My daughter named our cats ice cream whiskers and Oreo pancakes and the vet chuckles every time, and insists on calling them by their full names.

Vet professional here: we live for the dumb names.

Edit: thank you to every single person who has replied with their dumb pet names, you've made my day. These are all amazing.

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

My son’s shortlist for our potential new cat includes Lampshade and Bootloop.

585

u/theSuburbanAstronaut Jul 06 '22

Impossible to choose, now you have to get 2 cats

303

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

I was leaning that way anyways.

307

u/pissclamato Jul 06 '22

Always get two. They're twice as much fun and almost no additional work.

Note: This advice applies to cats and Guinea Pigs, not to dogs or human children.

74

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

We had two, an older male and our younger little calico. But he died of old age at 18 and now Lucy is lonely and needs a snuggle buddy. I think two might be good if they’re friendly to other cats, so one isn’t alone when Lucy goes. She’s already 14 now but still perfectly healthy and mobile and loots like a permanent-kitten. She’ll still be around for a while, but not forever.

We want to get two bonded cats that are a bit older so we know their temperament already, and because it’s harder to find them homes.

27

u/iamthemovie1992 Jul 06 '22

I’m sad my cat just hates other cats. I tried to bring one into our home, and he was not having it. He’s like the friendliest, most affectionate cat ever to the point where I’d never hear him his once in 4 years. He was hissing and lunging toward her something bad

22

u/AgentFoo Jul 06 '22

You have to introduce them slowly most of the time, particularly if they're used to being alone. There's a whole process starting with them in separate rooms and switching out bedding so they get used to the smell.

5

u/Simpelveld Jul 06 '22

We need a amount of cats / amount of work chart!

4

u/Filz86 Jul 06 '22

I think it applies for dogs as well. You have to go for walks anyways, prepare food, go to the vet,... I even go as far as to say that two dogs are less 'work' because they interact with each other and don't solely rely on you for entertainment.

8

u/EleanorStroustrup Jul 06 '22

Twice the cost for care, and additional risk of expensive medical bills.

1

u/ChefArtorias Jul 06 '22

You should never own a singular guinea pig.

5

u/oddfellowfloyd Jul 06 '22

Or, use Lampshade Bootloop as first, and middle names? 😂

6

u/Myglobie1 Jul 06 '22

I think I like bootloop lampshade better than lampshade bootloop.

30

u/SuperMalarioBros Jul 06 '22

I love lamp

31

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

Maybe I should add “Brick” to the list.

16

u/dylovell Jul 06 '22

My brother named our fish napkin.

6

u/radioactiveblob Jul 06 '22

When me and my brother were little our first fish were racoon and cheese

1

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

Omg I love that.

3

2

u/copperfaith Jul 06 '22

My other half has decided that our future cat will be called Hallways

My nephews two cats names are Hotdog and Booty Meat. He's 23.

I'm leaning towards bootloop.

A friend of mine used to come up with some incredibly whacky names for their dogs and cats

Stedoff - a Labrador which was named “Instead of a Rottweiler” Coathook - a cat that was found in the cupboard hanging onto a coat hook after trying to spring up on it

The best one was a little Jack Russel. She said she would name it whatever her husband said when he first saw him. Therefore he was christened “Ohno not another one”. Or Ohno for short

4

u/sixthandelm Jul 07 '22

Oh No Jack Russels are INSANE. They have a shorter life span than similar sized dogs, not because of health issues, but because they always do crazy stuff and not always surviving. My friend’s Jack Russel stepped on the window control and rolled it down halfway before she could stop him, then jumped out of the car on the highway. He lived, but he had to have surgery and had major road rash. She has no idea why he did it… they were driving past a field with nothing in it and no other cars or animals around.

30

u/JMSTEI Jul 06 '22

Worked at a vet for a bit. My all time favorite was a cat named Fluoride Toothpaste.

76

u/A_Wet_Lettuce Jul 06 '22

My dog’s full name is “merry Christmas, don’t ask for anything else”. Riley for short

22

u/DistChicken Jul 06 '22

I called my cat "Lady Noodle the Battlecat"

It's beautiful especially since she is the most timid cat ever

20

u/halfdoublepurl Jul 06 '22

My vet loved when I scheduled for my Italian Greyhound mix. His name was officially Ugly Puppy. I had him registered as a mutt so he could do coursing at AKC events with that name, and his microchip was registered under it as well.

We called him Yoopie at home, but I made appointments for Ugly Puppy.

13

u/oddfellowfloyd Jul 06 '22

Our old man: Stimpy Snaggletooth Terwilliger III…or just affectionately, Stimpy. 😆

There was also Threeve Knuckles McAssinface I, Ph.D, Esq.. 😂 (practicing nap therapist on the Rainbow Bridge 🌈🥺🤟🏼😌 Always miss you, buddy…)

12

u/Xirithas Jul 06 '22

I have a Fredward, vet refused to call her Fred.

32

u/jdrobertso Jul 06 '22

I named my cat Coopernicus but I call him Cooper I just wanted him to have a goofy name. They love his goofy name at the vet and refuse to use the short version.

28

u/omnithorpe Jul 06 '22

I have always hoped so.
Dr Boomer Snortnlick and Tobias Phalanges Legume (Both Persians) seem to love being called their full names and zi have hoped the vets also got a kick out of them.

9

u/nibbyzor Jul 06 '22

When we were kids, we got some goldfish that me and my brother got to name. Mine was called Dolphin and his goldfish was Hole.

7

u/BoisterousLaugh Jul 06 '22

My favorite was always "2010 Honda Accord" she was such a sweet old kitty.

3

u/hyperfat Jul 06 '22

My sister's new pupper is Dr Watson. He's very dapper.

5

u/She_Persists Jul 06 '22

Pretty sure my next cat will be named Chucklefuck but the vet will just have him listed as Chuck.

2

u/thandrend Jul 06 '22

If I called my dog by her full name I'm sure I'd be hung up on, so I just call her Kali.

But her full name is Big Dick Khalil Johnson Wilson.

She got her name from my nephew. It has somehow stuck.

-25

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

[deleted]

60

u/Diredr Jul 06 '22

That's why I gave my dog a shortened name. That way when I need to call the vet or have company over, I can just say that. And when it's just the two of us I give her the longest, silliest names possible.

22

u/7laserbears Jul 06 '22

Lol my daughter named the bunny Yoyo Spaghetti

13

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

My cat’s first name was Chuki (pronounced Chewky) and his middle name was Chickenhead. So I always got out if the embarrassing thing too when calling the vet, but we all knew he was a chicken head.

17

u/soulbend Jul 06 '22

I'd get giggles every time from the vet for naming my female kitty Battlecat (Batty for short). I shamelessly stole the name from Reddit

3

u/AnOtterChick Jul 06 '22

Which got it from He-Man

1

u/soulbend Jul 06 '22

Sure did, haha

1

u/ConorT97 Jul 06 '22

All I can think of with that name is the movie Ferngully

10

u/Ellemeno Jul 06 '22

I had never heard of Oreo pancakes before and now I wanna try them.

My cat was given the name Toothless (he looks like Toothless the dragon) his middle names are Apollo and Gloom, and for some reason people always seem to think he doesn't have any teeth..

7

u/Sabriel_Love Jul 06 '22

My family insists on naming our pets after disney characters. The most obvious is a black cat named Gaston. There is a vet that ALWAYS sings the Gaston song every time we come in (some not obvious pet names: Willow: grandma willow tree. Copper: fox and the hound. Riley: inside out. Etc)

4

u/carlthebrute Jul 06 '22

Our first dog was Mr. Fluffleupagus… we called him Fluffy.

2

u/NyanBecca Jul 06 '22

My cousin had a dog she named Pinky Wednesday, to this day it’s my favorite pet name

586

u/Mysterious-Music-772 Jul 06 '22

What came first human jeff or cat jeff

50

u/Usemebrainless Jul 06 '22

Need to know!!

15

u/Smarie52013 Jul 06 '22

That's a very personal question.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

In my head I changed the meaning from "Other Jared" to "Original Jared" so now it's a compliment.

717

u/Usemebrainless Jul 06 '22

My boyfriend invited me over to meet his moms. I didn't know that one of their dogs had the same name as me. The most mischievous chihuahua apparently did something wrong, and I heard one of his moms angrily yell my name without context, I was so shocked 😭

424

u/olive_dix Jul 06 '22

Same! But with a very fat pug who apparently poops at random lol.

I was meeting my boyfriend's family for the first time and had to use the bathroom. When I was in there his niece started yelling, "Olive is pooping!!!!!" And the whole extended family let out shocked groans of disgust. I had a heart attack sitting on the toilet thinking...oh no, how did they know??? Lmao

115

u/Usemebrainless Jul 06 '22

😭😭 noooooo I'm so sorry

84

u/crappygodmother Jul 06 '22

Lmao I would be mortified

78

u/olive_dix Jul 06 '22

I was for a few second until someone said, "Take her outside! Don't step in it!!"

Such a relief realizing that did not apply to me lmao

31

u/pepehandsx Jul 06 '22

Imagine if they started banging on the door

35

u/Crankylosaurus Jul 06 '22

I’m cry laughing at the visual imagery of this hahaha

52

u/olive_dix Jul 06 '22

My bf told me Olive the pug was standing at her food bowl, eating and pooping at the same time 🤣

27

u/darkesth0ur Jul 06 '22

You pooped in their bathroom the very first meeting?!

49

u/olive_dix Jul 06 '22

Yes, we were 6 hours away from home and staying the entire weekend. What was I supposed to do?? Lol

81

u/lousyredditusername Jul 06 '22

Funny similar story. I have a pretty unique name. I was walking down the sidewalk as a kid when a lady sternly yelled "NAME! COME HERE!" right as I walked past her house. Turns out her new puppy had the same name as me.

I've only ever met 3 others with my name. ...and 2 of them have been dogs.

2

u/Usemebrainless Jul 07 '22

LMAOO THAT REMINDS ME When I was a kid, my neighbors named their golden retriever puppy "Coochie". I didn't understand, I was like 8. I remember we took the puppy for a walk in the neighborhood with our friends. Puppy got loose. Ran by the park yelling "COOCHIE"

32

u/skystan Jul 06 '22

🤣🤣🤣🤣

4

u/fuck-cumiseverywhere Jul 06 '22

my partners parents trained their dog in some shitty google translate german (so no one else can command the dog), my name is one of the commands so i always get confused when they’re yelling my name

196

u/pigeyejackson66 Jul 06 '22

Im a big guy that takes Miss Ameowica to her appointments. Its fine, I named her.

21

u/crack_n_tea Jul 06 '22

Would Miss Ameowica happen to be a doggie 🌿

30

u/pigeyejackson66 Jul 06 '22

No she's a cat that needs portion control. Her brother Milkface, too.

u/Cautious-Damage7575 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

My friend's cat is named Mini Me. We call my friend Dr. Evil.

100

u/Piratarojo Jul 06 '22

Oh a similar note, my male cat's name is Dr. Evil. Every time I call the vet for anything the other person always giggles, never fails.

114

u/opfart Jul 06 '22

My dads name is Jeff and his dogs name is Steve. They’re a perfect pair.

106

u/SakuRedux Jul 06 '22

My old dog was called Huni (pronounced like Honey. My mums decision on the spelling) and my mum, for whatever reason, ended up giving her the name “Huni Bunny Bumble Bee”. In fairness, the dog loved it so I can’t complain. Those four words would get you the biggest Staffy-smile you ever saw.

80

u/robertgunt Jul 06 '22

I'm RobertGunt, my old cat (female) was RobertGunt Jr. Then I'd also have to explain the 15 other names that I called her and what she was going by this week. Must be fun to work at a veterinary office with all of us pet weirdos dropping in.

43

u/sixthandelm Jul 06 '22

Yeah pet nicknames are weird. My cat Lucy has a million, but most of our friend group has “shortened” Lucy to “The Goose”

72

u/Cautious-Damage7575 Jul 06 '22

Jeff needs to own it.

71

u/Skulls13 Jul 06 '22

dog owners: their name is buddy

cat owners: their name is cool ranch dorito

62

u/YoureNotAGenius Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

Our dog's name is Marty McFly. He is registered as such. Once, he went missing and someone found him and turned him in to a vet who then called us.

"Hello?"

"Hello, this is soandso from Vet, is this Ms McFly?"

"Oh! This isn't but you've found my dog!!!"

179

u/Raviadso Jul 06 '22 Silver

I was once asked my cats name and I said, “Skibbleshanks” and the vet assistant corrected herself, “no, the cats last name” and I said, “oh Fluffybottom” and the vet laughed. “I was asking YOUR last name”

31

u/anitaajaynee Jul 06 '22

My vet has automated text message reminders, and it's very funny to see "Gavino mylastname is due for an appointment" like he's a proper little person 😄

115

u/MurkySkylines Jul 06 '22

I used to work for a dog training facility, and one of the best (worst?) owner pet combo names I've ever seen was

Steve and Steve Dog. And yes, I did ask Steve if his dogs name was correct in our system. Steve Dog was the actual name of Steve's dog. He was very proud of his... creative... name choice, too.

32

u/Thelostboyz87 Jul 06 '22

My neighbors have a dog named Steve that they call std for Steve the dog

2

u/MurkySkylines Jul 07 '22

Oh my God LMAOOO. If you're a New Yorker, maybe your neighbor is the same person.

"Yeah this is Steve the dog, but we just call him STD for short."

I can imagine this dog responding to the nickname, too. Terrifying.

2

u/Thelostboyz87 Jul 07 '22

Naw Seattle Washington but that’s exactly how they Introduced me to Steve. I’m glad others have had the same idea

1

u/MurkySkylines Jul 07 '22

Love the vast creativity pet owners have in their naming choices.

32

u/KatieCat86 Jul 06 '22

My parents cats name is Voldemort thanks to my little sister..

35

u/sendpuppypicsplease Jul 06 '22

When we were picking names for our dogs we went by “how embarrassing would it be to yell at the dog park” rule

6

u/Zeestars Jul 06 '22

Yep. We even physically yell it to see how it rolls off the tongue too. I often wonder what our neighbours think of us…

1

u/snortree Jul 06 '22

oh i love this so much.

19

u/Capital-Cheesecake67 Jul 06 '22

My husband likes to use goofy nicknames with our cats. I love to update the pet’s name to the nicknames. I loved it when the vet tech came out to ask for BooBear and my husband would stand up with the carrier.

16

u/FantasticWeasel Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

Last time I was waiting at the vets, the vet called for Georgina Henderson and a man who looked like the actor who played Hyacinth Bucket's husband but wearing a huge ginger toupee stood up and took his huge ginger guinea pig into the consulting room. I am convinced his toupee was made from Georgina's fur.

52

u/UnicornFarts1111 Jul 06 '22

My brother named his cat Sprinkles, Destroyer of Worlds.

15

u/XCrimsonMelodyx Jul 06 '22

I used to volunteer for a shelter, and we would let the fosters name the really little kittens. We had one litter that was Iron Man, Dolly and Shoes. Turns out they let the 5 year old name the kittens. They ended up keeping Shoes lol

13

u/Longjumping_Host_842 Jul 06 '22

I currently have a 15 yo pug who's full akc name is Pixie's Starlight Fairytail, every day name is Pixie Li. My mom delivered her. We had a Quincinera for her in April. We had people from 3 states come to celebrate. We got her a big poofy dress and I made her a pearl and crystal triple necklace.

My cats are ginger twins Leonard and Penny Hofstadter after my mom's favorite show, The Big Bang Theory. Penny was originally Sheldon, until we realized something was different, 🤣 They'll be 6 this month.

My calico is Dazzle Isabelle, she's named after the store she came from, a rescue the owner found under their car. I was offered anything in the store to take her. I took a carrier and some dog cookies. 14 years later the rest is history.

My tabby is MaryJane. I found her outside my old house. I found her in a pot, so I named her after my favorite plant 🪴 She's 9 and besties with the dog. The cat is fucking chonk and can crawl on top of the dog with no disturbance.

My kittens are just over a year old. Twin black females. We have Maleficent Rose after obviously my favorite Disney villain and Bellatrix Narcissa, the Lestrange sisters of Potterverse.

I've had crazy names for animals over my 39 years, but every name had a reason, and more nicknames than I can count. It's already been a full life. 🐶🐱💕

56

u/LuanaNapua Jul 06 '22

Our daughter named her dog Potato. Do you know how crazy I look when he runs off and I have to drive around the neighborhood screaming “Potato!” out the window?!? I swear we will not be getting another animal after this.

13

I was sat in the Vets once and the vet came out and asked for Dave. I thought he was calling the owner until a woman got up with her cat. I laughed unintentionally and the lady told me that the cat's brother was called Barry.

To which he then had to tell the receptionist, “It’s Johnny Depp…..” and sounded so ashamed of me.

5

u/inconsistentbagel Jul 06 '22

My brother and I’s first dog was named Booger Bear. My mom was too embarrassed to say his full name at the vet so he was just Bear. He was the sweetest booger anyone could ask for.
