According to a Nat Geo article there were people who were going to raise the duck if they could catch it but one day the little duck took off to a nearby pond and started doing du ck things. So looks like momma owl raised a duck till he could duck on his own and he took off.

I’m wondering how this worked. What do ducks eat? Owls eat mice & voles & such. If mama owl was feeding baby duck mice, was it ok?

Poultry birds eat just about anything.

Probably why the lil guy ducked out so fast. Any longer and things could have gone fowl.

A redundancy on my part. Birds that humans have domesticated for their meat, eggs or feathers fall under "poultry", such as chickens, ducks, turkeys etc.

Yes according to Nat Geo it is true and isn't unheard of to happen but isn't as documented.

So wildlife enthusiast here. This is likely a wood duck chick. Momma wood ducks nest in trees cavities and for one reason or another, this egg got left behind. Or now that I think about it, what could have happened is mama took over owl's nest and started laying eggs only to be interrupted by owl and so she flew off. Owl is like oh look mah egg and hatches it. Typically, 24 hours after hatching, mama wood duck flies down to the ground and shouts at her babies to jump down from the tree. I didn't read the article but wouldn't be surprised if the baby jumped down and then went looking for it's family. I used to raise baby ducks at a wildlife center and they just don't do well on their own and usually don't survive without having friends. We even used to pair them up with other babies like bunnies and geese. Even when mama has a whole gang, they get picked off. My gut tells me baby duck didn't make it too long but because this is MadeMeSmile I will say that it definitely made it and it's now adopting baby owls and teaching them how to eat algae.
Edit: Just looked at article. Didn't realize Wood Ducks are parasitic nesters! Very neat.
