234

I always enjoyed the movie but after my dad passed away a few years ago that line kills me now, every.damn.time.

331

u/MightyCaseyStruckOut Boston Red Sox 17d ago

My dad and I would watch the Field of Dreams VHS the day before Opening Day every year. He died in 2001, so the day before Opening Day 2002 was fucking brutal for me. I don't cry much, but I took off work and was a blubbering mess all damned day.

I still watch Field of Dreams every year the day before Opening Day and have continued the tradition with my kids.

81

u/NerdLawyer55 St. Louis Cardinals 17d ago

That’s awesome, I might start doing the same but my kids are 4 and under so they may not appreciate it

136

u/MightyCaseyStruckOut Boston Red Sox 17d ago

My dad started plopping me down to watch it when I was 7. I didn't really grasp the importance of what we were doing until I was 9. Sometimes I remember that we only got to watch the movie 11 times together, then my own mortality starts to overwhelm me.

Sorry for getting into depressing territory, I'm mainly waxing nostalgic in my head.

31

u/tausdigger62 17d ago

I am sorry you are hurting baseball friend. Sounds like your dad was an awesome and it is cool that he lives on in you. Represent him proudly.

I thought Kevin Costner slowly walking around the field went on for too long, but watching the players come out of the cornfield in their old school unis gave me legit butterflies.

239

u/KD9dash3point7 17d ago

Yeah that had me wondering if someone somewhere messed up and didn't signal the next thing that was supposed to happen. It looked a dementia patient got lost and wandered onto the field.

87

u/eolson3 Washington Nationals 17d ago

You can hear an audio queue and Costner look over to the field the first time. The players aren't there, so he has to improvise a bit, shuffle around, and then look over again.

I really hope they have different teams every year. They really could do to same format as this with the twins, both Chicago teams, Milwaukee, KC, Cardinals, etc.

61

u/Demetrios1453 Cincinnati Reds 17d ago

You'd have to come up with old-timey uniforms for the expansion teams for it to fully work. The uniforms are huge part of the nostalgia and illusion. Some, like the Padres, would probably work ok, but seeing, say, a current Marlins or Dbacks uniform would just be jarring...

(It would be cool to see your guys would wearing Senators uniforms in that scenario)

21

u/jcwitte Minnesota Twins 17d ago

Considering they now hang the Senators' pennant/WS flags at Target Field, that's very possible that that would happen. It would still feel weird though. For the longest time, the Twins refused to acknowledge the Senators-side of the franchise.

I see what you’re saying. I recently watched the movie with my girlfriend who has never seen it, and it is explained that he and his wife were big activists in the 70’s, and implied they were basically pot smoking hippies. They also had the same exact dream, so she felt what he was feeling. It doesn’t seem that surprising to me she was immediately on board.

Also, I think she was able to see the players right around the time that the bankruptcy concern was thrown in.

Bit of YSK about the game and setting....

Delayed from last year...Covid

Not played on "the" Field of Dreams, this is what was to be a temporary field, holding something like 8000 built just adjacent to the field, but the plan is to keep it up, a game confirmed for next year, and they are looking at other uses.

Not only the players came "out of the corn", all 8000 fans used that entrance as well as they showed up for the game.

Ngl, at first it looked like Kevin Costner lost his keys in a cornfield outfield, but then the players came out and things got pretty cool.

haha, it was definitely half old man confusion and half actor drama.

Great direction. Not having any announcers talking over the entrance just letting the moment happen. Of course then Joe Buck comes in but what can you do

That gave me chills. The only thing that could have topped it is if Ray Liotta was the first one to come walking out of the corn.

I'm rather annoyed that MLB tv still has this blacked out. I understand that I'm within the White Sox viewing area, and this is a national broadcast, but damn. You would think for a special event MLB would want it to be available to as many people as possible, especially the type that subscribe to MLB tv. We are the target audience damnit.

End rant.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

u/reiks12 Chicago White Sox 17d ago

This would be THE best game for a streaker to get out there. Run around butt naked in the outfield and then disappear into the corn field. Would never be topped imo.

I lost my father a few days for Christmas. I don’t know whether it was getting my kids through the holidays as normally as possible, or my own walls, but I never cried.

A month or so ago I went to Cooperstown and they play a short movie movie about baseball and the end of Field of Dreams plays and I felt myself get a little filled up.

A few days ago I sat down and watched the movie in it’s entirety for the first time in years, and let me tell you… from the moment he says, “What are you grinning at, you ghost?”, I was a mess. It was the first time my children ever saw me cry. This movie has gone from an amazing film I loved as a piece of art to something that feels deeply personal to me on a new level. I don’t care how “corny” this whole thing was. It was so awesome and touching to a whole group of people who I’m sure feel the same I do.

This game is so rad. Also - these White Sox uniforms would be the sickest in all of baseball if they wore them regularly

As an Iowa native, this is a literal dream come true: Major League Baseball in my back yard.

Iowa, like MLB, can be beautiful or absolutely hideous, has moments of lethargy and can be boring, but yet is something I can't imagine not loving, warts and all. To have MLB here, even if it's just for one night a year, makes me happier than is rational.
