Would I be able to use a backpack as a personal item and fit everything I’d need for a week in it?

I’m going to visit some family in Texas and as a broke college student my first choice is spirit. I was wondering if I could use my basic jansport backpack to fit all my clothes and accessories I’d need for the week or is it better to just pay extra to take a suitcase?
