Build Upgrade Won a 7700x and x670 from Aorus - Upgrade Sanity Check

So yesterday I won a 7700x and X670 Elite AX from Aorus. Before yesterday, I had barely been paying attention to the new generation CPU's because I wasn't planning on upgrading for a while. Well now I'm playing catch up.

I plan on just dropping it in my current build. I know the 7700x will be overkill compared to my 2060 Super, but it is what it is.

Here's the list with me dropping in the new parts into my current build (plus getting DDR5).

I know I'll need to buy some DDR5 to pair with it, but I have a few other concerns:

  1. The mobo has a 8+8 CPU connection, but my current PSU only has 1 8 pin CPU connection. I understand that pre-AM5 it could work, but is that still the case with AM5? I don't plan on OC-ing.
  2. This is a silly question, the Dark Rock Pro 4 is rated for 250w TDP and the 7700x is only 105w, but with the higher load temps, is the DRP4 still good enough?
  3. Should I get different ram from what I selected in the list?
  4. Is there anything else I should consider?

If I need to replace the PSU as well, I'm considering just building from scratch and going with a 3080 or waiting for the 4080. Would love some suggestions on going that route.

Thanks!

Edit: pulled the trigger on a pair of 2x16 6000mt/s gskill sticks.

Discussion ASUS Z690-PLUS motherboard, can it support two GPUs?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC. I am a light gamer but I have a job that requires a lot of monitor real estate, so I have 6x 1080p 24" displays wall-mounted. My current build from 2016 has two 1080's and its worked fine for me, but its about time for an upgrade.

I'm thinking of grabbing a microcenter PowerSpec G470 build and noticed it has a Z690-PLUS motherboard which appears, from ASUS's product pictures, to have two of the large PCIe slots needed for GPUs. The second slot at the bottom I'm assuming would fit a GPU if the case allowed for it.

I am not an ultra-pro gamer looking for every last inch of performance -- I'm a middle-aged guy who has a need for lots of monitors. As such, I'm curious about 'can this work' not 'will this run the 2022 equivalent of crysis at 4k while rendering in DaVinci Resolve.'

If a MicroCenter PowerSpec G470 won't work with two GPUs, I'd love alternate suggestions that would, understanding that I've mostly grown out of building PCs entirely by hand and appreciate the 'grab and go' of MicroCenter which still affords some customizability after-market.

Thanks in advance for any feedback/help.

Discussion my friend's lower-res but also smaller monitor looks better than my higher-res but bigger monitor?

At home i have a 2K 32'' monitor. My friend has a 1920x1080 24'' monitor. For some reason, it seems to me that my friend's graphics look better than mine. (same games, same graphic settings). Is that normal? Am I stupid cuz I bought a big monitor that in the end looks worse than a smaller one? Is it just my stupid brain's impression?

Discussion picked up a used 3080 for 580 USD. did I do ok?

Coming from a 1080ti.

Edit: thanks for the insight guys. I just didn't want to get ripped off most importantly

Runs really well. Was fairly clean I'm pretty sure it was a miner card but I'm ok with that. Got the receipt and some warranty left.

Edit 2: it's an Asus TUF variant. Okish I guess

Only cheaper versions I could find were Lenovo, Dell, gigabyte aorus master, maybe a Zotac. Saw an EVGA xc3 but they were too far a drive

Edit 3: I had a second look at the receipt. It's from Newegg and the card was part of some combo with a 3900x and x570 Asus TUF board, some shite power supply. It couldve very well been a card in a regular build and not on some mining farm.

Build Help 16GB vs 32GB

I am building a new gaming rig, and I am wondering if I should go with 32GB or if 16GB is still enough. I will be running DDR4.

I am going to be getting an i7-12700k with an RTX3070TI running 1440p.

I don’t stream or do anything creative, just gaming. I play RTS, FPS, and RPG games.

Thanks!

Discussion Easy to play PC games for beginner grandma?

1.2k Upvotes

Hey, my grandma got gifted a PC recently and is keen to learn. I want to introduce her to some games that are easy to play but stimulating enough so she doesn't get bored and end up discouraged. Granted it takes her a while to find the mouse cursor and move it to it's destination.

Build Help upgrading HP Pavilion

I've got a HP Pavilion TP01-2000a and I want to put a RTX 2070ti in it. Problem is that it only has one 8pin cable from psu. Can I use the 6pin header for the sata power to power the 2070? I know HP motherboards don't like to be modified. So, is this possible?

Build Upgrade Would a 5600x make good use of a 3090?

Hey all, I have the opportunity to upgrade to a 3090 at a great price and was wondering if a 5600x would be fine at 1440p or if it's too mismatched and I should upgrade CPU as well or just get a 3080. Thanks!

Build Upgrade I think I should upgrade my cooler... (9700k NH-L9x65

I have a 9700k and I've been running a lower profile Noctua NH-L9x65 inside of a Corsair Carbide 100r (I know this case isnt the greatest with airflow on top of everything). I'm sure this cooler is ok for lower powered (i3, maybe i5) CPUs but I'm not sure if I made the right call with this cooler.

Is a NH-U9S a better call for this one? Seems like it is compatible with my case.

Troubleshooting bios recognize m2 after shutdown but not after restart

Hello guys. I've recently bought a pre-built rig, when it arrived I installed the gpu and booted up. Everything was perfect except windows 10 was the home edition, I had a usb with windows 10 that I've installed with rufus so I thought it's easier to just reinstall. I did that and again there was no problem. But I've realized I could see the partition that windows created on my m2, I've looked up online on how to hide it and I did it. I installed all the windows updates and moved on with my day.

Couple of days later I remembered that I forgot to turn resize bar on. I got into bios and enabled it, doing this also enabled above 4g coding and -if I remember correctly- csm. Booted up fine. I installed my gpu driver, and when I restarted pc went straight into bios, I pressed save and exit without changing anything but it went into bios again. I pushed reset button, same. I turned it off completely and on again, but this time it booted up fine. This is the point I've realized I could turn the pc off and on but if I reset it it was going into a bios loop. I've never really needed to restart until installing the gpu driver so I don't know at what point I screwed up.

Here's the stupid thing I did though, I thought I could just reinstall windows 10 again to fix it. I did a custom installation, formatted the m2 and started installing. I went to kitchen and when I came back I saw it was back in bios. I started it again and this time there was no drive to install windows at all, I've looked it up main solution to this was installing the motherboards storage driver. So I downloaded my models driver, put it in the windows 10 usb. I tried installing the driver but any of the folders wasn't showing up unless I unchecked "show only compatible drivers". I installed them one by one anyway, but it didn't solve the issue.

Now if I boot the pc into bios I can see the m2 with windows installed on it, if I reinstall windows at the end it says windows has to restart and it goes back into bios, and because it restarted I don't see the m2 anymore, only the usb.

I've tried turning csm on and off, switching between windows uefi and other os, resetting back to default bios settings. I don't know if I screwed something while trying to hide the partition, or if I need to fix it through bios. Any idea how to fix it?

Much thanks in advance.

Build Help Want tips on building a new AMD pc

Hello

My current pc is: Intel 4790k 4.8ghz overclocked. 980ti with a decent overclock. 32 gb 2400hz ddr ram and some nvme and ssds etc. got a 144hz 2k screen and the rest is decent.

I was wondering how much I would have to spend on an all AMD pc for a good upgrade from what I have and what I should go for.

Thank you? :)

Build Upgrade Older Processor Upgrade Recommendation

I'm running a PC I built about 5-6 years ago and looking for a CPU upgrade. Currently I'm using a 6th generation Intel i5-6400 in an Asus Z170-A motherboard. If I wanted to upgrade the processor, what's my best option for getting the most bang for my buck? If possible, i'd like to keep the price under $100-150

Going for an all-white build, need suggestions before commiting. Need suggestions especially for monitors.

Also is this an issue that can easily be resolved?

"Warning: The Asus ROG STRIX B550-A GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor with BIOS version 2423. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, upgrading the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU."

Troubleshooting Red DRAM LED for X670 Aorus Elite AX

Upvotes

I bought a Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX Board and tried to run it with a Dark Power 12 (1000w) PSU, a Ryzen 7900x and G.Skill Flare Expo DDR-6000 CL-36 RAM (2x16GB). All mentioned hardware is newly bought. The RAM is listed as compatible.

I assembled it together with an experienced friend. The DRAM LED was red when we started it for the first time (only motherboard, some fans which were spinning, CPU, RAM and PSU, assembled in a new case). While rebooting we took a closer look and we noticed that the CPU light does go red first, but aber a split second it turns off and at the same time the DRAM one starts shining. So we checked the power cables, inserted the RAM sticks in different slots in different combinations, same result all the time. I even got another pair of RAM (from Corsair); same red light. Corsair RAM has some LED lights which were on.

Interesting Note: when holding down the power button, the system doesn't shut down, the DRAM LED goes off and the CPU one goes on.

I tried to update to the latest BIOS version since the changelog has some notes about "memory compatibility". I downloaded it, extracted it on a USB stick which I formatted with Rufus, renamed the file to GIGABYTE.bin and inserted in into the motherboard, switched on the power, pressed the Q Flash Plus button. It blinked for 5 Minutes and 30 Seconds, then it stopped. I turned off the power, turned the power on again, started the PC: red DRAM light again.

I took out the motherboard, placed it on some cardboard, reinserted all the cables and hardware, removed all Fans etc, but red light for RAM again.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I'd suspect that the motherboard is broken. Does this conclusion make sense?

Thanks for your time!

Build Help Question about DDR5 Ram.

Upvotes

Are 8gb ddr5 sticks really not as good as the 16gb ones? I can only get either 2x8gb ram or 1x16gb DDR5 at the moment. They're quite expensive so will be going for the low end ones and maybe add more ram later.

Below are some of the options availble in my country:

  • Crucial 8GB DDR5 4800MHz Memory CT8G48C40U5 x 2 (Micron)

  • Crucial 16GB DDR5-4800MHz Memory CT16G48C40U5 x 1 (Micron)

  • Corsair Vengeance 5200MHz C40 Memory CMK16GX5M1B5200C40 x 1 (not sure)

  • ADATA XPG Lancer 16GB 5200MHz RGB Memory AX5U5200C3816G-CLARBK x 1 (Spectek)

Buildzoid does not recommend getting the 8gb sticks or using a single 16gb stick lol :(. How much of a difference would it actually make? Ill be using the pc for work, personal usage and casual gaming. My job requires me to work on 10-15+ heavy tabs for 9 hours straight everyday. I guess I should have gone with a ddr4 motherboard but now I cant return it.

Need some advice as Ill be picking up the ram tomorrow or day after to pair with i7 12700 + MSI Mag Mortar ddr5. I would like to overclock the ram a lil bit as well, guessing Spectek isnt too good at that.

Thanks in advance.

Build Help New to building, does this build look ok?

Upvotes

I'm planning on building a PC so that I can stream/game/vtube. I made some adjustments to build suggestions I received here and am looking for input. My main concern is streaming quality/lag and being able to have a number of programs going at the same time. I'm very green when it comes to this so any advise is welcomed. My budget from the other topic is still the same so I can upgrade items if needed.
