I thought lions couldn’t meow because they have some structure in their mouth that lets them roar but not meow?

Purr, big cats can roar but not purr, small cats purr but can’t roar. It’s a floating hyoid and specially developed larynx that allows them to roar. They can “meow” like other cats though many take to different forms of vocal communications

I think you’re thinking of purring. Large cats, excluding cheetahs, have a different structure of hyoid bone in their throat that prevents purring, but allows them to roar.

They aren't? What are they?

Lions, tigers, leopards, snow leopards, and jaguars are all members of the genus Panthera. We colloquially call this group Big Cats. Cheetahs, on the other hand, belong to a separate genus called Acinonyx.

So mid-sized cats?

No it's literally scientific grouping. Big cats, by definition, can roar and can't purr.
Cheetahs are classified in their own group, by themselves, cause they are unique in that they are they only cat that can't retract their claws.
