"Payout" feels like the wrong word — makes it seem like he was fired. This was essentially a bonus for strong performance over ten years in the role of CEO.
While these numbers are indeed staggering for any individual, it's actually good to see a CEO stay with his company for ten years, and not get a multi-million dollar bonus for only a few quarters of hyping up the stock price.

Also, if you look at the increase in value of the company during that period, it’s in the trillions - is it fair for the CEO (and others) to be well compensated through stock options through such a sustained period of growth equal to 0.05% of the increased value of the company? I’d say yes - there are CEOs out there with huge pay packages even when the value of the company is going DOWN, and then many of them get a golden parachute when the company fails. None of that is happening here.

Agree. The culture of short-term gain for executives is very toxic for our society. Luckily, it's on the wane and larger private equity firms like Blackstone have all but cut ties with any companies who incentivise short-term thinking like this.
Or, anyone looking at Apple's success should also look at longevity at the top vs. churn-and-burn with their CEOs. Maybe, just maybe, the two are related.

Many many people at Apple get stock options. A rising company valuation raises MANY boats.

It’s was a stock option, which he promptly sold. Sure people get stock options but again, did he really do enough at Apple to warrant $750m worth?

If you take the time to look at the company’s performance over the past 10 years, then I’d say yes.
