Congrats and here is to many more! I am proud of you op. I hope you understand that it was a dark time in your life, a mistake, you shouldn't be ashamed of it, you should be looking nacka nd be proud of how you have grown from it. I really wish you well and I hope you will succeed in life.

u/Nimr412 27d ago
Thank you so much for your words! Honestly it took a time to get out of that shameful state of mind but now that I look back at it I just see it as a moment of my life that I needed to go through to become as strong and focused as I am now!

It's ok, it just means you get to try again. Nobody is perfect and 40 days is quite an achievement, well done!

Can you be in AA if you don't believe in God? Congrats BTW

u/MagerSuerte 27d ago
Yes, that would make me feel very uncomfortable about the whole thing. It's a fantastic achievement though!

Just curious, are all these AA type groups religious? Are there any that arnt? My brother could use AA but wouldn't want anything with religious ties.

In my experience, AA/NA groups have never pushed any kind of religion. It is a spiritual program, but even the AA big book describes it as a God of your own understanding. I've seen others say they have had religion pushed on them, so that may happen in some places. My experience is in Chicago and the Pacific Northwest.
There are tons of Zoom meetings that I would give a shot if you're not comfortable going in person. Reddit tends to say negative things about 12 step programs, but I've been involved in them in one way or another for years, and in my opinion they are one of the best ways to get sober. There is also SMART recovery (groups are run by a therapist and is CBT based), Dharma recovery (Buddhist based), and a lot of others if 12 steps don't click for you or your brother.

Congratulations. Huge achievement! Bravo! Question: why does the white square in the middle look like a hit of acid I done in the 80’s?

u/Cinemaslap1 27d ago
Congrats! 10 years is a huge thing!
As someone who's never dealt in this world, I get why "self", "society", and "service" are on there. but what's the significance with God on there as well? Is it because it's part of a religious organization? (No judgements, just curious)

u/Nimr412 27d ago
Thank you for asking! The group I was part of was secular but still opened the doors for anyone that found solace through God and faith. Personally for me, reasserting myself in my own faith and growing closer to a higher power helped me find comfort in a lot of lonely snd dark moments on my journey. My sponsor (who’s agnostic) took it upon himself to get me a coin with the word God on it because he understood how important of a role faith played on my recovery! I hope this answered your question!
9
u/Cinemaslap1 27d ago
That answered it perfectly, I was actually thinking about those who were agnostic. I wasn't aware there were different chips, I mean I know there's different chips depending on how long, but I didn't know they varied.
I'm glad that you've found some help through your faith. I'm not personally someone of faith, but as long as it's helped you than I don't have any qualms, and I'm very proud.
Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. Best of luck on getting that next chip

Well fucking done. I'm trying to ween myself of alcohol with weed currently. I understand the slippery slope but it's the longest I've gone without continually drinking myself into oblivion every night, so I'll take the little wins. Down to 6-9 normal beers a few times a week.
One day at a time ✌️

Congrats bro. It's 15 years alcohol free for me. I sometimes think about how I lived back then. I start my day with a tall glass of vodka, then I would stay smashed all day. In the evening before bed, I would 'count' my alcohol so I would know I had enough to crank me back up in the morning enough to go get some more. That was just dying with extra steps.
I knew I was on my way to the grave. I was afraid of life without alcohol and afraid of life with alcohol. For anyone on the edge I can tell you it's possible to live a full life without alcohol.
Even as a recovering alcoholic, I don't think the consumption of alcohol to be an evil. I have nothing against consuming alcohol. The problem was when I let alcohol consume me.

Truly well done and now it's been ten years you know you won't go back on to whatever you were taking so please don't tell reddit next year that it's been eleven years sober as its like you're just using it to gain reddit upvotes, to be fair after ten years it can't be that hard to stay sober now otherwise you wouldn't of made it to an incredible ten years in the first place, again well done though from a former drug addict nearly a year sober.

u/Nimr412 27d ago
This made me chuckle. I wasn’t planning on coming back next year, and honestly didn’t expect to have my post blow up like this! Just thought I would share a personal achievement on a sub that makes me smile ;) and hopefully show others who may be struggling or starting their journey that it is possible. Congrats on one year! And thank you!

Great job OP! Sorry to hijack all these wonderful comments but feel like sharing this is important.
What I often share when people are looking for help with any (drug) recovery. I also want to point out that you don't need to quit completely. Sometimes just slowing down can already do a lot to improve your health.
