '21

Harold and Maude penguin style.

2

u/CN8YLW Aug 16 '21

So... a pair of bereaved birds comforting each other while a bunch of stalkers follow them taking photos and videos?

2

u/Monoliathan Aug 16 '21 edited Aug 16 '21

What if Penguins had feelings?

2

u/dedreo Aug 16 '21

Oh my poor cold heart!

2

u/velmadinkleyscousin Aug 16 '21

Somebody call Pixar IMMEDIATELY

2

u/NguyenKhangThinh Aug 16 '21

When literal penguins are acting more human than actual humans.

2

u/Baseball_Frequent Aug 16 '21

So, penguin MILF?

Penguin sugga mamma?

Penguin jigolo?

2

u/butlikewatifthiserrr Aug 15 '21

Lol the internet

3

u/Teftthebridgeman Aug 15 '21

So how do you work in the guy who works at the zoo just picking up penguins that fall over because of airplanes all day?

1

u/Zachwank Aug 16 '21

Is this actually real?

1

u/asumfuck Aug 17 '21

It's some random story that's been told by a few people that doesn't have any evidence that it regularly happens. Just some pictures from one event and some hear say. So probably not.

0

u/Zachwank Aug 17 '21

If you scroll down some people posted links with sources for this sooo I would say don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions

1

u/asumfuck Aug 17 '21

I saw them. They aren't reliable sources nor do they provide any evidence outside this picture, mention of a social media post and a story some guy who told some other guy that was then told to a guy with access to a website. Sooo I wouldn't be so quick to immediately believe everything I see and am told is true.

-6

u/asumfuck Aug 15 '21

The story is crazy adorable. Without any citations though it's just a made up feel good story

0

u/Siilan Aug 16 '21

0

u/asumfuck Aug 16 '21

Source basically says some guy posted the picture and story to their social media. Reading is a good way to find out if a source is genuine or anecdotal

0

u/Siilan Aug 16 '21

The colony is monitored by volunteers.

"A volunteer approached me and told me that the white one was an elderly lady who had lost her partner and apparently so did the younger male to the left," Mr Baumgaertner wrote on Instagram.

Sure, we don't have to believe his instagram post, but I don't see why he'd lie about a volunteer telling him this. Maybe try reading yourself.

u/asumfuck Aug 16 '21 edited Aug 16 '21

Again anecdotal. Maybe try understanding what proper citation means.
