I have two eating disorders and I've always struggled with dysmorphia which leads me to being very underweight but seeing myself as much bigger. I wish I had been shown stuff like this as a kid and not just size 0 supermodels and diet culture. Not saying that's the only thing down to my body image issues but it definitely didn't help

17
u/Naive-Association-68 27d ago
It’s really odd to me how any time a SLIGHTLY overweight person posts ANYTHING related to their bodies it’s always seen as “glorifying” their bodies.
Like nobody is saying it is healthy, but it sure as hell is no reason to make someone hate themselves and their other features over. In fact, bullying people about their weight is often counterproductive!! Criticizing others for simply existing is not the vibe
5
u/Low-Preparation-2106 26d ago
It really is a weird psychological phenomenon how any time somebody says "hey, it's okay to not be perfect <3" people are suddenly coming out of the woodwork to basically say "No." I wonder if it's real or manufactured? And what the personalities of these people must be like that they feel the need to tear down other people using whatever cover they can. I can't imagine that they're the kinds of people you want to be friends with irl. But apparently they're all mostly perfect, so I guess they feel threatened that if the general populace starts treating uggos and hot people the same, everyone will suddenly realize what a terrible person they were under their lottery genetics.
8
u/momma1009 26d ago
She literally zoomed in on stretch marks, body hair, zits, etc. Thats exactly what this video is about.
It happened to be filmed by an overweight person instead of a skinny person so everyone is freaking out.
77
u/One_While_1899 27d ago
I think some people are overseeing the point of, “you are beautiful” Posts. The goal isn’t to justify your imperfections and that its ok to remain that way forever, the point is that no one is perfect, everyone has issues for one reason or another and while its hard being in a slump and even harder to get out, never give up or feel like a lost cause or be depressed about your issues because it will only make it harder to get back on the wagon and continue with your life the way you want.

u/Howdyhoneighborino 27d ago
I'm quite surprised at the amount of comments saying that stretch marks are indicative of an unhealthy lifestyle. Stretch marks occur when there is a period of fast growth or loss and disruption of elastin and collagen. While this can be a result of obesity, there are other causes such as muscle gain, growth spurts, hormonal changes, etc. This excerpt goes a bit more in depth: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK436005/

u/ray_seriously 27d ago
I have stretch marks on my stomach and arms from a growth spurt as a teen that are still here over a decade later. Totally normal.

Yep, stretchmarks on my upper thighs from where I used to be a cheerleader and gymnast and my legs beefed, I'm thin and fit, and it's been 10+ years since I stopped cheer and gym because it was rough on my joints, now I run, cycle and hike (and throw my daughter up in the air), on the other hand we see it a lot in fat people, my mum, MIL and SIL all put on a lot of weight in lockdown and have lots of stretch marks, they were already big, we associate them with fat people but it's also common with growth spurts (I'm still the height of a 12yo) and muscle gain

It's a perfect example of seeing the same thing through different experiences. If your experience is that of a boy looking at girls, you're going to react differently than if you're a girl looking at someone vaguely like yourself.
The stretch marks alone would have been helpful for younger me to see.
A note for the boys: if you like sexually confident women who are willing to have fun with you, support women becoming confident in their real bodies. There's a direct correlation between women feeling ashamed of their bodies and men not getting sex.
13
u/3eyedsloth 27d ago edited 27d ago
Just to comment on how the stretch marks are indicative of pregnancy or obesity. As a man I first developed stretch marks on my inner-thighs when I was in 1st grade. I was not overweight at all; stretch marks can occur when the skin undergoes a period of growth. This does not mean just getting fat.. they could occur from a growth spurt, and from gaining a large amount of muscle, or even just regular growth the comes with getting older. Also the skin of certain people are just more prone to developing them.

Being overweight, being too skinny, being cleared skinned, being covered in acne, being beautiful in a “conventional” magazine cover sense or being beautiful because of your ability to be vulnerable to a wide array of people through an online platform. These are all ways that humanity expresses itself.

Yes im overweight and yes im working on it to change that.
36
u/more_bees_please 27d ago
That's not what this post is saying, but go off. It's more about the natural textures, markings, and lumps on the human body and how we all have flaws. We don't have to be airbrushed, filtered, "goddesses" like we see on instagram. If this was about obesity we'd probably see more views of her stomach, but the fact that it opens with a view of her leg with 'strawberry leg'. I've had strawberry leg since I was in middle school and my mother literally thought it was a rash and I was dying. We had to go through extra medical fees just to be told it's completely normal. We as a society don't embrace our flaws enough and it can lead to people literally not understanding their bodies or feeling comfortable in them. This video is about accepting them as human. Also she's not even obese? Chubby maybe.

u/Uncle-Benderman 26d ago
As a fat man this offends me, yeah, tour a real person, but so is everyone else, haveing flaws doesn't make you any more or less real than everyone else, this is a horrible mindset.
Also, being fat can have serious effects on your health, while being an ass to someone for being overweight is horrible you shouldn't try to normalize it, or act like it's a better way to be. Its unhealthy. I have personally experience with what those side effects feel like, I used to be 80 pounds overweight, I'm still overweight now, by 30 pounds, but I feel a MILLION times better now than I did then. Your health is important take care of you body, dont judge people on how they look, but dont promote unhealthy lifestyles as a good thing either. Let people be who they want to be, that's their problem. Dont just become exactly like the people being horrible to you
There is also such a thing as to skinny. Dont go that way either.

I ike how the girl showed real unphotoshopped skin. This is not super easy and I apprecieate it. In my opinion we should see more normal, inperfect human bodies in our feed 💪🏻😊

Stretch marks and acne are perfectly normal and healthy. They are the main point of her video here. They're often not acknowledged by society or blatantly airbrushed out and seen as undesirable. In reality, some people just have stretch marks because of puberty or working out. Acne just happens because of hormones or sometimes even bad reactions to makeup. Being proud of our natural flaws is frankly a brave thing in a society that actively demonizes them.

u/adrenalinjunkie89 27d ago

This post isn't about being fat. It's about embracing the flaws in your skin like acne and stretch marks. Society often shames us for having stuff like this and goes to the point of selling snake oil to try and fix it (especially with stretch marks). If it was about her being fat we'd probably see more shots of her stomach, and it probably wouldn't open up on her visible 'strawberry leg'
6
u/pat_a-rat 27d ago
exactly. a lot of people missed this point !! it’s not about “glorifying unhealthy bodies.” it’s about normalizing and showing that not all bodies are skinny and flawless (like what society tells us we should have).
-3
u/TheShrekster_69 27d ago
It's not only about being fat. But it's one of the things shown. I don't mind the rest, since no one can change those but embracing being overweight and calling it "real" just feels like they want to justify their actions and feel better about themself not taking care of their body.
9

While it's good to be confident in your own body, I've never liked the "this is what a real human looks like" narrative.
Like I'm fat and hairy and have stretch marks, but I don't think skinny, fit, hairless, or smooth-skinned people aren't real humans. This doesn't give me good vibes, it gives me condescending vibes.
Edit: to be clear as day, I'm not taking a shot at this person for her appearance. Just her wording. I am happy that she wants to promote body positivity, but I'm not happy that it seems to be at the expense of others.
