Did she say “trunk” or “truck?” Either way, she is awesome!

2.0k

u/Fronterra22 Jun 20 '22

She's country enough that she probably meant truck. She's too peaceful of a person to go through with a kidnapping.

946

u/IntermediateJackAss Jun 20 '22 edited Jun 20 '22 Silver

Dolly is probably the one person that can kidnap someone and I'd be okay with it. I'd for sure give her the benefit of the doubt. I know she has her reasons

226

u/Bogsworth Jun 20 '22

"Oh God, help! I've been kidnapped. Please don't kill me. I just want to go hom- wait, Dolly Parton? Oh god, thank you for letting me get kidnapped!"

151

u/I_Am_Anjelen Jun 20 '22

I mean, if Dolly Parton kidnaps you it's probably for a nice dinner, a dance between friends and maybe a glass of wine. You'd be able to ransom yourself out with a hug.

Or maybe that's just my wishful thinking.

76

u/CapnHanSolo Jun 20 '22

Considering Dolly it probably would be for a philanthropic reason. I know I'm gonna be a good hostage

41

u/Bug647959 Jun 20 '22

I feel that this would somehow be a good movie.

138

u/I_Am_Anjelen Jun 20 '22 edited Jun 20 '22 Gold

May I propose the title "The Dolly Pardon" ?

Edit : Thanks for the gold, kind Redditor!

18

u/Bug647959 Jun 20 '22

Ohhh, that's good.

20

Someone downvoted you right after I upvoted you, and I have just one question for them. Who hurt you?

19

u/IONTOP Jun 20 '22 edited Jun 20 '22

Who hurt you?

Jolene, probably...

It was probably Dolly that downvoted them, because she doesn't kidnap for the attention.

Edit: I meant to say "I've heard" that she doesn't kidnap for the attention...

And yes I'm posting this so that Dolly Parton will want to kidnap me again... That was the greatest experience of my life.. (None of the above statements have been proven in a court of law, pursuant to Chattanooga Laws, I'm required to say this by the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee State law and the NDA I signed on a roller coaster at Dollywood when I was 9 years old)

Dollywood was awesome though... (I'm not required to say this by law)

"I saw you square dance, and we can't have that happening. I'm taking you to get lessons"

That's how I imagine Dolly Parton getting away with kidnapping a child from their first "Dance" in middle school.

I'd be like "Oh, that's so sweet, she's trying to help this kid by kidnapping him and taking him to get lessons on how to dance with a person before they hit puberty and they actually need that skill, what a fucking gem of a person she is."

3

u/dancegoddess1971 Jun 20 '22

You can go home as soon as your family raises $1000 for the ASPCA. So, about a week? How do you feel about Thai food?

I mean, even she must get tired of barbecue.

She feeds them, buys them a house and pays for your college education while you get the help that you need. Its her way of solving the homeless crisis.

u/LiveShowOneNightOnly Jun 20 '22

I remember this full quote from her: "If it sags, bags, or drags, then I get it sucked, tucked, or plucked. It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." Rare and valuable honesty in my opinion.

122

u/cagedbambi Jun 20 '22

Dude this woman Clark Kent's her way through life that's not even her real hairdo and she wears glasses I've heard

63

u/is-Sanic Jun 20 '22

Think she talked about that. Her and her husband basically go incognito when outside because nobody knows who he is and what she really looks like beneath the makeup, cheap clothes and hair so they sorta just disappear amongst the masses.

12

u/Illustrious_Warthog Jun 20 '22

And not even her manager has seen her without her makeup.

9

u/lkmama Jun 20 '22

There’s one photo that I’ve seen on the internet that is supposed to be her without the wig/makeup. It both looks like a completely different person and also looks like Dolly (nose, eyes, teeth look like hers). If that is her, it’s a great incognito look. I would walk right past her and never know.

While she does have a wonderful talent, to me, what makes her great is her personality and that is something anyone can achieve if they work at it.

5

u/pr1m3r3dd1tor Jun 20 '22

Absolutely. If we are honest there are a lot of people in the world with more talent but none hold a candle to Dolly as a person and that is why she is beloved in a way that far surpasses any other.

4

u/Dumbkitty2 Jun 20 '22

More talent? She’s a song writing machine, she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You the same day. 9 to 5 was written in an hour and the typewriter clacking in the intro? That’s actually the sound of her fingernails rubbing together taken from the demo track. It was so perfect they didn’t try to source a proper recording.

I’m doing my best to be her at night as a 30yr old gay man. Come 8pm, I forget I have a beard and a truck, put my hair up and slip into something comfortable and break out the dessert.

As I’m typing this, there’s an Apple blossom baking and the Tillamook Black Cherry ice cream is thawing as a thunderstorm rolls through, ..before I wait for the sound of a Cummins diesel parking down the street.

Walter! Kaden! You naughty boy!”

Edit; punctuation is key, y’all.

Speaking of dessert, have you tried Dolly's new line (came out earlier this year) of cake mixes. Yes, you have to bake them but, the coconut isn't bad at all... add a scoop of ice cream to your slice (or cupcake) for true decadence. 😉

136

u/DucksOff Jun 20 '22

Yeah, some of the old press photos of her and some of the footage from the early television shows highlight just how insanely physically attractive she was. I’m not saying she’s ugly now, but let’s face it: she’s like eighty and a lot of that shit is not original equipment. OG Dolly was muy caliente.

She's riffing on an old line from the late, great Tallulah Bankhead, who had lots of great one-liners. She ran into an old lover she hadn't seen in years, and her first comment was "I thought I told you to wait in the car."

52

u/Nackles Jun 20 '22

God damn what an amazing retort

37

u/zrpeace19 Jun 20 '22

this woman is absurdly interesting. it’s actually nearly unreasonable.

edit: here is what i feel is a fairly representative quote that encapsulates her rebellious and independent personality

Bankhead's father had warned her to avoid alcohol and men when she got to New York; Bankhead later quipped "He didn't say anything about women and cocaine."

13

u/didyouwoof Jun 20 '22

That line is one of my favorites. And she made this comment ~100 years ago! She was right up there with Dorothy Parker, imho.

11

My first experience with Tallulah was the episode of the Lucy - Desi Comedy Hour. Her and Lucille Ball going at it is amazing.

Taylor Swift said the best advice she got for responding to hecklers was from Dolly - “I told you to wait in the truck”

48

u/ErinEvonna Jun 20 '22

Lol she should have used that on Kanye

46

u/NoCrossUnturned Jun 20 '22

Then Kanye would have gone on a tirade about white people driving trucks, so by telling him to wait in a truck she was acting like he’s her slave, then some rant about him being too much of a genius to be enslaved by the modern day slavemaster Taylor Swift.

31

u/TrepanationBy45 Jun 20 '22

It implies that she already knows the person who yelled out. Possibly a family member or a close friend/lover. And she didn’t expect them to be inside in the audience because she asked them to stay outside and wait in the vehicle for her to finish her performance.

It may be difficult for a non-native speaker to understand the nuance. For example, a woman may want to quickly run into the grocery store and would ask her children/husband/lover to “wait in the car.” She might then become exasperated if they went in anyway because they disobeyed the request and are interrupting the one task she wanted to complete without an interruption. She has a job to do and didn’t want a personal relation to interrupt the task.

It is unlikely she said “trunk.” That would imply that she had put the person in the trunk (vehicle storage space, “boot”) like one might do if they had kidnapped someone. That interpretation is darker (more sinister) and would be uncharacteristic of Dolly’s public persona. Some more adult-oriented comedians might use the word “trunk,” as it would imply that they were holding someone against their will, but their captive had escaped and had entered the audience and called out to her by professing their love even though she had locked them into the trunk of the car.

Edit: It is an interesting mental exercise to try to explain a joke to someone who may not be a native English speaker or someone who may be on the autism spectrum and doesn’t “get it” intuitively. Thanks for asking. I enjoyed trying to explain the joke as it really made me think about the nuances of language and the complexity of humor that may be obvious to some, but difficult for others to understand.

Edit 2: I am a native English speaker, but I go fishing with a group of Vietnamese guys who are friends. They often banter back and forth in Vietnamese, and will sometimes break out into heavy laughter. I am very comfortable with them and no longer have any fear that they are laughing at or about me.

Occasionally, I will ask what the joke meant or a more bilingual member of the group will spontaneously offer to explain. Vietnamese relies heavily on inflection, and I have learned that some of their jokes are inflection “puns” or have double meanings that are only understandable to someone who is well-versed in the language and culture. In any case, it is enlightening to realize that while we share the human experience, cross-cultural humor is very nuanced and sometimes difficult to explain.

You are truly a kindred soul for explaining without any snark, I've been in the position where I had to ask what the joke meant (I'm on the autism spectrum) people who explained it in a kind and caring way always made the day so much better. Sorry for the awful formatting and punctuation it's super late for me but you deserve the applaud

Dolly 'stole' that joke from Larry the cable guy, same thing happened at a taped show like 10+ years ago.. a woman yells 'I love you' and he says the exact same thing except 'trunk' is truck.

This may be a common southern phrasing like.. 'bless their heart'
