Snowden is only in Russia because America cancelled his passport mid transit, leaving him stuck there. He was on his way somewhere else entirely.
Don't blame him for actions performed by the American government.1

I mean, of course. He’s dedicated his life to leaking classified government secrets. What the fuck did he expect would happen? What did any of you expect? He’s lucky to not be dead already. I’m not saying it’s right, but headlines like these ignore the massive legal shit that this dude will permanently be in for the rest of his existence.

During Ellsberg's time, establishment journalism rallied to his side. If not for that, Nixon would have absolutely given Ellsberg the same treatment Assange has received or worse.
What we're seeing now is only possible due to the moral vacuum occupying the space vacated by the 5th estate. What's ironic, they've distanced themselves from Assange in hopes of self-preservation, but ultimately their course is one of self-annihilation.

Yes. Nixon had his goons break into Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office, looking for kompromat. Their goal was to paint him as a mental defective Commie patsy, and then they could destroy him.
But back then, NY Times wasn't the cowardly servant of the military-industrial establishment.
Shit disturbers can always get got via covert actions. But today they can assassinate a man in full daylight.
