I’m so glad they hammed it up. I want this to be the yearly special event.

Except with less “I can make your hands clap”

I ran the soundboard for a minor league club one summer and let me tell you, you haven’t felt true power until you make thousands of people clap their hands with the click of a button. It ALWAYS works.

Sounds like a great experience.

The first club I worked for we had a rule that we only played “Everybody clap your hands” once per game. It was a good rule.

Yeah. I do wish they had stuck with just organ music.

8 combined HR's, each team's star players showing out, and a walkoff homer. This couldn't have been a better showcase for making this a yearly event.

I dont get how you do it without the White Sox but sounds like thats the plan

57

u/TheThoroughCrocodile 17d ago

It probably makes more sense to pick new teams every year but I could sorta see this being like a cool CWS tradition like the Lions and Cowboys always having Thanksgiving games.

8

u/StormTheTrooper California Angels 16d ago

Yes, this would be the ideal outcome. Something in line with what the NFL do with Thanksgiving, but they could try playing the White Sox against the teams of that 1919 season run. Against the Reds next year, the Tigers on the other.

I can understand the need of a team that attracts ratings, but making this a legacy game would be so cool.

They should finish the series there too if they do it again, I think that would be cool getting a 3 game set out of it.

This should of been the plan from the start, then more fans could’ve gone.

I normally have a tough time really getting into games that don't have my team in it, in any sport (though baseball with non-teams is a perfect background to summer).

But what a completely, thoroughly enjoyable game. All the specials, all the fanfare, and the intimate atmosphere. And to top it all off, a great game to watch, crowned with a walkoff home run. It really is what dreams are made of.

Can't wait to see this game in future years, and of course I can't wait for our turn to play!

60

u/slagnanz Washington Nationals 17d ago

And as much as I'm normally not a fan of the whole fox / national media production style, I was enamored the whole game. The interviews, the scorebug, the scenes from the movie. Ugggg

87

u/Spartan_029 Atlanta Braves 17d ago

the lack of permanent strike zone defiling our TV screens

27

u/ryguy32789 Chicago White Sox 17d ago

Being from Iowa should not have been the primary factor in choosing the home plate ump for this one

20

u/slayerje1 Chicago White Sox 17d ago

I don't know if I prefer it off of the screen. That was a trip trying to make out the zone while the ump had his own inconsistent one. I kinda liked guessing each pitch. The pitches are going to be called the way they are regardless if I see the zone or not.

This could not have been a better game in a literal dream location. What an incredible ninth inning that lived up to the game's magical status and somehow exceeded the hype going in.

I can only hope this starts a trend for baseball where teams play in locations across the country (1 game a year for each team would be awesome). Growing up, seeing a Royals game in Wichita would have been an unforgettable moment in my childhood (I grew up in rural, south central Kansas and it was tough to make it to KC). The Royals regularly playing in Fayetteville and Omaha as well makes too much sense. The Royals recent game in Omaha to honor their AAA team and the college World Series in 2019 didn't have this backdrop and hype but was awesome all the same.

For the first time in recent memory, the MLB did everything right today and I'm going to savor this one for a while.

118

u/RabbertKlien Seattle Mariners 17d ago

Pretty sure I heard on Talkin' Baseball that it's going to be a yearly event.

80

u/Bodmonriddlz 17d ago

Honestly it should be the white Sox game. Rotate the other team but always white Sox home team

126

u/Neat_On_The_Rocks Chicago White Sox 17d ago

I get that everyone wants a crack at it and there is money to be made from mixing multiple teams in each year.

But even from a marketing perspective, the long play is to make it the whitesox”s game.

If you rotate both teams around every single year, it WILL lose the magic, and rapidly. Obviously it will lose some magic regardless

But the key to longevity here is to really lean into making it feel like a tradition. The best way to do that is to make at least one of the teams a constant. Just ask rhe NFL with the cowboys and lions on thanksgiving.

If you make it a whitesox home game, it will have staying power.

Easy for me to say as a Sox fan of course e

76

u/FootballCraft San Francisco Giants 17d ago

They’re the main team in the film and it’s only a few hours drive outside of Chicago. Makes total sense to me.

38

u/bdobs San Diego Padres 17d ago

It would really be a really cool way for MLB to turn the Black Sox scandal into one of the premier sports events of the year, in a very roundabout way of course

12

u/ogminlo Pittsburgh Pirates 16d ago

I agree the White Sox should get to host this Iowa game annually, but I’d add that MLB should lean even harder on the 100 years ago feel and get the umps wearing bow ties, the pop music off the PA system, get the sponsors to submit old timey billboard designs for the field, and the visiting clubs need to have existed in 1919. These Johnny-come-lately outfits like the Angels or Astros can sit this one out!

Then add a whole MLB Barnstorming Series where clubs around the country host special games at out-of-the-way MiLB ballparks similar to how the NHL grew the one New Years outdoor game into several similar games each season. There are some really interesting MiLB yards that would make for a fun dog-days spectacle, even if there isn’t a movie tie-in.

Agreed. The White Sox should be the home team every year.

22

u/slayerje1 Chicago White Sox 17d ago

Also being located so close to Chicago(3.5 hour drive) for easy travel back to the city is another reason. Would like to see the Reds as an opponent since they were the opponent to the 1919 White Sox in the thrown World Series.

I don't think one game is enough. If a team builds a small facility (<10k) in a beautiful rural setting within an hour or two of their home park, they should aim for 10-15 games a year. Imagine the Giants playing in Napa wine country; the Brewers in the Wisconsin Dells; the Yankees in White Plains; or the Red Sox along the coast of Maine. Makes season tickets at the main field more accessible, you can sell alternate site events for 2-3x normal prices, and each remote game is a TV event.

Baseball is fundamentally a pastoral game and they'd be idiots not to capitalize off of the success of this Field of Dreams game.

177

Every second of this game was objectively good baseball even if Hendricks blowing the save made me damn near suicidal. This couldn't have gone better if it was scripted.

It had plenty of corn shots. A bit of small ball. Flashes of brilliant pitching. Even a bit of the ump show (for those who get off to that).

I honestly feel bad that a team had to lose what is objectively one of, if not the best baseball game in recent memory.

Absolutely. Highlights of this game will be played back 50 years from now. And my geriatric ass will be sitting in the nursing home telling my grand kids how I was watching this play out live.

I actually called Judge hitting a home run off Hendricks to make it a 1 run game in the 9th a few days ago

The actual ending was way better then I ever could have drew up however

Mlb stole all the water from California to keep everything green. That spot will be fine.

Genuinely made my night. I’m more content with whatever outcome happens in our game tonight. Unless we lose how the Yankees did….

10

u/CarrotGole45 New York Yankees 17d ago

Right. Like I can name losses that hurt more - this year alone the astros game, the red Sox game, the angels game… and don’t even mention our last few playoff runs lol. This team under this management is gonna keep doing this to us

Yes, sign me up for this annually please. Absolutely nailed it all around. I understand it might be more "magical" to have it once, but I feel like you have to take advantage of this every year. I guarantee tons of people fell in love with the game tonight

Aaron Boone has cost the Yankees 10 games minimum this year.

Worst manager in baseball. Loasigia is right there but Boone is a fucking idiot.

22

u/GoSox1992 Chicago White Sox 17d ago

Winning aside this was a fantastic game for the MLB. Hyping this game up and trying to draw in interest from other crowds and this could not have gone any better on national television. Just a great night for baseball

That was an incredible game. James Earl Jones bless Tim Anderson.

That really was a fantastic ending. Couldn't have been scripted any better.

Somewhere, a kid who is watching baseball for the first time, just fell in love with the game for life.

most importantly, DAAAAAAA JANKEES LOSE

u/john_the_fisherman Chicago White Sox 17d ago

After Tim's shot it looked like there was a kid waiting in the corn maze behind the stadium hunting for HR balls. How cool would it be to get that ball

Next year, I think the FoD game needs to be the only game in baseball at that time. All other regular season games should start before that so all fans can witness the magic.

6

u/fosherman Chicago White Sox 17d ago

The majority of this game was played without other games happening. Most games started before 3pm central, and after 8:30 central.

12

u/Daankeykang New York Mets 17d ago

That was some good stuff. Drama, theatrics, dingers, corn. I usually don't care about baseballs "attractiveness" as a sport but how can you get better than that?

93

u/chiwetel_steele New York Yankees 17d ago

as a baseball fan, that was one of the best games i've ever seen

as a yankees fan, i want to fucking die

edit: also this game proved that juiced balls are fun and we should go back to them

Tin foil hat time:

MLB juiced the balls for tonight so we could maximize corn balls.
