While it's good to be confident in your own body, I've never liked the "this is what a real human looks like" narrative.

Like I'm fat and hairy and have stretch marks, but I don't think skinny, fit, hairless, or smooth-skinned people aren't real humans. This doesn't give me good vibes, it gives me condescending vibes.

Edit: to be clear as day, I'm not taking a shot at this person for her appearance. Just her wording. I am happy that she wants to promote body positivity, but I'm not happy that it seems to be at the expense of others.

QI did an episode and one part was about who was weird/normal. She (Sandi Toksvig) went on to say something along the lines of if you took the average measurements from everyone in the world, you wouldn’t be able to find a single person on the planet that fits the description.

No one is normal and that is fantastic.

u/Anon_Legi0n 27d ago

"You would find that the average human had one breast and one testicle, and yet barely anyone fits this description."

—Stephen Dubner, 'Super Freakonomics'

The original quote is from the book "Super Freakonomics". The author was commenting on the fact that you simply cannot reduce everything down to numbers

She is overweight and that’s real

191

u/enmareborn 27d ago

Agree she's not more or less human but still overweight and it's not good for any body.

163

u/thomthehipposlayer 27d ago

As an overweight person, I agree. Like, I'm not self-conscious about my weight or anything, but I'm not going to pretend that this is healthy, and I'm especially not going to act like I'm more real for it.

Actually pretty sure she falls under obese/ very obese category coming from a. Guy who has a chubby gf which used to be in the same category and now is overwieght/obese

My bad I meant my gf is now VERY overweight/ obese

Overweight> very overweight> Obese> very obese> morbidly obese?? Idk I only know those 4 since that’s what me and my gf were/are

15

u/BlueWater42069 27d ago

My view of obesity is messed up. I didn't think she was obese

2

u/671927 26d ago

To be fair, the BMI isn't always true. I've always been more heavy than my friends, even when i was skinny. Maybe i have more muscle or something, i don't know. Im overweight now, when i tell someone how much i weigh, they're shocked. Like a nurse when she weighed me, she looked at the number and was like "whoa..." then she corrected herself and said "i mean you don't look like you weigh that much".

I think her point Is that "flaws" are normal. I don't think she is excluding anything from that list, just showing us different parts of herself that aren't typically displayed.

9

u/Gloomy_Magician_536 27d ago

Yes!! She's actually beautiful. But she's not perfect. Maybe I'm fit, but I'm short and have crooked teeth. Maybe you have a smooth and clean skin, but your hair might be a mess. And that's okay. If we do not aknowledge that, we will never be confident and even worse, we might be damaging our loved ones self esteem, our siblings, friends, gf or bf. The most important thing is health

3

u/CivilizedPsycho 27d ago

Whether she intends it or not, the implication is that people without these kinds of flaws aren't real.

A caption like "people can look like this and it's completely okay" would be better than "this is what a real human looks like"

29

u/JustFrogot 27d ago

She is a real human and is, as far as I can tell, not modifying the video. Her comment is correct.

I'd like to see this turned into a compilation video with thousands of different people represented.

I didn't get the impression, that as a middle aged man , I wasnt normal because of this video.

22

u/ray_seriously 27d ago

It's just Reddit's continual "I hate fat people" narrative. If someone shows they are fat and are ok with it, it's immediately attacked for being "unhealthy." Fat people know it's unhealthy. Chill. She is a real human just like all the fit people. She was just pointing out that everyone has flaws and it's not a big deal.

12

u/JustFrogot 27d ago

Kelly Clarkson had a fantastic article that talks about her weight gain and physical/mental health. It really shows that "healthy" is a complicated combination of behaviors and finding balance with total health looks different for different people.

7

u/ray_seriously 27d ago

Absolutely. And repeatedly telling people they look unhealthy can ruin their mental health and just make them worse.

9

u/JustFrogot 27d ago

I can't argue when she says she's happier.

This is more about photoshopping and using filters, and less about her weight, which is why she puts so much focus on stretch marks - something skinny people also have - body hair, and acne. The fact that she's overweight will continue to be the point that people focus on, but it isn't the "real" that she's sending a message over.

That being said? I agree. Body positivity isn't about putting other people down, and the people that like to post pictures like "real women have curves" or "meat is for men, bones are for dogs" are working against the very movement they insist is for them. It's okay to love yourself, it's not okay to hurt others in the name of loving yourself, because people of all shapes and sizes get shit on, and sometimes we don't even realize that we are doing it because we are so used to hearing it.

Edit: Adjusted something.

I think it’s because of how often women hear: “real women don’t have hairy legs”, etc. She’s not saying other women aren’t real, she’s just pointing out that you can have flaws and still be feminine and even attractive. It doesn’t make you less of a woman.

I’m sorry but this comment is kinda “all lives matter”, y’know? It’s in retaliation to the way society MOSTLY views women, not putting other women down.

12

u/ray_seriously 27d ago

You can't be a confident woman who isn't a super model on Reddit, obv. /s

u/FodziCz 27d ago

Its just meant to show that there is nothing someone should be ashamed of.

25

u/bridgeb0mb 27d ago

it's human to gain a ton of fat. we're all unhealthy in our own ways. eating too much is the easiest trap to fall into. and it's just one of the most visible vices. you can look at me and see im skinny but you don't know i smoke cigs. giving fat people hate and invalidating them will not help them. they need positive encouragment. self hatred and loathing will not help and it could lead to eating disorders

20

u/ray_seriously 27d ago

Exactly. Fat-shaming is just hate, not "concern for their health." If they were really concerned for their health, they wouldn't try to bully people into an eating disorder.

9

u/LucyPugapoo 27d ago

She's not exactly confident if she's fishing for validation on social media

6

u/angels_exist_666 27d ago

Right?! So skinny people aren't real? Sounds immature put this way. We are ALL real humans. This is terrible. (Fat girl here)

2

u/Kaniucha 26d ago

I dont mind the wording. This is how some of normal people look like. This is not contrary to skinny hairless people but contrary to photoshoped unreal people. 😊💪🏻

-2

u/enmareborn 27d ago

Yep the post got my rare non significant downvote.

0

u/Eugenes-Axe7 27d ago

Yeah same, therefore anybody that doesn't have hairy legs or a belly isn't a "real human" no need to drag others down cuz they look different, thought that's what body positivity was all about

-2

u/high_on_ducks 27d ago

The "normalize normal body types" trends have gotten to the point that people with naturally thin bodies or flat belly are considered as alien humans perpetuating toxic body standards and people with a bit of extra fat here and there are seen as the perfect, ideal types. Like, that was not the purpose of the trend, but I guess this is what happens when things are left to the Internet.

11

u/adonej21 27d ago

Holy shit y’all somebody said “traditionally unattractive traits are normal” and you all said “shut up you’re making attractive people feel bad”.

3

u/Low-Preparation-2106 26d ago

But if everybody is beautiful, then how are attractive people supposed to feel superior???

1

u/throwawaythep 27d ago

Yeah. Also the "if celebrities looked like normal humans" thing goes with that. Every person is what a human looks like. No matter surgery or deformation or genetic mutation. Humans are just that.

22

u/ItsEmuly 27d ago

Yeah that was my initial thought too. I think some people may have missed the point of the video-

17

u/Naive-Association-68 27d ago

It’s really odd to me how any time a SLIGHTLY overweight person posts ANYTHING related to their bodies it’s always seen as “glorifying” their bodies.

Like nobody is saying it is healthy, but it sure as hell is no reason to make someone hate themselves and their other features over. In fact, bullying people about their weight is often counterproductive!! Criticizing others for simply existing is not the vibe

5

u/Low-Preparation-2106 26d ago

It really is a weird psychological phenomenon how any time somebody says "hey, it's okay to not be perfect <3" people are suddenly coming out of the woodwork to basically say "No." I wonder if it's real or manufactured? And what the personalities of these people must be like that they feel the need to tear down other people using whatever cover they can. I can't imagine that they're the kinds of people you want to be friends with irl. But apparently they're all mostly perfect, so I guess they feel threatened that if the general populace starts treating uggos and hot people the same, everyone will suddenly realize what a terrible person they were under their lottery genetics.

8

u/momma1009 26d ago

She literally zoomed in on stretch marks, body hair, zits, etc. Thats exactly what this video is about.

It happened to be filmed by an overweight person instead of a skinny person so everyone is freaking out.

77

u/One_While_1899 27d ago

I think some people are overseeing the point of, “you are beautiful” Posts. The goal isn’t to justify your imperfections and that its ok to remain that way forever, the point is that no one is perfect, everyone has issues for one reason or another and while its hard being in a slump and even harder to get out, never give up or feel like a lost cause or be depressed about your issues because it will only make it harder to get back on the wagon and continue with your life the way you want.

Facts

104

u/Howdyhoneighborino 27d ago

I'm quite surprised at the amount of comments saying that stretch marks are indicative of an unhealthy lifestyle. Stretch marks occur when there is a period of fast growth or loss and disruption of elastin and collagen. While this can be a result of obesity, there are other causes such as muscle gain, growth spurts, hormonal changes, etc. This excerpt goes a bit more in depth: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK436005/

29

u/ray_seriously 27d ago

I have stretch marks on my stomach and arms from a growth spurt as a teen that are still here over a decade later. Totally normal.

17

u/Naive-Association-68 27d ago

Yup!! Got my stretch marks when I went from a AAA to a C cup during puberty. They have yet to disappear

3

u/Pubefarm 27d ago

Yea I have ones on my hips from when they got wider as a teen and I was underweight if anything.

3

u/Cannybelle 27d ago

Got mine around puberty, around my stomach and inner thighs the worst. Was never and am not now obese (just a little bit chub).

Almost 20 yrs later theyre still here :D

3

u/simojako 26d ago

I have stretch marks all over from muscle gain. I'm not even big lol.

People are just ignorant and won't acknowledge it.

3

u/KruDe0 26d ago

I used to have this really cool stretch mark on my shoulder that looked like a wolf's claw scratched me or smthing, rlly miss my stretch marks 🥲

2

u/Jupiter163 26d ago

I got crazy stripe looking stretch marks on my back from when I grew like 8 inches in a year

2

u/Suspicious-Acadia548 26d ago

Yep, stretchmarks on my upper thighs from where I used to be a cheerleader and gymnast and my legs beefed, I'm thin and fit, and it's been 10+ years since I stopped cheer and gym because it was rough on my joints, now I run, cycle and hike (and throw my daughter up in the air), on the other hand we see it a lot in fat people, my mum, MIL and SIL all put on a lot of weight in lockdown and have lots of stretch marks, they were already big, we associate them with fat people but it's also common with growth spurts (I'm still the height of a 12yo) and muscle gain

If you're not a teenaged girl agonizing over your body flaws because you literally never see a body that's not flawless, and everyone praises the flawless... You're not the target audience here.

u/possumosaur 27d ago

This exactly. I have been there and it's a hard place to be. I think some of the comments here don't get it.

42

u/UselessBunch 27d ago

It's a perfect example of seeing the same thing through different experiences. If your experience is that of a boy looking at girls, you're going to react differently than if you're a girl looking at someone vaguely like yourself.

The stretch marks alone would have been helpful for younger me to see.

A note for the boys: if you like sexually confident women who are willing to have fun with you, support women becoming confident in their real bodies. There's a direct correlation between women feeling ashamed of their bodies and men not getting sex.

Just to comment on how the stretch marks are indicative of pregnancy or obesity. As a man I first developed stretch marks on my inner-thighs when I was in 1st grade. I was not overweight at all; stretch marks can occur when the skin undergoes a period of growth. This does not mean just getting fat.. they could occur from a growth spurt, and from gaining a large amount of muscle, or even just regular growth the comes with getting older. Also the skin of certain people are just more prone to developing them.

43

u/Distinct-Analysis-38 27d ago edited 27d ago

Being overweight, being too skinny, being cleared skinned, being covered in acne, being beautiful in a “conventional” magazine cover sense or being beautiful because of your ability to be vulnerable to a wide array of people through an online platform. These are all ways that humanity expresses itself.

2

u/PoetLucy 26d ago

Obese is not normal it's dangerous even. Stop glorifying obesity.

Yes im overweight and yes im working on it to change that.

36

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

That's not what this post is saying, but go off. It's more about the natural textures, markings, and lumps on the human body and how we all have flaws. We don't have to be airbrushed, filtered, "goddesses" like we see on instagram. If this was about obesity we'd probably see more views of her stomach, but the fact that it opens with a view of her leg with 'strawberry leg'. I've had strawberry leg since I was in middle school and my mother literally thought it was a rash and I was dying. We had to go through extra medical fees just to be told it's completely normal. We as a society don't embrace our flaws enough and it can lead to people literally not understanding their bodies or feeling comfortable in them. This video is about accepting them as human. Also she's not even obese? Chubby maybe.

7

u/jhaxvile 27d ago

Yeah i was a bit harsh to be honest. Yes i do know what you mean. Like i said im overweight and no i don't think its healthy but it's still a choice i made myself to become overweight.

u/SaintedPagan 26d ago

2

u/Uncle-Benderman 26d ago

As a fat man this offends me, yeah, tour a real person, but so is everyone else, haveing flaws doesn't make you any more or less real than everyone else, this is a horrible mindset.

Also, being fat can have serious effects on your health, while being an ass to someone for being overweight is horrible you shouldn't try to normalize it, or act like it's a better way to be. Its unhealthy. I have personally experience with what those side effects feel like, I used to be 80 pounds overweight, I'm still overweight now, by 30 pounds, but I feel a MILLION times better now than I did then. Your health is important take care of you body, dont judge people on how they look, but dont promote unhealthy lifestyles as a good thing either. Let people be who they want to be, that's their problem. Dont just become exactly like the people being horrible to you

There is also such a thing as to skinny. Dont go that way either.

Stretch marks and acne are perfectly normal and healthy. They are the main point of her video here. They're often not acknowledged by society or blatantly airbrushed out and seen as undesirable. In reality, some people just have stretch marks because of puberty or working out. Acne just happens because of hormones or sometimes even bad reactions to makeup. Being proud of our natural flaws is frankly a brave thing in a society that actively demonizes them.

What? No its not? Its about how she looks being "human" or "normal everyday human without being done up"

Being chubby is fine, having stretch marks is fine, blemishes are fine, all the flaws of unphotoshopped people are fine. That's what its about.

She's not a piece of meat and natural skin texture does not fit here unless we are talking about food.

Maybe physically, but mentally she seems to be in a good place.

Wont do to much for her if she dies with 45

2

u/LokiLaughs 27d ago

Well, I can’t argue that. I think she’s at least got a positive attitude. But I agree she is at an unhealthy weight. Heart disease/diabetes is no joke.

3

u/ThatShingIsAPyro 27d ago

How do you know she has heart disease and/or diabetes? Are you her doctor by any chance?

Super cute

3

u/hgk_93 27d ago

This is normal in America. This is fat and overweight in Europe.

5

u/Chrisodle007 27d ago

Humans come in all shapes, sizes, and colors . You are no more real than any other, but you do have a pleasant smile .

1

u/Innocently_charlie 27d ago

This post isn't of myself xx

10

u/illDrinkToIt 27d ago

What part of this made you smile?

10

u/Inner_Committee_8647 27d ago

Not everyone needs to look like models but it is also wrong to accept not taking care of yourself and not being healthy. From one extreme to the other as always on social media

10

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

How is this person not taking care of themself? Body texture is normal. Acne is normal. Stretch marks are normal. Sure, she's a little chubby I guess, but she's not obese.

9

u/Donkey_____ 27d ago

Her weight is extremely unhealthy.

9

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

Are you a doctor? Furthermore, this video is about skin texture, she happens to be chubby. She's not morbidly obese for God's sake. Yeah, she could probably lose weight, but it's frankly not that bad.

3

u/Donkey_____ 27d ago

It’s not just a little chubby. Her weight negatively affects her health.

She very well could be defined as obese.

I don’t think it’s ok to act like that is normal or ok. Obesity should not be normalized.

14

u/more_bees_please 27d ago
  1. We don't know her actual weight or her preexisting conditions based on a video. You say that we don't know she's obese yet, but she could be.

  2. Not what this video is about.

3

u/LittleBreadBoio 27d ago

Yeah my girl is thicc and all of the above and I really don't understand the big deal. I love her so much honestly and no one has ever made me love life like this.

4

Obesity is not normal.

Respect for her too show everybody her body

8

u/Bobbinapplestoo 27d ago

It's tiktok, you know she is just fishing for "You are so brave!!" "Oh inspiring, you made me feel better about myself!" comments.

They're a social media junkie looking for their fix.

10

u/sefhinny 27d ago

Not being a model and not taking care of yourself physically are 2 separate things. Let's not confuse them.

Let this serve as a reminder of what happens when you have a poor diet and lack a regular exercise routine.

Work out for at least 30 minutes a day people!!!

11

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

This video isn't about weight it's about normal texture flaws like acne and stretch marks.

-6

u/seattleracer 27d ago

This woman suffers from obesity and needs to lose weight, if not for her then for her children.

15

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

Ah yes because all women are baby factories.

As a gym bro man thing...remember 2-3 days off after intense workouts for 5+ days will only help you.

4

u/seattleracer 27d ago

Absolutely, but you can still do 30 min of light activity such as walking on your rest days. A healthy diet is also 80% of this equation!! People can lose weight just by eating better.

Hate to break it, bud, but stretch marks and acne are perfectly normal whether you want them to be or not. I get it, you're addicted to seeing airbrushed, flawless women online. Maybe if you go touch grass you might see a real normal woman and see that these 'flaws' are natural and completely okay.

Why is this posted here? What part here made you smile? Being overweight isn’t normal, unless you are in America where the average person’s BMI is 26.5 (overweight). I guess seeing that they are comfortable might’ve made you smile but accepting being overweight rather than working on it is unhealthy.

3

u/cutestxinfinity 27d ago

You are beautiful and full of kindness. Thanks for this lovely post on my cake 🎂 day! 🤗

3

u/k4rm4polic3 27d ago

She isn't normal. She is beautiful. 😁 Being normal is boring.

0

u/TheShrekster_69 27d ago

Stop cheering her on for being proud of being fat. Thats like saying don't stop drinking, if drinking makes you feel better. Accept it or not this is not healthy.

13

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

This post isn't about being fat. It's about embracing the flaws in your skin like acne and stretch marks. Society often shames us for having stuff like this and goes to the point of selling snake oil to try and fix it (especially with stretch marks). If it was about her being fat we'd probably see more shots of her stomach, and it probably wouldn't open up on her visible 'strawberry leg'

6

u/pat_a-rat 27d ago

exactly. a lot of people missed this point !! it’s not about “glorifying unhealthy bodies.” it’s about normalizing and showing that not all bodies are skinny and flawless (like what society tells us we should have).

-3

u/TheShrekster_69 27d ago

It's not only about being fat. But it's one of the things shown. I don't mind the rest, since no one can change those but embracing being overweight and calling it "real" just feels like they want to justify their actions and feel better about themself not taking care of their body.

9

u/more_bees_please 27d ago

She was showing off stretch marks and acne in that moment. Considering that the rest of the shots were about texture, it was probably more about that than about fat. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

Thanks for sharing. I'm at my biggest, used to suffer from anorexia. I just have body issues, either too skinny or too plump. Today I felt really motivated to try and get my health back to something manageable. All bodies are beautiful take care of yourselves friends.

Great excuse for an unhealthy lifestyle. Being normal isnt even a good thing roflcopter

6

12

being fat doesn’t mean you’re unhealthy. not everyone is going to be skinny and have a 6 pack of abs. let people exist on social media without saying that they’re “glorifying something unhealthy.” they’re just existing.

There’s a difference between being overweight and being obese. One is just a larger than average figure, the other is a potentially life-threatening health issue that can be linked to numerous factors and should be taken seriously.
